Blinking a few times, Ellie tried to discern whether or not Mara was being serious. The engineer still projected a shyly demure attitude at times, and the more unreserved side of her personality still managed to catch the younger girl off guard - not that she particularly minded. Propping herself up on one elbow, she practically purred, "Oh, baby doll..." Bringing her head down so that dark bangs slightly brushed against blonde locks, she gave Mara a kiss that lingered for a few, long heartbeats. "The things you say and do..."

The cheeks around her grin colouring at the wave of compliments, Ellie affected the exaggerated accent of a Southern belle. "Oh, you do go on!" As Mara settled back, the taller girl tucked her chin into the space between her girlfriend's shoulder and neck. "And may I just say," she added, her tone as warm as her breath against Mara's face, "you are gorgeous, clever, focused, enthusiastic and... inventive." She brushed a slow kiss across the other young woman's jawline, largely just because it was there.

The big man nodded to each of the younger heroes is turn as they introduced themselves, Wail seemed to take the extensive security measures in stride. "Seems like it's not news, but the moniker's Wail. Used to be one third of 1-800-JUSTICE, if that means anything to kids these days." a braod hand stroked his beard contemplatively. "Was retired for years, but... well. 'You know this town', hmn?" LaMarr made a rumbling bass sound that might have been a chuckle. "Which just leaves the sister in silver."
-
Laughing at the poke, Ellie swatted playfully at Mara's fingers before entwining them with her own. "I take it the quality is sufficient, then?" she asked, quirking an eyebrow slightly before taking a slightly defensive tone. "What? I'm allowed to be a little insecure sometimes, too, y'know." Even knowing that Mara was similarly inexperienced, the young woman had fostered certain quiet fears that she would prove fundamentally incompetent with regard to the skills involved. Those fears might have been proven pleasantly unfounded, but she wasn't above fishing for a few compliments.

"Don't have the prep time for complicated," Midnight prefaced grimly, placing one hand over his chin in concentration. "Sticking to basic guerrilla methods; difference is scale." The young man, having switched back to his customary black, indicated his friend. "Edge is the distraction. Can cover a staggering area with chaos. The rest get in and out with Singularity, cause as much lasting damage as we can along the way." He didn't get into his personal plan for dealing with the eventuality of the Blank making an appearance, but that was the basic outline.

Ellie squirmed pleasurably under Mara's hand, reflexively pulling her waist a little closer as she adjusted her position to get more comfortable with a happy murmur. "Special is right. Have I mentioned how happy I am you don't live up to the stolid supergenius stereotype?" She gave her girlfriend another light kiss, leaving her face close enough so that blue eyes stared into blue eyes. "Some people might call teleportation a little extreme for a booty call, but I like the sentiment."

Landing back on solid ground with a resounding thud, Wail followed the others in, nodding with approval as the mysterious woman they'd rescued tended to the telekinetic's wound. "Sounds like there's a tale worth telling there," he agreed with the other heroine, remaining standing nearby, "but first thing's first. Seems my rep proceeds me, but I've missed a couple issues of the 'who's who' for our line of work. Unless you'd rather I just keep calling you 'son'." He offered Push a minute smile.
-
Ellie did laugh, a throaty, melodic sound as she finished pulling the sheets up and ran her fingertips through Mara's hair. "You're a real martyr." For a little while she just enjoyed the soft warmth of her partner beside her before biting her lower lip for a moment and noting, "Not that, y'know, we have to wait until you have a headache. I mean, I think it was probably good that we waited a bit, but..." She laughed again, clearly in too good a mood to give into any lingering awkwardness. "Now I kinda feel like making up for lost time."

"No sweat," Ellie assured her with a dismissive wave. "You know how it is; if you can't carry a box without dropping it, they're never going to let you cut somebody open and monkey with their insides." The intern jogged off to track down a more conventional ultrasound machine. Parker -- Jessica, rather -- seemed likable enough, though it left the dark haired young woman pondering just what the proper etiquette was in this situation, given her secret identity. I guess that'll just be a little awkward when we're finally introduced properly.
-
Arching her back accommodatingly to facilitate the removal of her top, Ellie forewent a clever reply in favour of drawing Mara back down into a heavy kiss, letting her eyelids flutter closed. Some time later, she lay on her back, exhausted but with a broad grin she couldn't have suppressed even if she'd wanted to. With a stretch that started at her feet and moved all the way up to her fingers, the athletic young woman shifted to snuggle closer to her girlfriend, draping an arm over her as she adjusted the bedsheets with her free hand. "Mmh... You realize, of course," she murmured, "you're never going to be able to use 'I have a headache tonight' as an excuse now."

Ellie did her best to keep a flat look of disappointment off of her face. The miniaturized ultrasound devices would certainly be useful, but they weren't exactly in the league she'd come to expect from the Lab. Then again, Mara usually shows be the experimental, in-development stuff, which you really wouldn't want to be just handing out. Setting the box down, she did pull an annoyed look at the apparent lack of preparation on the hospital's part and nodded amiably to the presenter. "Sure, gimme a sec to track one down that's not in use. Ellie, by the way," she introduced herself, extending a hand.

Wail regarded his sudden levitation with surprising aplomb, although he did uncross his arms as though trying to keep his balance when Push telekinetically raised him further into the air. Lord, Yelena, I wish you were here now, he thought in a moment of melancholy, recalling his departed teleporting comrade. Out load, he called down to the youngsters in the car, "It's fine, just get going." He steadfastly refused to assume a traditional, horizontal flying position, but at least tilted his toes downward and refolded his arms, giving him a convincing if somewhat disconcerting appearance of levitation.

Even if Mara had wanted to pull further back, it would have proven difficult with Ellie wrapping her limbs around her and craning her neck to follow her lips upward as the inventor paused for air. Her blush had already evolved into a full on flush even before the coy suggestion, at which point it was largely obscured by a broad grin. The evening's emotional roller coaster had left her heart beating quickly and her nerves vibrating, symptoms that only grew more acute as her fingers wandered across the hemline of Mara's jeans to wrap around the bottom of the blonde girl's t-shirt and begin sliding it upward. "Well, since you already got all that other stuff off your chest anyway..." she teased breathlessly.

"It's... probably funnier if you don't actually deal with toxins and the like on a regular basis," Ellie allowed charitably, although she hadn't actually gotten the joke at all until Parker reiterated the video game connection. Probably funnier if you've never dealt with vampires, either, the volunteer mused inwardly. Does that make me a 'blue herb'? ...no, that just sounds derogatory. She suspected the other young woman's chatter was largely a sign of nervousness over the impending presentation, but she could see how the long-haired girl would get along with the typically laconic Mara. Not that she was even a tiny bit jealous, obviously, because that would be ridiculous. Taking a closer look at the sealed box she was carrying, she asked aloud, "So, are we talking nanobots or a sympathetic electrical field or what? I know you guys have more engineers on staff than biologists."
-
Whatever reaction Ellie had been expecting, that clearly wasn't it. Letting herself be dragged up on to the bed in her surprise, the coltish young woman opened her mouth to say something but found it abruptly covered by Mara's lips. After a startled moment, she melted into the kiss, her toes curling where they hung off the side of the bed. Enjoying the unusually aggressive move from her partner, particularly so soon after the moment of hesitant vulnerability, she wrapped her arms tightly around slighter girl's waist and crossed her ankles to embrace Mara's legs as well.

It took Ellie a little longer to catch onto Mara's meaning as she looked over the new set of articles, the light fading from her fist as she concentrated. "Build...? Oh!" She turned back around to face her girlfriend, her expression caught between sudden realization and concern. "Then that's why-- Oh, baby, none of that's your fault. You have to know that, right?" She moved swiftly back the bed, kneeling beside it and reaching for the young woman's hands. "Is that why you didn't want to say anything? Oh, corazoncito..." When Mara made her final, off-hand comment, Ellie practically yelped, "Your Dad?!" Aghast, it took a few beats for the engineer's small smile to reassure her. Finally she managed in a serious deadpan, "Okay, we're not alternating Christmas dinners between our families."

Frowning, Ellie shuffled off of the bed and hesitantly stepped closer to screen to get a better look at the information displayed there. It didn't take her long to read the files, nor to comprehend the full extent of what they were describing, thanks to her medical training. The young woman's expression turned perplexed and then aghast. "Why would you even... wait. No, that can't... That's insane!" She began rereading the reports, convinced she must have misunderstood something, her fingers clenching at her sides. One fist began to glow with virulent green light, darker spots in the aura spinning angrily about in a display that did not appear to be entirely voluntary. "I'll kill them. I'll track them down and... no, I'll take them apart one piece at a time and leave them like that, I'll..." She trailed off, shaking with directionless fury. "Oh, Dios, Mara."

Trevor made a short, flat noise that could have been interpreted as a chuckle. "Should pay attention to my own advice, hnn?" He placed his gloved hand atop Erin's as she brushed the side of his face, closing his eyes for a moment beneath his mask's lenses. "Love you," he said softly, though it sounded vaguely like he was answering a question he hadn't asked out loud. "Should keep moving," the young man noted, regaining his composer and professional manner.

Wail, raised an eyebrow from behind his sunglasses, but did as Push requested, walking with heavy footsteps over to the small vehicle. The broad shouldered man's size was all the more evident in comparison to the car, and he rubbed his grey-streaked beard with thick fingers. "Take it you've got a notion cooking, son?" he inquired, giving the injured youth a look that somehow mixed concern and frank appraisal. LaMarr could only assume Push was planning to use his superhuman abilities in some way, but wasn't keen to see the young man strain himself given his state.

"Hey, hey, Marbar, it's okay! Calm down!" Ellie assured the horrified girl. She wanted to close the distance between them again, but whatever Mara was so upset about, she obviously needed at least a modicum of space until it was sorted out. "We don't have to talk about it this second if you don't want, alright? I mean... I want to know, especially if it has to do with your health, but if you don't feel ready..." She did a good but not perfect job of keeping a faint note of hurt out of her voice. It wasn't that she didn't think Mara trusted her, after all, but not being able to help still stung.

Ellie Espadas usually volunteered at Trinity Hospital in the West End, if only because it needed the help more, but Freedom Medical Center certainly afforded the prospective medical student more opportunities to learn. It didn't hurt that it was so much closer to the Lab and a certain engineer, either, admittedly. Helping to carry boxes wasn't exactly what she'd signed on for, however, even if she was curious about what new equipment was being delivered. The young woman had expected to see Miss Americana when told that someone from the R&R facility was coming along to demonstrate the device, but was surprised to recognize Jessica Parker, better known by many as Ironclad. Ellie had heard a lot about her from Mara, and found her curiosity truly piqued, particularly since Parker obviously didn't know who she was out of costume. "So," she began, "they didn't really tell us what you guys were bringing over. Anything exciting?"
-
Pulling herself toward the head of the bead so that she was sitting atop her feet, Ellie placed her hands one either side of Mara's face, running her fingers back through the disheveled blonde hair. "What'd I say about that?" she admonished wryly with a small smile while her eyes traced the lines of the inventor's cheeks and lips. "Don't need to thank me or apologize; if you need me, I'm here. End of story." Her smile widened even as she bit her lower lip to contain it. "Besides, I think I could probably get used to waking up to this."

The amount of time it took Ellie to rouse herself as she felt Mara shift beside her suggested that she needed to take her own advice regarding sleeping habits, but eventually, arching her back in a stretch, the taller girl reopened her eyes and sat up, regarding her partner with a drowsy smile. "Hey. Feeling better?" Mara certainly looked better. Looks fantastic. Heh, bedhead. As the gears slowly started turning again in her mind, it occurred to Ellie's cheeks to colour a deep pink.

The singing faded to a soft humming and eventually silence as Ellie watched Mara's breathing become shallow and rhythmic. The young woman's expression turned contemplative and her touch grew lighter still. It was several minutes before she began, in a whisper much too quiet to disturb Mara's sleep, "So, listen..." With slow, careful smoothness, she slid her crossed legs out from under the engineer's head and beneath the sheets. "You may have noticed already, but I'm kinda in love with you." Making sure Mara's head rested comfortably on the pillows at the head of the bed, she slipped in beside the smaller girl, one faintly glowing hand running gently through blonde locks. "Just wanted to get that out in the open." Closing her own eyes, she snuggled in a little closer and fell into a shallow doze.

As Mara murmured tiredly, Ellie's eyebrows lifted. She'd known that her girlfriend's prodigious intellect was beyond the range for ordinary people, and that she possessed a few other distinctly metahuman abilities, but this was the first she'd heard about any artificial tampering. She opened her mouth to ask a half-formed question, but closed her lips and continued to massage Mara's forehead instead. The inventor didn't like talking about whatever abnormalities her brain possessed, she knew, and answers could wait until after a good night's sleep. Very faintly, she half-sung, half-whispered, "Nana, nanita, nana nanita, ea..."
