"Well, if you want to design a line of formal wear that spontaneously dissipates into loose molecules, I promise to be nothing but supportive," Ellie assured Mara with a deadpan that quickly gave way to a grin. "I'm just a terrific girlfriend like that." Keeping pace with the shorter girl's stride, she slipped their linked hand into the pocket of her coat for warmth. "What kind of company? Consulting? You could pretty much just choose whatever you wanted to do and clean up," she noted confidently.

Palming her cards one at a time as Fusion dealt them, Jill raised an eyebrow above her crimson bandana mask. "Y'know Legs, if it looks like a magic duck, swims like a magic duck, and quacks like a magic duck..." the teenage metamagi drawled, using her fingers to pin the backs of the cards to the table while she lifted the side closer to her with her thumb. She might have been a scientist at heart, but she'd seen enough world-class spell-slinging to accept that sometimes the immutable laws of the universe could be encouraged to look the other way. "Aw, I like Dead Head, he's a sweetheart. Y'know, in a rotting, putrid organs kinda way."

Suppressing a sudden feeling of unease as he returned from the trophy room, Trevor finished making a few arrangements on his smart phone before replacing it in his pocket. "Groundskeeping company will be by in the morning," he told Mark as his friend came down the stairs, "take care of the lawn." The unkepmt grass about the house would draw unwanted attention if it got any longer; there was no point in advertising that the residence was unoccupied.

It was still cold enough out that Ellie slipped into the black pea coat she's folded into her larger bag before leaving the warehouse, not that that stopped her from taking Mara's arm and pulling her closer against the supposed chill. "I don't suppose you've considered zippers?" she asked innocently, knocking her hip playfully into the engineer's side as they walked down the street. Twining her fingers into Mara's, she noted, "You know, I love that you have your own place, but the location is kinda skeevy."

"I was kinda wondering about that..." Ellie admitted with a sly look. Admittedly, she liked the confidence Mara showed when she rode the motorcycle, not to mention the excuse to slide up close behind the petite inventor, but she like the new black skirt, too, so it pretty much evened out. "A cab works," the medic agreed easily, "although we should probably get a bit away from the warehouse first, being a super secret headquarters in a sketchy part of town and all."

"Ha, well, plenty of time for that later," Ellie noted with a short laugh, pulling a nondescript handbag out of her satchel before setting it down on the kitchenette counter and extending her hand to Mara. "You're right, we do have reservations. Don't wait up, Puppy," she instructed the rolling mass of circuitry and motors. "Y'know, I think I heard about those auditions. Is it true Dr. de Havilland is... y'know. On the company softball team?"

"Uh, yeah, I'll have to try that sometime," Erik responded dryly, his expression making it clear that letting Archeville tamper with his brain was not particularly high on his list of fun activities. "Have you?" he countered the Doktor's question, matching a definitive block of the lashing blow to his words, stopping his opponent's sword cold. "If you wanted totally objective tactical analysis, you could have built a bunch of mindless robots," the fencer pointed out.
-
With another small laugh, Ellie took a sip of water as she nodded. "Oddly enough, I do know what you meant." Mara's unique cadence took a little getting used to, but there was something surprisingly appealing about someone who said exactly what they were thinking without carefully choosing their words or veiling their meaning. "So, y'know. Thanks," she added a little more quietly as she took another drink. "You're right about the holiday, too, but I am a lapsed Catholic. Mama tried to get us to start going to mass again right after I got my powers, but mi hermano and I ended up fighting off a weird monster thing with an angel, so she sorta gave up on that one."

Trevor felt as though he should say something placating, offer some calming rationale, but again found himself coming up empty, a seed of anger seething in the cool field of his composure. There certainly wasn't any part of what Erin had said that he disagreed with. While she saw to the kitchen, the young man walked purposefully to the trophy room Mark had once shown them, taking stock of any souvenirs that would be dangerous to leave unsupervised. As he looked over the glass cases and pedestals, commemorating decades of adventures, he felt another flash of anger. To turn one's back of all of that... The forces of the Terminus had killed Rick's friends, strictly speaking killed his son, and now that his true power had been awakened, he simply ran to hide? Was the coming threat so great that fear so overwhelmed all other considerations?

"Aw, see, and I actually know what that means, now," Ellie noted with a lopsided grin that was a touch too shy and pleased to pull off sardonic wit. "Old, actually," she answered the question as she reached the bottom of the stairs and smoothed the overlapping fabric of the vest's front with both her hands. "Christmas gift. Grim found it in a vintage shop." She shrugged as she moved over to the kitchenette and picked up the bottle of water set aside for her. "I know, you wouldn't think she'd celebrate it, but it's honestly any excuse for a party with her."

"I swear, you and these pants..." Ellie sighed good-naturedly as she made it up to the raised area of the warehouse and lifted the messenger bag's strap over her head as she stepped into Mara's bedroom. Closing the door softly behind her, the young woman walked in a short arc as she looked about the room before sitting down on the foot of the bed, her hands placed palm downward on either side of her lap. Biting her lower lip lightly, she allowed herself a moment of contemplation before standing up again and retrieving the clothes from her satchel. A few minutes later, she descended the stairs again, wearing slim khaki pants under a loose, light cream coloured blouse, held tight by a fitted vest with a distinctly vintage look to it. Ellie brushed absently at her dyed black hair, which she'd let regain a little of it's former length, causing her customary bangle bracelets to clatter as they slid further down her wrist.

On Mark's other side, Trevor clapped a hand firmly on his friend's shoulder, giving the other young man a brief nod on encouragement. He didn't have any particularly inspiring words or even helpful advice despite his familiarity with parental absence, but his quiet, seemingly immutable presence had a certain comfort to it. He grunted vaguely in agreement with Erin's suggestion; they'd already lost days, evidently, and the sooner preparations could begin the better. Moreover, sitting around the empty house wasn't doing Mark any good. Being around the more informal family of his fellow students was probably the best place for him just then.

"Well, I'd say that skirt was worth the clutter," Ellie grinned, giving the black garment an exaggerated leer that was equal parts suggestive and teasing. Stepping out of the embrace with considerable reluctance, the taller girl moved toward the kitchen and the stairwell up to the loft. "Bedroom works, I won't be long," she promised, skipping up the steps lightly. "Something to drink would be great after running over here; just water, even."

Trevor's expression went completely flat at Mark's explanation, stoically unreadable. He'd had little regard for Rick Lucas to begin with but this was unequivocally despicable. Abandoning not only his son, as if that weren't enough, but his entire world in a crisis... Realization dawned as he read Mark's expression and followed the logic through. "...you wouldn't go with them," he noted softly, making it more a statement than a question. Even Rick wouldn't have left his son behind all on his own given the choice, nor would Mark shy away from his duty as a hero. For all their differences in personality, there were few people Trevor knew more steadfast and courageous than his blond teammate.

Ellie laughed briefly at the momentary delay, a melodic, surprisingly throaty sound, taking the opportunity to slide off her bandanna mask once the door closed behind her before returning the hug. "Hey, Marbar," she greeted with a broad grin that was almost immediately suppressed by the quick kiss she leaned down for. Seeing Mara made her happy, and seeing seeing her make Mara happy made her happy, too, and it was all pretty fantastic even if she had a little trouble following her own train of thought. "Mm, te ves grandioso, muñequita. I'm just going to run up to the bathroom to change, okay?"

Trevor had ample time to look about the unkempt yard as they waited for Mark, a small frown touching his face. Martha Lucas was hardly one to let things fall into such disarray; the lean young man hoped she hadn't had a relapse after her therapy had reportedly been going so well. Their friend's appearance raised far more red flags as they entered, Trevor taking off his sunglasses and placing them in his pocket. "Look terrible," he told Mark bluntly, his brow lowered over his onyx and sanguine eyes. "What happened?"
-
The keys disappeared back into Trevor's pocket as he jogged after Erin, his tone chagrined as he admitted, "Keep forgetting that's an option." Normally he was good about keeping track of his teammates' abilities and potential applications, but some part of his subconscious continued to rebel against the notion of non-wheeled transport. Vague personal preference, however, was of little weight compared to his friend's distress. The idea of the usually chipped and enthusiastic Mark being reduced to tears was galling for the dark haired young man, an affront to the natural order of things that simply would not stand. Hurrying up the stairs to the rooftop, he got a firm grim around Erin's waist and nodded his readiness.

Late afternoon in Greenbank saw a crimson and black blur darting from warehouse rooftop to rooftop, acrobatically picking its way across the city. The days had just started to get perceptibly longer again, enough to light the way, but it wouldn't have done for Ellie Espadas to be spotted walking about the admittedly sketchy area, so it was the masked medic Jill O'Cure who finally arrived at the side of one warehouse in particular, messenger bag slung over her shoulder. Making certain there was no one else about, she rapped quickly on the door, humming absently through a small smile and brushing her unruly bangs out of her eyes.

Trevor's expression turned subtly concerned as soon as he read the same feeling on Erin's face. The young man was rising from his seat as soon as the half of the conversation he could hear suggested that there was somewhere they needed to be with haste. He withdrew the keys to the Night Cycle from his pocket, displaying them to Erin as they hurried toward the garage. She'd be able to fill him in on the detail on the way to wherever they were headed; the weather was still chilly, but the bike had the edge in speed over the pickup.

Worrisome popping sounds and flashes of pain soon paid off as Geckoman managed to extricate himself from the crushing grip of the massive mechanical monster by the slimmest of margins. As the automatons and the remaining ninjas tried in vain to connect with the agile teenager, Freebooter quickly closed the distance with the fallen Miss Americana. "Hate to strike at a beauty who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," the swordsman noted with a small shrug before twisting a dial on the bottom of his cutlass. The neon green diodes redoubled their light and the blade began to vibrate faster than the human eye could perceive, emitting a night pitched whine. "But that's where flying the regime's colours get you!" Leaping forward again, he struck! Taking advantage of her preoccupation, one of the robots that had been concentrating on Spellbound thundered over with surprising speed and slammed a massive fist into the patriotic paragon's back. Freebooter looked vaguely appalled at the tactic. "Who wrote the tactical AI on these rubbish heaps? Tch. Just switching the enemy recognition was lazy, shame on me." As if illustrating his poor assessment, the remaining technological terror squeezed the captive young woman with piston driven force. Evidently giving up on cutting through Miss Americana's super tough skin with their throwing weapons, the last of the Katanarchists made a mad dash from their various perches to grab the unattended Grasscutter!

(17:20:16) Gizmo: February's inductees! (17:20:37) Griffalo: I love Arcturus, Gizmo. (17:23:27) Cubist: [ponders the Citizen portrait] Hmmm... maybe leave the Matrix fade-in effect *off* of his hands/arms? (17:23:37) Gizmo: Nope! (17:24:41) Cubist: [nods] Alright. (17:25:09) Electra: They all look good, though the positioning makes it looks like Mercury just stuck his hand in Sharl's leg. (17:26:35) Gizmo: Look, if the Tronik kid is going to stand right there with gams like that, what's Merc supposed to do? He's only demi-human! (17:26:17) Electra: :!: (17:26:45) Gizmo: If Sharl didn't like it he coula gone intangible, I'm just sayin'. (17:29:44) Electra: Why do you think Mercury ended up with nothing more than a handful of green light? (17:29:57) Gizmo: Oh, that's not light.

A faint green light seemed to flicker about Jill's hand as she irritably drummed her fingers on the table, but allowed cooler heads to prevail when Grim made her plea for civility. Observing Silhouette's hand, however, she let out a flat noise. "Oh, for...!" Sighing in resignation, she tossed her cards face up in front of her, revealing the black fives, the Jacks of Spades and Hearts respectively and the last remaining ace, and identical hand to that of the older woman.

Jill gave Eve a broad smile despite still being a little shaken. She was glad that the telepath had chosen to open up to her friends rather than retreating further into herself after such a traumatic experience, and glad that her first semi-public outing with Mara - pun intended - was going so well. The small brunch had been something of a calculated risk, but it had clearly paid off. "Well, the biblical jokes alone'll keep us coming back," she assured Eve dryly, unconsciously leaning a subtly closer to her date as they held hands under the table.
