'Jill Pique' meets Eve Martel. ...the title's a joke, see?
-
It had already been more than a month since Ellie Espadas had enrolled at Claremont Academy under the pseudonym 'Jill Pique', thanks to some creative records altering by Vince, the Interceptors' gregarious AI. He'd had some concerns that his efforts had been noticed, but come September the headmaster, Duncan Summers, had welcomed her without comment, and so far everything seemed to be going according to plan for her senior year, and her first with super powers. Unfortunately, the plan hadn't actually specified that she make any friends, and so far the coltish teenager had managed to drift through her classes largely like a ghost, unnoticed for better or for worse. Part of the problem was that unlike many of the prestigious private school's students, she didn't actually live on campus, and had found little opportunity to socialize outside of the classroom. Which was why, despite her natural inclinations, she'd decided to wander into the dormitories' common room after her last period that day, hesitantly brushing her dyed black hair behind her ear and feeling a bit like a trespasser.

After another moment's pause, Trevor slid closer to Erin against the sawhorse and rather than trying to drape his arm around her, placed it behind her, resting along the broad beam so that his chest gently nudged her shoulder. There didn't seem to be anything for him to say, and as much as he wanted to hold onto her tightly just then, he knew that would only make him feel better. All he could offer was was his presence and his silent support, hoping that their mutual appreciation for wordless companionship would be enough.

Trevor placed a hand over his eyes, squeezing them tightly closed even as twin stream of inky gas seeped from between his fingers and rose into the early morning sky. Clearing his throat quietly, he lowered the hand, clearly struggling to compose himself. "I..." The youth reconsidered, and was silent again, looking over at the auburn haired girl bleakly. Finally, and very softly, he said, "Thank you for telling me. I didn't... I never... Lord, Erin, I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry."

"Ha! Yeah, 'I have the powah'. Thanks." Embarrassed though she was by laying her social frustrations on Fleur's feet like that, Jill had to admit to herself that she did feel better having talked about it with the green haired heroine. Finishing her donut and washing it down with another swallow of coffee, the slim teenager clapped her hangs together. "Okay! So. Wacky Magic Healing 101. Lead on, teach."
-
By the time Erin released his hand, Trevor had gone absolutely rigid, concentrating all his energy on processing what Erin was saying. Thin wisps of midnight mist had begun to lift subtly from the fabric oh his shirt, though he managed to keep a full on torrent in check. Dimly he realized that there wasn't anything he could say, and the important thing was to give Erin a chance to tell someone the whole story, to say it all aloud. As horrifying as it all was, as powerless as it made him feel, he resolved to give her that chance.

Jill gave Fleur a dubious look. "Yeeeaaah... I don't know what high school was like for you, but you can totally organize the charity bakesale and still turn around and ostracize someone just fine, believe me." Wincing heavily she shrugged, taking another sip of her coffee. "Bitter much, right? I mean, you're right, I should probably try joining the AV club or whatever, make some friends, but... I guess I just got so burnt out I got used to not even trying." Sniffing, she rubbed the back of her hand over her face quickly with a half-hearted chuckle. "Sorry, I'm not usually like this, honest."
-
Trevor's mouth was closed now, compressed into a thin line. His already pale complexion has taken on an ashen whiteness, and while he kept the hand in Erin's light, the other gripped the edge of the sawhorse with long, thin fingers and aching knuckles. He had no idea how to respond, what he could possibly do or say to make her feel better, even as her distraught expression tore at him inside. Ultimately, he could only stand still and silent, listening as he cursed himself for having nothing more to offer.

"Nice!" Jack congratulated Gaian Knight as he swiftly dispatched the remaining duplicates. "So, what's this jerk go by, anway? Lemme guess: Doub-Bill!" Jill snorted as she let her force field fence shimmer away and walked casually to stand next to her brother. "Not everyone needs to make their sobriquet a horrible, horrible pun, y'know." "You did," the elder sibling pointed out, crossing his arms. "Yeah, 'cause you'd already established a theme, hadn't you?" She crossed her own arms in response. "Honestly, I was my hands of it."

The slight smile slipped from Trevor's face the moment Erin mentioned periodic flu scares. He was intuitive enough to see where she was going with that line of thought, and by the time she mentioned her father, his mouth was slightly ajar in a bleak expression. "I... knew it had to be something like that," he murmured softly, "but I didn't want to dig into it until you were ready to tell me yourself. God." Letting out a long breath, he ran his free hand through his black hair. "Take your time."

As colour and detail began seeping back into the area around him, The Blank sniffed haughtily "I blinded and deafened her, Hex. One would think one of you could have made sure she stayed in one place."The white clad young man took an odd satisfaction in the difficulty Singularity was giving them, if only because it made the malicious probability controller look foolish. "Well, after you, oh fearless leader," he continued, tone dripping with insincerity.

"Hey," Trevor stopped her, reaching out and placing his hand atop hers. "Want to make this clear, because sometimes we'll be getting shot at or the world's about to explode or a million other things." His tone deadpan and matter-of-fact, he turned so that he could look her straight in the eye, his glossy, black and red orbs intently earnest. "Never too busy for you. Okay?" The corner of his mouth twitched upward reassuringly as he nodded for her to continue.

Jill blinked again, doing her best to keep up with Fleur's casual demonstrations. "You have your own planet," she repeated once more, "with flowers that grow donuts. I... there are no words." Retrieving a chocolate glazed confection from the box, and took a small bite, covering a soft smile with the mug of coffe. "Friends, right. Heh." Looking back up she nodded to her hostess. "Well, in theory, yeah. I mean, I'm there for class, but all the cool kids live in the dorms, so I'm totally the townie new kid nobody knows, which is actually still a step up for me. I know, apparently super-angst is one of my powers too, right? Well, whatever, it's going to make getting a university scholarship way easier, anyway."
-
"Oh, heh, yeah," he agreed, retrieving his white t-shirt and pulling it over his head. "Just can't move as well in them as I used to. Grown out of them, I guess." Straightening the top, he gave Erin a look of subdued concern, picking up on her unease immediately. "Of course," he assured her, leaning next to her on the section of the sawhorse she'd vacate. "Is... this a 'we need to talk' talk or...?"

Trevor continued flipping about the equipment until a midair twist brought him into the right alignment to notice Erin down below. With a small smile, he caught the nearest beam, arresting his spin and swinging back and forth for a moment until his momentum had diminished. "Hey," he greeted softly, dropping to the ground lightly and sauntering over. "Morning." Not long ago he would have been considerably more self conscious about being caught in the middle of a training exercise let alone half clothed, but he had to admit there were some nice side benefits to finally filling out his tall frame.

As the sun began creeping over the horizon, Trevor Hunter was balanced on the gymnastic equipment on the Claremont campus, one booted foot perched on a balance beam while the other hovered in the air. His shirt hung nearby on a sawhorse next to an empty mug and his fedora as he remained perfectly still for a long moment before abruptly swinging down so that he was hanging upside down on by the same foot, hands shooting forward to grasp the next bean and vault him into an aerial somersault. Inwardly, he kept his mind studiously blank, concentrating solely on the exercise, the sheer physicality helping him achieve a crystalline clarity.

"Uh, no, actually," Jill admitted a little sheepishly, running a hand through her hair self consciously. "I was kinda, well, excited this morning and wasn't really paying attention, so I, well... I sorta 'death hand'-ed my grapefruit. Not pretty." Coughing lightly, she looked upward and took a deep breath before turning back to Fleur. "It's still sort of insane that I can call up a real superhero to hang out. I mean, obviously this is 'work' related, and I wouldn't be bugging you otherwise but, well, I mean..." The coltish teen trailed off, evidently deciding silence was her best option at this point to avoid further embarrassment.

"Hex, do us all a favour and be silent," The Blank growled, setting down on the road in front of Singularity. As he did, the area all around them seemed to brighten, then loose detail, as his white out took hold. Outwardly betraying no hesitation, he pulled a long, thin cylinder from his jacket and, using his metahuman senses despite the field of blank void, leveled the barrel at the thrashing young woman and thumbed the firing stud, sending a lance of high frequency noise in her direction. When she shook off the screech, he grimaced under his mask. "Sorry, kid," he muttered softly before turning the dial on the sonic cannon up to its highest setting and fired again.

Vince waved Fulcrum's concerns away. "Pshaw, like I wouldn't make with the compliments anyway. You're a good looking bunch." His image disappeared from the wall and popped on on one of the monitors in the center of the room, right next to Jack. "Have you seen what this guys does with a pair of tights?" "It's true, I'm fabulous," Jack confirmed for their guests in a tone that suggest the recital of dry fact. While he dug into his dessert with abandon, his sister seemed distracted, watching Harrier intently. As the former Omegadrone stated his flavour preference, the teenage girl reflexively covered her mouth with both hands to contain a high pitched sound. "Dios, I want to get him a blanket and a hot chocolate and a colouring book," she whispered to Vince's projected avatar. "What's that about?" The AI shifted his outfit to include an apron and curly grey wig. "Maternal instincts, I'm sure," he suggested. "Keenly developed from taking care of big bro all these years." Next to them, Jack paused with his milk to his mouth, making a questioning noise that reverberated in the glass, eliciting a sigh from his sibling.

Jill snorted derisively. "Yeah, I'll be a real hit when the disco ball breaks down." The teen gave her hands a quick shake, and the lights winked out. "I guess it's been, what, a little more than a month now? I haven't had much chance to experiment, no. I, uh, was a little worried about screwing up while I was working on someone. I haven't tried it on anything besides people at all."

"Oh, uh, right," Jill nodded, bringing each of her gloved hands up to chest level. The right lit up slowly with a faint blue light, dappled spots moving about lazily as though radiating though leaves moving in the breeze. "Basically, I touch someone and think about what's wrong with them, like a broken bone or poison or whatever, and the glow just sorta kick starts their body into fixing it. Sometimes it feels like I'm actually in there, doing surgery with my mind, but that might just be in my head." The left hand, in turn, radiated a virulent green, dark speckles moving ominously within its light. "'Cause of the way I got my powers, I got the flip side of the coin, too. This one makes people sick as all get out. Nothing fatal... I think. Wouldn't want to push it, though." She didn't mention that she wasn't really sure which of the two powers was the one she was born with and which was created by the enchantments of the Jack of Coins card. "I can sort of extend that bio-electric field into decent barriers, if I want. Gotten the most play out of that one so far, honestly."
-
After another moment's pause, Jill repeated, "You have your own planet." Looking back to Fleur she grinned broadly. "Can I just say I totally want to be you when I grow up?" Accepting the coffee, she poured a bit of cream into it to cool it down more quickly, taking a sip without bothering to stir it. "But, yeah, I was hoping you could give me some healing tips. I'm used to patching mi hermano up the old fashioned way, and the whole 'laying on of hands' deal is sorta weird, still."
