Jill looked like she wanted to comment on Lynn's recreational activities with Colt, but restrained herself to nodding. "Sure. You know what my brother does?" The teenager took a seat at the counter facing the shapeshifter. "He starts thinking." She spread her hands. "I'm guessing you've noticed he doesn't like to stand still for long, right? When he's doing his thing with the stabbity stab stab, he can just react. Give him five minutes of downtime, though..." Her expression falling, Jill sighed. "He starts thinking about the dealer he didn't get that night, the gun he didn't keep of the streets, the clerk that's maybe gonna get held up, try to be a hero, get his head blown off. And because he fails at logic forever, Jack thinks that'd somehow be his fault. 'Cause he could have stayed out there one more hour, y'know? Made just a little more of a difference." Jill looked at her feet, swinging them back and forth absently. "Used to be he had other stuff, too. Working all those jobs to pay the bill, save for my tuition. Still always moving, but it kept him balanced. Now, he gets paid to do... this." She gestured around the brownstone's interior. "He almost never even stops by at home, anymore. Not unless we need him to fix something or whatever." Sniffing, she rubbed the back of her forearm across her eyes, taking a deep breath as she refused to let her eyes water. "Aw, hell..."

The ride back to Claremont was pleasantly peaceful, as the quiet stillness of the night was left unbroken by the Night Cycle's silent engines. A brief scan of the police radio frequencies courtesy of a miniaturized device from Midnight's belt confirmed that the would-be electronics thieves had been apprehended without incident. Trevor's deft driving allowed them to slip back onto the school grounds and stow the bike away without notice before moving back toward the dormitories. The lanky young man nodded in a subdued bow. "A lovely night on the town."

Looking from Erin to James, Trevor tilted his chin upward slightly. "I'll go. Eve knows me. Besides, don't have to worry about running into a double or fan girl mobs." If it wasn't for his remarkable deadpan, the last thought might have almost qualified as snarky. Instead, removing his domino mask and placing it in his shirt pocket, he unrolled his sleeves and made himself presentable for a recital.

The monitor next to the kitchen table sprang to life with a black and white image on a city street. Vince, the Interceptors' gregarious AI aide stood over a steaming sewer grate, trying in vain to keep his billowing white dress from blowing up to reveal a set of distinctly masculine, unshaven legs. "I feel so violated!" he blushed before snapping his fingers and reappearing in his customary talk show host suit, arms crossed and expression irritated. "I would've made the place airtight, but some people need to breathe, apparently." Exaggerated hand gestures displayed how unreasonable he found the demand. "He's saying Dok A asked him to screw around," Jack of all Blades supplied flatly, giving Avenger a cool look. The swordsman wasn't sure if he was more annoyed that the vampire had so cavalierly invaded their privacy or that his metahuman awareness hadn't tipped him off throughout the day. "They belong to the same 'Pull Jerk Moves 'Cause We now Better That You' club. Pretty sure they have matching bowling shirts." The lights in the entire room suddenly shut off, save for a single beam which spotlighted Vince's screen. The AI's avatar struck a melodramatic pose, puffy shirt and pantaloons marking him as a classical Shakespearean actor. "Betrayed by my very creator! Alas and alack!" The lights flicked back on and Vince spun a prop skull like a basketball on one finger. "Seriously though, as the guy who's body you're essentially sitting in right now? Get. Out." Jack suppressed a smirk. Avenger probably couldn't tell but Grim and Colt at least would be able to recognize the AI imitating the swordsman's own mannerisms when he was well and truly angry. Vince was still growing, adding new emotions and responses to his repertoire every day. Jack suspected he was less enraged at Avenger than hurt that Archeville hadn't let him know about the test ahead of time. "You heard the man, Broodmeister," he agreed, moving to stand next to the monitor. "Get packing."

"Should look for Geckoman, too," Trevor suggested, the eyes of his domino mask narrowing. "He's... he's The Raven now." The dark haired young man's tone held the faintest hint of a grumble, suggesting that even his near preternatural patience was being tested by this altered reality. Outwardly, however, he maintained his composure. "Can you bring up the Bank of Freedom?" he asked James. "Something odd there, too."

Throughout Lynn's tirade, an amused smirk blossomed on Jill's lips. "Daaaaamn," she drawled, "Small but feisty. For the record, Jack can be arrogant, sanctimonious and judgmental." The teen crossed her arms, her eyes reflecting a shadow of the chill the shapeshifter had mentioned earlier. "Also for the record? I'm the only one who gets to talk about mi hermano that way. ¿Comprende?" With a sigh, Jill looked to the heavens as she searched for the right words. "Let me try to give you some context, alright? Let's say you've just had a full day of smashing in drug dealers' heads or whatever. What do you do to unwind when you get back here?"

Jack blinked for a moment, trying to ascertain whether or not teenager was kidding. Finally he broke out laughing. "Damn, chica, loosen up!" Tilting his head to one side, his expression softened as he raised an eyebrow. "Hey, you know we wouldn't be letting 'Head run around if he wasn't on the level, right?" Glancing over at Avenger and Lukos, he suppressed a wince. "We're, uh, usually pretty good about that sort of thing."

With a quick glance at the watch on the inside of his left wrist, Trevor rose from the booth and inclined slightly from the waist. "True, and I turn back into a pumpkin at dawn," he deadpanned. Fishing a pair of neatly folded bills from a jacket pocket, he dealt with the check before moving to the front of the diner. Although he had a variety of credit cards routed through various hidden accounts for emergencies, it was hard to beat cash for sheer untraceability. Opening the door, he leaned against it to prop it open for Erin.

ic Fisticuffs 2: Dynamo vs Jack of All Blades (IC)
Gizmo replied to Geez3r's topic in Sewers and Subways
"Instead of letting your feet do the thinking for you, huh?" Jack laughed openly. Giving Dynamo a more serious look, he continued, "Tell you what, as long as I'm doing the Miyagi thing, here's your homework: figure out why you're doing this." The swashbuckler raise a forestalling hand. "I know you think you don't have a reason, but human beings don't spit in the face of millennia of self preservation instincts 'just 'cause'. It doesn't have to be specific or complicated, but it's there." Jack shrugged. "You figure that out, the rest'll get a lot easier."- 35 replies

Hurr hurr, that's what she said. Given the time frame, both Dynamo and Fulcrum should be on hand as well. I say we wait and let them chime in before going any further.
-
"Huh," Jack considered aloud. "Well, we've all got our buttons, right?" Clapping Geckoman on the back, the swordsman jogged over to Wander with a wave. "Hey, Slugger! I was just telling Goggles over there that if you're any indication, Claremont must have one helluva girl's softball team! What're they feeding you kids in the school cafeteria?"

Trevor was about to clarify his statement when James began his impromptu speech. Despite a growing kernel of irritation, the lanky young man allowed high school student turned alien prince to finish before speaking, merely folding his arms. Giving James a brief look, he turned to Erin. "He's literally dead. Already." Without turning back to Hellion, he quietly instructed, "Bring up a view of the Sentry Statue."

Not at all, Trevor thought back amiably. His thoughts had a soft, calming quality to them, but there was the impression of the still surface of a very, very deep lake. "Do you mind if we speak aloud?" the lanky teen asked, his voice carrying the same quiet assuredness as his thoughts. "Easier for Miss Karakuri and I." The dark haired youth gave a shallow but deferential nod to the stiff young woman.

Both of Jill's eyebrows went up at that. "'Cold'? Hurr..." The teenager winced as she resumed pacing. "Yeah, no, that's actually kinda messed up." Planting her palms over her eyes and craning her neck upward, she let out an irritated groan. "Ugh, I was afraid something like this was going to happen." Turning to Lynn, she raised a finger determinedly. "I am going to give that moron such a freaking talking to, I swear, not that he ever actually listens."

Trevor waved the thought away with a brief flick of his wrist. "Even, if you keep me from getting bored and causing a scene." The lanky teen rubbed the back of his neck with a mild wince. "Traditionally, I've been on the... blunt side, comparatively." Trevor might have been excellent at keeping his cool in nearly any situation, but perhaps as a result, he wasn't always very good at realizing what might set someone else off. Sharing his honest opinion at lavish parties and social event had caused the occasional issue in the past.

ic Fisticuffs 2: Dynamo vs Jack of All Blades (IC)
Gizmo replied to Geez3r's topic in Sewers and Subways
Jack placed his hand behind his head and lounged in the seat. "Ha, I think you're safe with 'dude' and 'bro'. Look, don't over think it too much; it's not like you're being censored or anything." The swashbuckler scratched hi chin and considered. "General rule of thumb? Stick to insulting your opponent, not a whole group, y'know? Ugly face, stupid plan, ridiculous costume - you're going to get a lot of millage out of that one - goofy codename, lame powers." He gave the speedster a sidelong glance. "You've got like... accelerated perception or whatever, yeah? Just use some of that extra time to think twice."- 35 replies

Taking in the interior of the spaceship, Trevor adjusted the collar of his dress shirt self-consciously as he moved to follow James. "Hrm," he murmured as they walked, hoping that Erin hadn't been able to watch the scene below from the 'control room'. "Saw my bike," he noted to the transformed Hellion. "That's the least of it." He hadn't really gotten a chance to meet James yet, knowing him mostly by reputation and offhand comments from Erin. The Prophets were a well known family in the circles his grandfather and, to a lesser extent, Trevor himself traveled in, and well respected, but by all accounts James was very much the black sheep of the clan. Regardless, Erin seemed to trust him implicitly, and he was inclined to follow her lead. A less charitable voice pointed out that he instinctively disliked the silky smooth charmer for exactly the same reason, particularly after watching James deftly handle the members of Teen Freedom so cavalierly. As the pair reached the control room, Trevor nodded in greeting then unceremoniously announced, "Rick Lucas is dead."

ic Fisticuffs 2: Dynamo vs Jack of All Blades (IC)
Gizmo replied to Geez3r's topic in Sewers and Subways
Jack walked stiffly over the sit next to Dynamo. "Hey, Zippy, we fight guys who shoot lasers out their ears for fun. 'Stupid' is kinda a prerequisite." He indicated the symbol on the speedster's chest. "So make it mean something. You've got a chance to stand for something, right? And yes, that's a totally insane amount of responsibility to throw at someone. Welcome to it." Giving Dynamo a smirk, Jack shrugged. "You already decided to help people with your powers instead of being some bank robbing spaz or something, so, y'know, off to a good start."- 35 replies

Rounding about from his trip to the fridge, Jack of all Blades spewed a mouthful of orange juice all over the back of the suddenly appearing vampire's head. "Gah!" he coughed, wiping his mouth with the back of his free hand and setting down his glass. Abruptly realizing that he wasn't wearing his mask, he scrambled to grab his bandanna and wig from his coat's pocket before admitting the futility of the gesture. "Dios, you're a creepy guy, you know that? Man, I'ma have to start wearing this thing when I sleep now..." he groused. Avenger was definitely not on the list of people he was comfortable revealing his true appearance to, even if his face would presumably mean little to the undead hero.

Catching Jame's eye as Erin's double turned to face the new arrival and cocked an eyebrow, the expression exaggerated by his domino mask, silently mouthing 'handsomest prince of space?' As the girls of Teen Freedom regarded them he cautiously replied, "...yes, it's important that we work together to fix what which is wrong with the world." He gave 'Hel-Ion' a curt but meaningful nod. "I was just investigating that myself," he agreed. "We'll let you know if we find anything important," he told the Teen Freedomettes, deciding to deal with two bird with one stone by adding, "There's a disturbance at the Bank of Freedom, as well. I trust the... prince and I can leave that in your capable hands?"

Jack of all Blades grumbled with mock annoyance. "Hmph, if anybody's 'Jack from the West End', it's me." Leaving Avenger and his new friend to be mutually broody and oblique, he turned his attention back to the gathered heroes' various reactions to Dead Head. He gave an approving nod as the other girl from Claremont introduced herself, clearly unnerved but working through it. The undead creature might have been incredibly disturbing to look at, too say nothing of his unsettling necromatic energies, but in Jack's book he was good people. Noting Dead Head's earlier attacker standing off to one side, he raised an eyebrow as the girl tried to play off the looks she was getting as the zombie established himself in good stead with the gathered heroes. The swordsman turned to Geckoman. "So what's the deal with your gal pal there? She gonna be alright?"

ic Fisticuffs 2: Dynamo vs Jack of All Blades (IC)
Gizmo replied to Geez3r's topic in Sewers and Subways
Jack rubbed his eyes, doing his best to be patient as he declined the proffered snacks. "Okay, first? You really can't pull off 'broheem'." The swashbuckler nodded to one side thoughtfully, adding, "To be fair, I'm not sure anybody can, really, but coming from Mr. Middle-Class White America? Seriously, I'm getting a rage-headache, here." Leaning against one of the ring's poles nonchalantly, Jack did his best to play off how much he needed its support as he recovered from the brief fight. The swordsman crossed his arms and kept his voice low enough that in didn't travel to the stands; disparaging Dynamo in front on an audience certainly wasn't going to help anyone. "Don't get me wrong, you've got the right idea. Getting your opponent riled up can give you a serious edge if you keep cool yourself. But you've gotta have standards. Nothing cheeses a villain off more than having the moral high ground thrown in their face." He gave the slightly younger man a flat look. "C'mon, that 'flaming' crack? You'd think a speedster in this city would have a little more class than that. Same goes for the quote-unquote ethnic humour. You're a superhero, not a shock jock."- 35 replies

"And have the cat angry with me?" Trevor shook his head. "Disposable income, remember? Sure I can work something." Tilting his head slightly to one side, he arched a brow. "Think I'd ask you to come and buy a new outfit? My grandfather would disown me." Being raised by Travis Hunter had given Trevor a somewhat outdated value system, it was true. Of course, the original Midnight hadn't exactly been a conventional man in his own time, so perhaps it accounted for his protege's collection of understated quirks more than anything. Regardless, he had fairly specific ideas about what it meant to be a gentleman.

Trevor's domino mask blinked as he looked down at Wander's hand on hop of his own. Hoo, boy. Well, at least this established beyond a doubt that this wasn't the Erin to whom he had grown accustomed. Raising his gaze to the rest of Teen Freedom, the lanky young man was stuck by a sudden feeling of being surrounded. A less scrupulous lad might have attempted to take advantage of the situation; Trevor was frankly more concerned with what the real Erin would do if she found out. Dipping into his altered memories, he pulled back his hand to form a melodramatic fist as he answered, "I care for all who would stand between the innocent and evil's malevolent touch." 'Kid Midnight', he decided privately, was a bit of a twit, not to mention a tease.
