While the young heroes mowed through the towering skeletons with impressive speed sheer numbers were not on their side. The horde shambled forward, breaking impossibly thick trunks in two without a thought and leaving massive tracks in the snow. The skeletons closest to Papercut raised their bony hands toward him and suddenly shards of ice sprayed toward the paper plane riding Detroit native, shrapnel the size of javelins filling the air. Another group converged on Citizen, fists larger than the entire robotic body he was inhabiting swinging with surprising speed and expected strength. Temperance got the worst of it as the jotun skeletons who had stayed upright in the face of her sheet of ice reached out to grab the source of their inconvenience. The elementalist ducked under one set of ivory claws and thwarted the next with an icy barrier but the third wrapped its fingers - three bone and two made of unnatural ice - around her and hauled her off her her feet, squeezing painfully.

"Pants be terrible," Set insisted, dumping her own funnel cake onto Sekhmet's mostly emptied paper plate. "Nothing good has ever happened to me while wearing pants. A scourge on the age! Truly, hiding those away seems borderline unethical, Auntie," she opined, waving a plastic fork in the direction of Taylor's thighs before tossing it in a nearby receptacle. Preening a bit and lifting her thick, brick red dreadlocks off of her shoulders she continued to chatter away as they walked. "And there be far better alternatives, aye! Now, I hardly be one to boast about my figure, but since you mention--" "She cheats," Sekhmet interjected around a mouthful of funnel cake, folding the second confection in half and eating it indelicately with her hands. Continuing to eat she explained flatly, "Shapeshifting. She could not conceal a cat's whisker in there otherwise." Bronze cheeks colouring with red, Set folded her arms protectively over her chest. "S-Sekhmet! You cannot just say such things aloud!" Sekhmet patted the shorter goddess on the head, getting powdered sugar in her hair while she licked her other hand clean in a particularly feline gesture. "There there. At least thy did not have to come of age next to Hathor." Turning to Taylor, she shrugged her bare shoulders. "What would thee suggested, Lady Phantom? The funneled cakes were excellent, as thee predicted."
-
"Phaw, the Mistress of Dread cares not for paltry niceties," Sekhmet insisted, tossing her head in a way that flicked her asymmetrical bangs into the air haughtily but her expression did become a little closer to an actual smile at Phantom's words. "I would be pleased to instruct thee in the manner in which I earned my titles but in truth thy be a most agreeable sort, Lady Phantom. Making thy presence seem unwelcome may be an uphill battle." Swiping though the photos to find the best one, Set bounced on her heels and held the smartphone to her chest like a great treasure. "Oh, as if you be not a big softy yourself, Sekhmet," she teased happily as she grabbed Taylor's arm again and led the way back onto the main bath over the warrior goddess' indignant protests to the contrary. Forgoing the potential pun provided by corndogs the godling decided to defer to the sorceress' greater if somewhat dated amusement park experience and made a beeline for a booth which offered to deep fry an increasingly unlikely list of comestibles. Deciding that even with a godly fortitude a deed fried chocolate bar on a stick sounded like a poor idea, she instead paid for three funnel cakes piled generously with powdered sugar from a conspicuously thick roll of bill again produced from her cross halter.

"No." At some point between Mike looking down at his feet and raising his chin Trevor had appeared next to Erin in the foyer, materializing almost as suddenly as the trio had teleported in. The oil stained jeans and fade t-shirt the dark haired heir to the Hunter fortune wore suggested he'd been in the middle of some automotive work and certainly lowered the bar for Mike's outfit but how he'd made it to the front door from the garage so quickly was anyone's guess. Still one the the few Young Freedom alumni who could almost look the broad slab of powerhouse in the eyes, Trevor gave Mike a characteristically serious look, ruby irises reflecting light from the chandelier overhead. "Ample room. Easier to arrange permanent accommodations from within the city." He looked to his fiance as he placed an arm around her waist and deadpanned in the same soft, level voice, "Also, Erin would kick me out if I argued." Looking back to Mike he paused for a moment, observing his face in detail. "Sorry to hear plan went poorly." It was about as many words as he'd ever spoken to the other man in one go.

Set had no time for banter or speeches, only a haunting, animal howl that echoed through the emptied city streets above the rumble of thunder and the rush of water that accompanied Monsoon's arrival. He gestured violently with fingers curled into claws and in response crimson lightning surged down from above, strike after eye searingly bright strike, like an archer emptying their quiver. The first bolt crashed directly into the pretender's chest then the next took him from behind but after that the strikes came too quickly to keep track. As the heavens disgorged their fury Set's shout began to resolve into a recognizable word. "BUUUUURN!" Sekhmet touched down on the street in time to see the furious electrical assault... and to see the false god only the slightest bit phased by it. "Blessed Ra," she breathed, clenching her fists at her sides. The impostor was somehow as powerful as the Avenger's earthly vessel had ever been, unlike the diminished form crafted for her mission watching over the screaming godling. Some part of Sekhmet was dimly aware that this was not a fight she could possibly hope to win but that aspect had not a single grain of weight in her actions. "Champion!" she called to the water witch as she fell forward, form shifting fluidly into that of a tawny lioness. "Hold nothing back!" She matched deed to word and charged forward, pouncing through the air like a missile of powered by muscle and tore her prey with flashing tooth and claw.

In another time and place Jack might have continued to rib Wildcat with even more obnoxious nicknames or might have even exercised the patience he showed his students at the dojo but not there and not with Steve missing. Objectively the younger man wasn't being unreasonable but the growl in his voice was getting on the swordsman's last nerve. "Kid, you're going to listen to me because I've been doing this since before your hairballs dropped and I've fought my way off more backwoods rocks, dimensions and fairy tales than you've got lives, comprende?" he retorted in a tone so carefully modulated and calm that it carried a poorly veiled threat of its own. "You want a big boy name, Meow Mix? Start proving you deserve one." Any further argument was interrupted by the cybernetic dinosaur and its rider. Jack wasn't entirely clear what the black hatted rider was trying to call them but he recognized the tone of a slur well enough. "Seems like that kind of day, sure," he sighed to himself as he took a few steps forward to position himself between the other heroes and the beast. "Hey Gecks, if I beat up the loudmouth, think you can figure out how to drive a dinosaur?"

"My discretion be frequently remarked upon," Set agreed, resting her cheek in one palm as she gave Phantom's new attire one was head to toe inspection, still grinning from ear to ear. There was nothing sly or teasing about the smile this time, full of gleaming white teeth; this was the unironic warmth of a handmade gift garnering a positive reaction. It looked a little out of place on the godling's face, as though it wasn't an expression she'd had much opportunity to practice. "Funnel cake for humanity, indeed! First, though, a self portrait!" She produced her smartphone again, somewhat improbably, from the modest cleavage provided by her cross halter, promising, "Shall not end up online, Auntie, god's honor! Lady of Slaughter, get over hence!" Her free arm elongated with a sort of serpentine fluidity to grab the warrior goddess' wrist and lank her over to stand on Taylor's other side, the Heliopolians with their chins above the sorceress' shoulders to fit in frame. "Remember to smile, Sekhmet. Sekhmet, smile. You be not smiling. Smile, Sekhmet. You-- nay, smile. Smile. Sekhmet. Sekhmet. Smile, Sekhmet." Before long the annoyance of the nagging outweighed the taller woman's stubborn dislike for having her photo taken and she bared her teeth, canines unusually prominent. Set sighed. "Close enough." The arm holding the phone stretched outward this time, pointing back toward them. "Ibis face, ladies!"

Reagent / Alkahest Power Level: 8 / 15 (232/250PP) [258] Unspent Power Points: 18 Trade-Offs: Reagent: +2 Attack / -2 Damage (Bartitsu Cane), None (Alchemical Flasks), +4 Defense / -4 Toughness Alkahest: -5 Attack / +5 Damage, -5 Defense / +5 Toughness In Brief: Victorian-era alchemist struggling to contain a merciless force of nature. Theme: Heads Will Roll by Yeah Yeah Yeahs Alternate Identity: Winifred Wei Identity: Semi-Secret Birthplace: London, England Occupation: Student Affiliations: Claremont Academy Family: None Living; Wei Chao (father, deceased), Wei Xia (mother, deceased) Description: Age: 18 (Subjectively; DoB: April, 1839) Gender: Female Ethnicity: British Chinese Height: 5'4" / 8'6" Weight: 120 lbs. / 600 lbs. Eyes: Green Hair: Black Winifred Wei is a slim young woman characterized by her impeccable comportment and intense demeanor. Her jet black hair has recently been styled in a tidy pixie cut with sharp edges that keep it off of her heart-shaped face. Perpetual dark circles under her eyes speak to a lack of sleep and abundance of stress but her tone of voice is nevertheless clipped and precise. While gradually growing accustomed to modern fashions she still tends toward conservative styles and colours. When expecting trouble she carries a broad leather bandolier filled with stoppered vials of alarmingly coloured alchemical concoctions and is rarely seen without her elegant mahogany walking stick with its serpentine styled head. Alkahest, by contrast, is a pallid mass of twisting, too-dense muscle with a greyish, corpse-like tint. Towering even with a pronounced stoop, her proportions are only nominally human and give only the most general indication of gender. Milky white eyes staring out from behind long, disheveled hair and a flat expression betray nothing as the beast stalks her target with a terrifying single-mindedness. The transformation is violent and chaotic, shredding conventional clothing and taxing the capabilities of skin-tight morphic molecules. Fortunately the Academy has been able to provide her with a looser, high collared lab coat made of the adaptive material. History: Wei Chao emigrated from Hong Kong to London in 1833 by taking a job as a deckhand for a prominent shipping company. Skilled at absorbing and applying new information and with a humble charm that ingratiated him with the company's officers, he made himself an indispensable assistant to the ship's doctor when a seafaring mishap left several sailors injured. With the help of his sponsor, in impressively short order and causing something of a stir Chao was accepted to the University of Cambridge to study medicine. Artfully walking the line between impressing his teachers and peers with his abilities without stepping on anyone's toes in a few year's time he had established himself enough to send for his wife, Xia. Similarly brilliant, she soundly invested the early profits of her husband's modest practice and the couple made themselves quite comfortable. In 1839, after considerable difficulty, they had a daughter, Winifred. Fully assimilated and conscious of their social standing Chao and Xia practiced only enough of their homeland's traditions to benefit from the Western fascination with orientalism. Raised as a native Londoner, Winifred demonstrated prodigious intelligence from a very young age, if not the restraint and moderation her parent's practiced so carefully. Frustrated by the assumptions leveled against her based on ethnicity, gender and youth her talents for biting sarcasm and humiliating her detractors were a frequent source of contention at home. Assimilated or not, Chao was uncomfortable with the idea of his daughter marrying an Englishman and was convinced after months of cajoling to allow her to work as his assistant, at least for the time being. Having devoured the contents of her father's medical texts even as a child, as a teenager Winifred chafed under the limited scope of a practicing physician. Scouring the city for more obscure tomes she found herself drawn into the booming community of fringe researchers who preferred to refer to their collective areas of study as 'rogue science' but were referred to in hushed tones in polite society as simply mad. Thrilled to learn from such progressive - if frequently unhinged - thinkers Winifred was particularly drawn to the mysteries of alchemy, throwing herself into its study unbeknownst to her parents. Starting with a foundation in the alchemy of Hellenistic Egypt, pouring over diagrams purportedly copied from originals saved from the Library of Alexandria, she studied the writings of Jābir ibn Hayyān and Roger Bacon, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and Jan Baptist van Helmont among so many others. She found early success in dramatically improving the effectiveness of her father's tonics and moved on to more outlandish concoctions, such as a sticky tar that burst into flames when it came into contact with air and in one case a particularly potent airborne hallucinogen. Expanding her scope to Chinese alchemy and Indian rasayāna then even dubious information surrounding supernatural creatures she began to form her own theories about a serum that would not only cure infirmity but strengthen a person to the limits of human capability, granting perfect health, clarity and perhaps even immortality. Her initial experiments along these lines were not promising but she could feel herself getting closer, on the very cusp of a monumental breakthrough. It was at this point that her parents discovered the increasingly conspicuous laboratory she had been hiding in her room along with her collection of esoteric writings. Horrified and frightened both for Winifred's safety and the family's public image they forbade her from any further scientific studies. Blaming themselves for leaving her too idle they hurriedly made plans to have her married off, hoping to put the whole thing behind them before the matter could become explosively public - perhaps literally. Railing against the injustice and indignity, Winifred locked herself in her room and redoubled her efforts in a frenzy. Deciding that the consequences could be damned, she downed the latest version of her serum and immediately doubled over in agony. What followed she was only ever able to recall in a hazy blur: tearing clothing, the wall of her family home reduced to loose brick and dust, a thunderous boom and spreading flame, sharp cracks and wet pops and shouting constabulary. When she came to, gasping for air and wearing tattered rags, barely strong enough to stand, she knew she had created something truly monstrous, become something monstrous. She could feel the creature, her other self, barely contained and threatening to emerge again and could see only one solution. Stumbling from shadow to shadow, she broke into the hidden laboratory of one of her fellow rogue scientists she mixed a poison that would do more than just kill her, even taking into account the formidable fortitude she estimated the creature to possess. It would render her body wholly inert, preventing any chance of contamination or of her work being replicated through the study of her remains. With a sobbed plea for forgiveness, she swallowed the draught. Her flesh hardened, turning to a glossy, jade-like substance and leaving Winifred Wei, alchemical prodigy, an unexplained statue of a huddled, grief stricken youth. Personality & Motivation: Well aware of her own impressive intelligence and used to having to prove it to others, Winifred has had her confidence severely undercut by the botched serum that created Alkahest. Given what now happens when she becomes upset, however, both aspects have been bottled up as best she can manage. She strives to be collected and professional at all times, leaving her seeming somewhat cold and distant apart from a dry wit that seeps through from time to time. The only thing her condition hasn't been able to damped is her curiosity and need to understand how things work. She is ultimately a scientist before all else and she now has the entirely new world of the modern day to discover and peel apart. She's happiest given solitude and a well stocked chemistry lab. Although her transformed state is obviously more physically capable Winifred sees little potential for good in it. Principled and steadfast, she won't back down from a confrontation particularly in the defense of others but much prefers to labour under her own merits, doing everything she reasonably can to avoid turning into Alkahest. While she views the creature as a largely separate entity from herself she considers herself responsible for its actions all the same and works hard to do as much good as she can when she's herself to make up for them. Powers & Tactics: In combat Reagent carries a bandolier of flasks with a variety of alchemical potions. These range from a fairly straight-forward explosive to a fast acting hallucinogenic cloud to a draught that rapidly accelerates natural healing. Most of these she tosses like grenades, the flasks shattering on impact and releasing their contents, but since she can only carry so many at a time and because they are indiscriminate in their effects she in careful to choose her moments. More precise is her reinforced walking stick with which she is fully proficient but if a conflict has come down to a face to face confrontation something has probably gone very wrong along the way. Alkahest is a single-minded force of nature. It has no tactics, only its target, which it pursues without pause or mercy. Strong and nigh-invulnerable, Alkahest will plow through walls, obstacles, friend and foe alike to get at the subject of its unspoken wrath then pummel it until it stops moving. Once that happens the creature chooses a new target, on and on until it has calmed enough to revert back to an exhausted Winifred. Complications: Chemical Mixture That Creates Chaos: Winifred is continuing to experiment with the serum that turned her into Alkahest, searching for a cure. Dangerous knowledge in the wrong hands. Electing to Ignore It: Winifred was an iconoclast to begin with and removed from concerns over societal standing she's apt to simply ignore any instruction with which she doesn't agree. Need a Little Old-Fashioned: Winifred clings to certain mannerisms such as her style of clothing to mitigate her future shock. No Version of This: Upon transforming Alkahest will pursue whomever or whatever triggered the stress reaction with an inhuman single-mindedness, be they friend or foe. So That's What That Does: An alchemist learns through experimentation! Winifred's sense of inquiry frequently outweighs her sense of caution. Some Form of Electricity: While a prodigy in her own time Winifred has missed out on more than a century of scientific advancements that are now common knowledge. Take That Away: Winifred is without a home, funds or familial connections. She relies on Claremont Academy for the necessities. That's My Secret: Winifred's uncontrollable transformation into Alkahest is triggered by elevated stress, be it anger, fear or other trauma. She has to constantly work to keep her emotions in check. Becky made a little noise as Eve worked over her shoulders that was somewhere between a moan and a pleased yowl, shifting to press herself into the petite Frenchwoman's fingers. It felt good enough that she didn't even protest the idea of eating out at a restaurant. She was self-conscious about eating in public since her possession and even with the whole place to themselves - part of her was probably never going to completely get used to the sorts of things Eve's fortune let her do so casually - there was still the staff to fret over. "Mmh... Yessss-- eh?" Suddenly bringing tattoos into the conversation managed to catch her attention, however. She turned over so that she was holding herself up with her arm, eye to eye with her girlfriend and leaning forward over her lap. Once the initial surprise faded her expression wasn't shocked so much as thoughtful. "...on you or on me?" she asked warily, biting her lower lip reflexively as her imagination supplied possibilities for both. She leaned a little closer, deciding that she wasn't ruling out either one out of hand.

Set had already opened her mouth to make a no doubt compelling argument when Phantom mentioned family. Through their linked arms the heroine could feel the godling's spine go rigid for a split second as her jaw snapped shut. "Of course, I should have thought! Apologies...!" Her brow furrowed, pulling lightly penciled eyebrows together as the redhead hurriedly scanned the area. Quickly spotting a suitable opportunity she pulled Taylor along at a brisk job around the curve of a lemonade stand in the shape of a massive lemon, a straw the size of a lamppost sticking out of the top and desperately needing a touch-up of its paint. Between the stand's bright yellow exterior and the fence that separated it from roasted corn-on-a-stick booth facing in the opposite direction they had a modicum of privacy. While Sekhmet made her way after them with a growl of annoyance, Set checked again to make sure no one was watching them then clapped her hands together. "Very well, then! Blending in, certainly." The godling snapped her fingers in the air theatrically and with a brief crimson flash Taylor's outfit changed once again, even more quickly than her cloak had retreated into the Eye. Her shoes were now simple but sumptuously crafted sandals while her shorts had been replaced with a shendyt in the same style as those the goddesses were wearing. The skirt was a good hand's length shorter on the sides than Set's but the middle piece, white fabric trimmed with a deep royal purple pattern that echoed the design of the glittering jewel around her neck, was longer and thinner, the whole length swaying subtly in the light breeze. Instead of her tank top she now wore a surprisingly flattering twisted bandeau that matched the shendyt and elegant armlets the same colour - albeit polished to a shine - as her wedding band had appeared on both upper arms. A similar loop of metal held back her ponytail and though she couldn't see it herself she'd been given makeup outlining her eyes in the same fashion as the Heliopolians. The taller goddess made a short sound of approval and a beaming Set bounced up and down on her toes, delighted with her work. "There! Disguised!"
