  1. GM "By all the Gods!" exclaimed Lord Crane, holding fire. A few cracks of gunfire whizzed through the air. The last Polar Bear had no time for fear or pain or indeed bleeding. The huge ursine predator ran across ice and rock with surpsing agility and speed, and threw himself at the Black Knight. A little to slowly, or a little too clumsily, it seemed, for it was a swift but nerve wracking side step that would spare the Black Knight a colision. A few more bullets screamed through the air from panicked sailors. Lord Crane screamed "Desist! You will hit him!" and perhaps this order entered frightened skulls and permeated into frightened fingers, for the firing stopped. Perhaps it was not the order but the simple fact that the revolvers only had six shots, and most if not all of said rounds had been expended in a salvo of panic.
  2. So there is one Polar Bear in action, who will charge at Black Knight Charges Black Knight: 1d20+9 15 which will just miss. Round 2: 21 Lord Crane 13 Black Knight, Unharmed 2 HP 10 Sailors [4] 10 Arna 10 Prof Littlefield 1 - Polar Bear [1] Lord Crane, and indeed the Sailors, will hold fire as they risk hitting the Black Knight. Meaning the Black Knight is up again!
  3. Reflex Saves: 2#1d20+6 25 13 for Reflex Saves so DC 22 and 19 Respectively. Tough vs Black Knight: 2#1d20+6 7 15 Not good, the first is injured so thats a 9, and is disabled (killed in this case). The second makes a respectable save and is just bruised (and injured if you wish). Post away.
  4. GM And so they were. Coming in fast and rabid. The enormous creatures pounded their way through the ice and snow at full belt. "Fire!" yelled Lord Crane, with what he assumed was complete authority. It was not authority that pulled the triggers, but fear. Crack crack crack-crack...came the intermittent fire. It must have carried miles in that cold pure air. Lord Crane took more careful aim, fully concentrating, and managed to hit one bear. The Sailors spluttered and fired their weapons, some too fast, a few too slow. But mainly too fast. Ammunition would be spent, chambers would be empty. But one thing for sure, as Mr Crowbolt gritted his teeth and fired all six rounds at the bear of his choosing, he caught one smack in the eye. The great beast threw into a death spasm and stumbled, quite dead, sliding across the ice as an elegant corpse. "Gotcha!" snarled Crowbolt...
  5. Ok. So Lord Crane will fire his weapon: FIres at Polar Bear: 1d20+9 26 which is a DC 19 Tough Save, and the bear gets: Tough vs Bullet: 1d20+6 16 making it injured and bruised (yes, its lethal damage all the way right now). The four sailors will fire with their pea-shooters: Fire at Polar Beats: 4#1d20+2 18 10 19 14 Whish is two hits, and thus two tough saves DC 18 on the other bears: Tough save vs Bullets2: 2#1d20+6 19 7, one is ignored, but there is a lucky hit, the third is disabled, and thus out of the game! Black Knight is up; he is 100' away but may of course prepare an action etc.
  6. Good rolls! So the BK will be the first to spot three lumbering polar bears charging them. With that notice roll being so good, you can add in some narration about them slobbering or looking generally insane. In any case narrate the spot! Lord Crane has some low level tactical skill and actually Knowledge (tactics: 1d20+7 25 makes a great roll, giving the entire team a sufficient bonus to act first. I will therefore fudge the rolls as taklng 10 for all but the Bears who will take 1. 21 Lord Crane 13 Black Knight, Unharmed 2 HP 10 Sailors [4] 10 Arna 10 Prof Littlefield 1 - Polar Bears [3] Post your spot and any commands, orders, tactics you wish to adopt, and we can start with combat. You spot the Bears early; 100' away. For Reference, Polar Bear Stats (From Core Book with minor mods) - or at least the important ones...
  7. Just for reference, BK has 2 HP Could i have a notice, initiative, and untrained (I think?) Knowledge (tactics) roll?
  8. GM The snow was still light, and the Northern lights shone ahead. Visibility was none too good, but neither was it bad. The worst of it was the monochromatic landscape. It was hard to see white on white, especially in the dark. "There!" cried one soldier, who panicked and shot off his revolver in the dark. "Fool! Do that again and I'll shoot you myself!" screamed a livid Lord Crane who seemed more angry than frightened. And yet, the two emotions so oft went hand in hand. An unpleasant marriage. "It was nothing...nothing..." said another much more scared soldier, holding his cold firearm tightly. Arna, for her part, maintained a steely silence, senses alert. "I am not sure those peashooters will work on a bear..." she said. "We usually carried high powered rifles...." Lord Crane confidently pulled out his side arm. Long, slender, and magnificent. "This was crafted by the finest smiths of Walter street. It will surely suffice..." he said. But the point was well made... And then, another roar... Something...or somethings...came bounding through the snow!
  9. Starshot This was a grim situation. "I won't stop you. But others will" he said, in a grim voice to match the situation. "That won't be good for your survival. A company" he almost spat the word "owns this system. And that means you will have to deal with them. By trade or by war. But they will not ignore you" he explained. "They do not, I think, represent the will of the people, who would offer shelter to those in need. And yet the galaxy does not operate by the will of the people alone, as I am sure you realise" he offered. They surely had a grim story to tell themselves. "And there is another consideration. This system here is home to a sentient species; more than one, as it happens. They have not yet left their planets, and should be left alone. Outside interference by others, including you, would be unwise at best.." On this matter, he was more firm.
  10. Starshot Starshot brushed the pilot off a bit too harshly, pushing the tablet away. "The company be damned. This isn't business, ot's politics...no, it's life" he explained. He did not much take to politicians, but at least they were accountable for their morals. Companies, he found, where only accountable to the law and their profits. Both of which could, and often where, wrong. "We can't start another war" he added, giving the Pilot a look. But... "Here may not be a good place" he explained to the Asshui. "There are...complications. Politics. Other considerations" he mumbled, not even sure of what he was saying himself. "The Lor...they run this part of the galaxy" by and large "...might find somewhere better..?"
  11. GM And later... The flat ice, the snow, would not stay flat for ever. For their was a mountain to climb, and not merely because it was there. "A mountain" was perhaps an overstatement. It was true that it was raised, but this would not be a climb, at least for the most part. It would, instead, be a hard slog uphill, over icy rocks. And it was deemed sensible to rest this night. Best to walk over icy rocks in daylight. A solid six hours till dawn, and most of them with the spectacular Northern lights overhead. As a fire was started, and stocks and provisions unloaded from the now-redundant sled, the Black Knight now felt the strain of metal and destiny. Excalibur, or this worlds version, was near. And then, to cut through the still chill air, their was a howl. Dogs? Wolves? No... "Bears!" mumbled Mr. Crowbolt, Esq. And fear swept the camp. A Polar bear was a fierce opponent, let alone more than one. "The wolves been acting crazed here, I s'pose the Bears will too..." he said. He pulled out his pistol, a veteran revolver of copper and brass. "I wish I had something bigger..." he muttered.

  13. No rolls yet, I think! I will presume he is briefed on the details of the politics behind this?
  14. Lord Steam By Vishnu that was a feat of engineering! It took something rather splendid to impress Lord Lockwood when it came to machines, but when a marvel of sufficient splendour did catch his eye, he would become entranced by it. For it was not merely the appeal to his eye, but the thum and buzz of engine sounds, and the feel of the metal beneath his finger tips. Yes indeed, he was impressed by the ship, and he wanted one. It was vexing that his companion was of keen mind, in that the Speaker was not merely of keen mind, but one might suspect vexatiously smarter than he was. This was a disturbing blow, a nagging itch. Best ignored, he concluded. Best ignored, but also he must redouble his efforts to dazzle with wit and charm. And yet he was a diplomat. Outrageous displays would not do. At least not until a man had taken measure of the land he was in. One should not whip out a pack of cards decorated with illustrations of Primitive tribeswoman of far-away lands and suggest a game of Brazilian double-back. At least not straight away. He pondered the Speaker's question further. As he had pondered it for some time. "Most people will want a great deal most of the time" he answered, mulling his own words. "I would wonder what they expect, and I steel myself for what they will demand". Which in his experience were the more pertinent factors in negotiation. But they were all at sea here. Or under it, anyway. He did not wish to go in armed. Or at least, he did not want the negative connotations of being armed. He had taken his walking cane with him. And, to be prudent, he had taken his slim copper tube filled to busting with oxygen. They were underwater, after all. And so, with splendid cane in hand, he gave a deep bow to his hosts and a wave of the hand indicating to the Speaker that they should proceed. "And now begins the task of trying to observe and extract those very things!"
  15. GM And so... Across the ice, under dark skies and falling snow, came the bold expedition. It was boldly led by the bold Lord Crane, in flapping trenchcoat and long flowing grey hair. A veteran of many an expedition, he was confident. He perhaps whipped the huskies a little more hard than was strictly necessary, but he was not a brute. Or at least, there were far worse brutes, and many of them, in the many worlds. Arna had insisted on coming. And with her, Professor Littlefield, a small, almost withered lady of vast academic experience. She said little and saw everything. Her face grim determination. She had a bull head, and it seemed she had needed to have one to plough through the incomplete but very present gender bias in the world of academia. With them, four Sailors, hard and worn. Lead by a Mister Crowbolt, Esq...a naval man, strong as an ox and with the apparent manners of one. All pulled along sleds; for now, by several huskies. And it so happened that Mr. Hale Esq was sat next to Mr. Crowbolt, Esq. Mr. Crowbolt was not a smart man, but he was dedicated, loyal, efficient and experienced. He had taken to grumbling mightily about the cold, Lord Crane, and Professor Littlefield. He spare a little bile for Arna, although he confessed to admiration of her beauty and fancied himself a new tattoo on part of the body that would not be seen in polite society. Mr. Crowbolt did not sound like he much fancied for polite society. Quite the other type, it seemed. "Lord Crane is stuck up his own backside, I reckons. Pays well, but flies round the world on Zepplins, stealing whatever them there gold and silver he can from tombs. And that's not all. Learned himself Voodoo from Africa, so said. Got the shrunken heads of his parents in his pockets, so said. Got himself blessed by some Jap priest, and got his heart replaced by a Bull's thanks to some Russian Shaman..." He babbled on, surely most of it pure nonsense. But truth or rumour, Mr. Crowbolt seemed to know a lot about Lord Crane.
  16. Exposed to radiation by Absurdist. Red Rat Adding 1 PP to skills, 4 Ranks of Pilot; to give Pilot 4 (+10) [Lamentably to all three sheets] Feats: Bumping Equipment up to rank 15 (Spending 10 PP to raise from 5 to 15 PP). 18. The Red Rat "Tea, M'lord?" asked the Rat, through buzzing teeth, giving a courtesy. It wasn't going to wash, of course, but it seemed a suitably absurd witticism to a suitably absurd situation. The man, and presumably his wife (or some such relationship of similar ilk) had surely been controlled by the buzzing box thing. Or perhaps they didn't like intruders. And what was behind the woman? In any case, the threat assessment was clear. Blinking colourful HUD analysis of the situation agreed with her. She dropped the tray, and pulled a gun. She was almost tempted to shoot the vexatious box at her feet, but she needed Trotsky to analyse it. "Goodnight, sweetheart!" she smiled, and fired a knockout dart into the man with the hammer...
  19. GM "It is a brutal weapon then" conceded Lord Crane, almost admiringly. "It was conceived for a purpose, and the road to that purpose matters not, so long as it is trod..." "And it is dangerous" he added, a hint of the bleak in his voice. Before he could contemplate further, there was a crunching sound. The ship had hit ice again. But this time, it was but a few miles from the destination. A moment later...on deck.... "So, we are here!" proclaimed Lord Crane. They were nearly at the mountain now. "Yonder, our prize! The meteor!" Captain Voss grumbled about how his compass and anything magnetic was going crazy. "Yes yes, never mind that" said Crane, waving his hand. "We shall have to make do with the sky and the land as our directions. Let us set off! Huskies, sleds, provisions...you know the drill!" he said boldly, sending a few sailors scurrying off to assemble the mission. This close, Jon could feel the sword tugging at him...at the meteor site...at the meteor...something was in the stone... Excalibur?
  20. GM Lord Crane took it all in, nodding in an attentive way. "Yes, yes. The ancient myths. I happen to believe at least a slice of them are true" he said, without observable deceit. "I am a student of such things. Africa, Hong Kong, India" he said, more airily. "I have been from one end of the Empire to the other and seen much that science cannot explain. And wond'rous art and customs" he said, almost lost in his own musings. "I can believe it would bit my hand off!" he concluded, not daring to venture to touch the sword, or, it seemed, Jon. "For I have noted many myths around such heirlooms and antiquities; that they are built for purpose, or have some intent poured in them? To raise the rightful king, or to depose the wrong one. To build a kingdom, or ruin one. To maintain the law, or engender anarchy!" He paused, scrutinising Jon again. "And what do you say the purpose and intent of your sword is?"

    Ronin

A doodle for possible PC or NPC, someone designed particularly for Bedlam (as opposed to wedged into it!) Possible pic for inspiration Ill note a two things; this character is NOT the Punisher, or a simple vigilante. It is designed to have complex relationships with family, neighbourhood, crime, and the law - whilst remaining a clear protagonist. Ronin Power Level: 8 (180/180 PP) Unspent Power Points:0 Trade-Offs: +4 Attack/-4 DC, +4 Defence/-4 Damage In Brief: Military Vet turned street hero. With a splash of Kung Fu and a dash of 80s Action films. Alternate Identity: Curtis Crane Birthplace: Nancy Street, Bedlam Residence: 22 Nancy Street, Bedlam (off Ash Street) Base of Operations: The Well (Hidden under 22 Nancy Street) Occupation: Odd Job Man, US Army Vet. Affiliations: None Family Yoshie Chiba (Elderly Grandmother), Luther Crane (Alcoholic Father, Incarcerated for murder of Curtis’ mother / his wife), Eleanor Crane (Street Cop Half-Sister), Jack Crane (US Marine Elder Cousin, Medically discharged after bilateral leg amputation). Yoshie, Jack, and Eleanor all live in 22 Nancy Street. Description: Age: 35 (25/12/1982) Apparent Age: 35 Gender:Male Ethnicity: ¼ Asian (Japanese - Maternal Grandmother), ¾ African American Height: 5’8” Weight: 80 Kgs Eyes: Brown Hair: Shaved Curtis Crane is a man of slightly short but strong frame. He has dark skin and a slightly exotic look to him. He usually cuts his hair to military grade shortness, and sports a neat goatee. He had one earing and a few scars on his body (in particular, one on his forehead). He has a US army tattoo on his right arm, and a tattoo of a Samurai on his left. As Ronin, Curtis wears a customised protective vest and carries his “Street Special” shotgun in a large shoulder holster. He also wears his personalised “Bushido” Trench coat, complete with a Katana motif on the back. Inside his trench coat he has a few more concealed weapons. Power Descriptions Whilst Ronin himself has no powers, his “Street Special” weapon has some rather elegant and impressive effects, namely: “Iron Fist” (a straightforward round) “Divine Wind” (a booming shotgun blast that knocks people off their feet) “Dragon’s Breath” (a short burst of blindingly bright fire), “Hornet’s Nest” (fills the air with buzzing shrapnel) and “Ogre’s Breath” (a smouldering smoky shell fills the air with dense smoke). History: Curtis grew up on one of the most deprived streets in Bedlam, Nancy Street. For all its problems, the Nancy Street residents stuck together and the “Nancy Street Crew” would always form to beat back organised crime or street thugs. Ronin came from a troubled household but his saving grace was his Grandmother, who despaired of her daughter and son in law but loved Curtis; teaching him akido and karate from a yound age. Curtis very smart kid. He did well at school, and would have gone far if the school and his home life was better; Aged 16, his good for nothing drug addled Father murdered his Mother. Bitter, angry and impatient to leave Nancy Street, he joined the army. Here, he learned discipline and excelled. After some time in the infantry he turned to engineering and bomb disposal. He became an expert in weapons maintenance, modification, and design. All that came to an end when he was caught by an IED in the Afghanistan. Left with a nice scar and concussion, he decided to leave. He respected his comrades in arms, but he didn’t really know what he was fighting for anymore. Ronin returned to Nancy street and found it in worse shape than ever. Most of the Nancy Street Crew had disbanded (or in a few cases, had been killed), and it was rife with drugs, thugs, and worse. The Police were of little use and sometimes worse than the street thugs, taking bribes, corrupt, and sometimes plain sadistic or racist. Moving into his Grandmothers house, he determined to do something about it: Dismantling the gangs on the streets, organised crime, and the corrupt in power. Naming himself Ronin, with his military, martial, and engineering expertis, he would be the honourable Samurai with no master… Personality & Motivation: Despite his tough upbringing (and Curtis is tough), Ronin has a strict code of honour. He won’t kill, he won’t maim, or torture. He meditates daily, and tries to ensure self-discipline. Thus, whilst he is not a forgiving man, and in some ways merciless, he is not sadistic or violent. He is not motivated by vengeance but by love for his friends, family, and neighbours. Whilst he operates outside the law (to bring down corruption) he actually has immense respect for the law (and its enforcers) when it works properly. Curtis has a selectively cynical attitude. He doesn’t believe the police or the government do much (if anything) to help the poorest or the most vulnerable. He does however believe in his fellow man, his family, his friends, the social worker, the youth worker, and Nancy Street (his home). Whilst he often operates alone, he believes that we are stronger together. He has an interest in Zen and the Shinto religion; for all his “street” credentials, he is a self-educated and philosophical man. Curtis is just as home repairing an automobile of a small businessman, fixing the Youth Centre computer, helping out in the soup kitchen for the homeless, or dropping off an OD’d drug addict to a medical centre. Powers & Tactics: Ronin / Curtis has no powers, but is an intelligent and physically capable man. He has extensive military and combat training and has been Practicing martial arts (mainly Akido and Karate) over twenty years. He has a number of self – designed / self – built paramilitary devices, the prime among them is his converted shotgun, the “Street Special”, a.k.a “Katana”. The Street Special is a rather short, elegant and almost featureless weapon. It has less raw stopping power than a regular shotgun, but is more versatile, elegant, and reliable (and, importantly, non-lethal). Perhaps his greatest strength is his loyalty, honour, and pure will power. This is backed up by the support and respect he has in his neighbourhood. Complications: Bushido: To a greater or lesser extent, Ronin keeps to the Bushido traditions. Acting honourably, fearlessly, and with self-control or restraint. Often this is to his advantage (e.g. the fearless feat) but sometimes not so; for instance, he will struggle to “back down” or “retreat” – he may not start a hopeless fight, but once in one, he won’t run from it either. He would be reluctant to use his weapons against a (single) unarmed opponent (unless that opponent was super powered). Supply and Demand: Ronin doesn’t have any income. He relies on odd jobs (as a mechanic etc) which are cash in hand, the goodwill of Nancy Street, and “salvaging” (which includes taking what he needs from crooks he busts). This might mean he has problems replacing or repairing, or even reloading, his equipment. Brothers in Arms: Usually cynical, Ronin will have big respect for military men (or women). Particularly those in the front line (medics, infantry, etc), veterans, or old-timers. He has less, but still some, respect for commanders etc. He will be inclined to automatically trust and help such individuals (or those that can effectively pretend to have such a background). This attitude is also prevalent towards many super heroes and police – at least ones who have proved themselves as compassionate and honourable. Neighbourhood Watcher: Whilst a source of strength, Ronin also has a duty to protect Nancy Street, and to a lesser extent its neighbourhood and even Bedlam itself. He has a number of friends and family on the street that are dependants and sources of vulnerability (especially as his identity is essentially open). If his reputation is somehow marred, he will (at least transiently) lose his benefit feats. Outlaw(ish): Technically Ronin is a vigilante, wanted by the Police. However, given his reputation and lack of serious crime (e.g. no murder), opinion on this is divided amongst the police force. Some (the corrupt) want his head on a spike (before, figuratively, he wants theirs on one). Some view him with favour, and even covertly support him (like his sister), most take a pragmatic position in between; they should ideally arrest him, but frankly they have bigger fish to fry and if he occasionally brings in a crook, best not to ask too many questions. 22. The Red Rat Bzzzz went her teeth. That didn't feel nice. Maybe a trip to the dentist later. Yes yes, I am sure this device is totally benign and has no nefarious purpose whatsoever she sighed internally. "Asset" indeed. Well she was on asset, she decided, but only to herself. I'm not plugging this into my skull you can bet on that. Let's see if the Professor can handle it... She was not entirely sure that she could. She picked up a serving tray, plastic, with a little bit of silver, and shuffled it underneath the box. Not touching it if I can help it! Buzzing and vibrating, she decided to take it back to the professor and his bear. Served up on a tray like some tea and biscuits. The earpiece wasn't working. Wait, that was the peanuts... A second or two of peanut evacuation later... "Professor, professor, can you read me? I've got a...I've got a something. Box. Buzzing. Buzzy Box something" she explained, hoping the frequency was not jammed or blocked.
  23. The Red Rat Sound control! Thrumming in her head! And not just the computer lodged their. No, this caused for a modicum of caution and a pinch of smarts. She didn't want to fall subject to some bad beat. This time, she found a bag of salted peanuts. Yummy. But no time for snacks! Instead, she gave the bag a few robust taps with the handle of her gun, and stuffed the crushed remains into her ears. The world went dull and muted. Not as good as some ballistic industrial headphones, but better than my fingers! Armed with her aural-nut defences fully in place, she went to the mysterious closet.
