Synapse can make a knowledge (Physical Sciences) Roll. Her skill and INT are enough to broadly follow what the Doctor is saying (and generally agree with her theory). But its complicated stuff - if you want to go further... Ill give a somewhat arbitrary +2 bonus due to the fact you have a journey down to Dover to take your time, and Synapse has Quickness x25 for mental tasks. This is not so much a research thing as following and understanding the data. DC 25 DC 30

GM On the road to Dover... The Car was a regular one, nothing too flashy, not even new, just reliable and medium sized. Not for economy - but for profile. The only remarkable thing about it was the driver. "My butler" she explained. The butler was dressed in a suit and a cap, and had waxy skin, with the odd crackle of electricity and a buzzing voice. "Just the prototype model" she explained, as the automaton drove them efficiently and safely down to Dover. Dr Rost was fidgeting the whole time, but tried to close her eyes and relax - doing so by pressing her fingers to her temples and performing controlled breathing with some generic relaxation mantra. "I am in control, I am calm, I am relaxed, I am in my safe zone, I am in control, I am calm, I am relaxed, I am in my safe zone, I am in control, I am calm, I am relaxed, I am in my safe zone..." For all her nervous energy, she was not talkative, but she was clever. The Ministry had not sent any old buffoon down with her. Her theory, based on the preliminary readings, which she gladly shared, was the energy was not from this dimension. Something was crossing the dimensions, sucking and colliding them for brief moments. "A bridge..." she explained.

This all adds up to me, and looks interesting! APPROVED! -
GM Thurdsay January 2nd, 6:00pm, Midtown... ...the Mall The New Year Sale was in full swing, with shops staying late, selling top top goods at low low prices. Or so the blazing music and slogans would have you believe. The truth may have fell a little short of the hype, but business was good that day. Aside from the regular stores and conveniences, a number of one-off market stalls had set up, selling everything from fountain of youth creams to fat busting skin lotion. After the yuletide indulgences, the same stalls that had been selling cakes, candy, and calories were not trying to pedal miracle weight loss and beauty treatments. A new year, a new you. And, human beings being human beings, that is, believing what it is convenient to believe, were lapping it up. A Mindy, Mandy, and Melanie, a trio of super-glam-fun teenage girls, arms weighed down by shopping bags courtesy of wealthy parents, were all keen to try the next big swindle in order to gain a microscopic advantage in appearance, and a fractional rise in the cruel social ladder of high school...

GM Robert continued to babble almost incoherently. It seemed the prospect of fatherhood, even the very peculiar route to fatherhood that the time agency and the null zone had thrown him, had driven his mind to mania. Even with her superspeed mind, Velocity could only make out one word in three. The rough gist of his flow of thoughts seem to wobble between excitement and concern for her. The procedure was quick, and efficient, and Velocity did indeed feel a tingle, blossoming into a wave of nausea, erupt in her abdomen. "There! The blastocyst is implanted and secure!" said the agent, wiping his brow as another brown out occured in the nullzone dome, and redlight once again flickered. A rumble, louder and deeper drummed through the building and air. "And not a moment to soon..." he added, an injection of fear hitting his voice.

"Perhaps there was nothing to fix?" said Rene. It was not that he was full of doubt, but rather, after centuries, he was confident in any lack of certainty. A paradoxical position. "But I am old, and I am a fool, what would I know?" he said, without mockery. Rene may have had pride, but he didn't need flattery. Again, the centuries of experience had left him playing the part of doddering old fool, almost as the default position. It was best not to be feared. It was best to be under estimated. "Maybe you are trying to break something? But my eyes grow dim and grey, and my hearing dull and void. Alas, my venerable age mutes my senses and my wit!" he sighed.

GM Dover... ...Uncle Bob's Big Bangers Uncle Bob was fat man, of indeterminate age. He was one of those men that seemed to enjoy the expanse of his midriff, as if his adipose tissue infused him with some kind of vital tonic. He bustled about, ate heartily, and grinned widely. And his sausages were indeed on the large and tasty variety. He served them up to Alexander with a big smile. "There you go, my son. A fella like you needs his protein, eh? Big strapping lad like you!" All a sudden, a flash... It was like an explosion, a sudden feeling of light and heat and force. For the briefest of moments, Big Bob and Alex were in the centre of a ghostly explosion, like an echo. And then, it was gone, with just words lilting in Alex's ears. "Build it!" Uncle Bob gulped. "Did...did you just feel something? Or did I eat one two many of my famous blue cheese burgers last night?"

Evasion may indeed be a better choice! I'm just giving an opinion based on the Second Chance Feat for what its worth. It seems to be particularly specific about hazards/attacks requiring a descriptor, rather than type of attack - its example is "Fire blast". But this is one of those grey areas. Second chance vs mind reading or mind control has certainly been used in the books. It would be one of things up for debate which is why I note "probably". My feeling is that all area attack toughness saves is particularly broad.

Second Chance Toughness vs Area attacks would probably be considered too broad a descriptor...

OOC for thread. Synapse is asked by the Ministry of Powers to investigate Ulysses strange affinity to the power of steam, and gets pulled into Earth Victoriana, India! Right, to start off: We have Synapse travelling to Dover. Exaccus, Feel free to narrate whatever you want about how you might be in Dover / The Channel Tunnel, either by chance or by some mysterious conscious or unconscious drive from your patron. Also note: I have left date of this out, but will edit it in. This is complicated due to Synapses involvement with other threads. I am open to suggestion on this front.

GM It was the ever enigmatic Mr. Smith, dressed in his black suit and carrying his extremely large suitcase, powered by his tall, muscular frame, that sent Synapse off. "Dover" The channel tunnel had been shut. On the English side. There was a cover story, of course. Engineering works to ensure safety. All very reassuring. All completely false. Nobody really knew what was going on, but it happened fast. An explosion and then...nothing. No trace of explosives. A flash for one second popped into existence, and then popped straight out again. "From the little information we have, the origin of this may not be from our dimension" explained Smith as he introduced Doctor Rhona Rost. Dr Rost was working for the government, an expert in theoretical physics apparently, and well briefed. She was a nervous, thin, woman with nicotine stained fingers and bad glasses. For all that, she was also a tall, blonde, woman with sculpted Russian cheekbones. She looked like a Supermodel who had stayed up three nights on too much coffee and had thrown all her make up and fancy clothes down the toilet. "Y-Y-Yes yes" she said, adding a nervous stammer to her plethora of qualities. Her voice didn't indicate either a lack of confidence or an abundance of arrogance. "We best get going. Don't want another frazzin' explosion in a tunnel under the sea, do we?" she asked, hopping from one foot to another in perpetual restlessness. Smith's face was, as ever, like unnatural stone. No muscles moved at all. He merely handed Synapse a sealed document. "Only open if you are...displaced..." he said, stoically, before marching off.

Quick scan: 1. Collateral damage probably isn't going to be a valid complication. Its generally considered a "built in" problem of area affect problems. Not wishing to harm innocents may be a complication, but personally I think its so ubiquitous that its not worth putting down. You could possibly expand this by saying that the explosions have an element of poor control about them, doing things like collapsing buildings or bridges and doing structural damage over and above the normal damage - but in an unhelpful way! 2. Again on complications (typical me), its not necessary, but you may want to add meat to what small spaces do. Not to tie you down, but to guide. Shut down his powers due to lack of concentration? Distract him? Make him flee? or just vague angst? To reap HP, you need real problem, not emotional feeling (but the latter is good fun!). 3. A ranged cone effect is odd. This is not a dragons breath. Its like summoning a dragons head at a distance and making it breathe a cone of fire in a direction. Now, that may be what you wanted, but most cone effects that come up tend to be Cone Area, Touch range - in other words, the "pointy tip" of the cone (its origin) is you. 4. As a pure suggestion, I might add the feat: Second Chance (Toughness saves vs explosions), as I imagine he is getting pretty good at handling them! Otherwise, looks good!

Ok just doing a classic stagecoach thing, shifting to the driver. Il throw an untrained Acrobatics / DEX roll in case you need it...1d20+1=20! Its like the wild west!

"I fear the worst is upon us" remarked Rene at the crack of musket shot. "We are beset, and unarmed. Out of the frying pan, and into the fire" he sighed. The carriage was still going strong, despite all shot and intimidation. He was still a youngish man, and whilst no athlete, he was fit enough. Taking courage in hand, he clambered out of the still moving carriage, and started to edge his way towards the driver. "Ride on, ride on! As if the devil was on your tails! For all we know, he is!" he yelled at the poor driver, whilst the wind whisked through his hair. He dearly hoped the bandits could not ride and aim at the same time, but his recent experience of being shot still pained him, and he clung to as much cover as possible. He noted the grunt of pain and blood from the driver. Either they could aim, or they were lucky, he winced.

So0rry missed that! Posted the mind control effect. Take it away y'all!

GM BIg Nelson stiffened briefly and then dropped his weapon with a resounding clang against the wet tarmac of the docks. The night was still cold, the rain still fell, but the perceptive would notice the hint of far-away glazing in Nelson's eyes, oblivious to the disagreeable climate. "Show's over, boys. Drop em..." His thugs were chosen for strength, brutality and loyalty. Not for perceptiveness. The nuances of behaviour washed over them like oblivion. An echo of fallen weapons followed Nelsons Shotgun on the ground.

"Much as I like the countryside, I dislike the road in equal measure" complained Rene. Wheels and road in this age were a juddering, sore business, and his rear end complained. It was better than riding or walking, that could be said. Although he wondered if the free air of the equine canter would not be more invigorating, even if more tiresome for the legs and posterior. "And I warrant the roads are still not safe" he clucked at Father Henri, as he noted the four horsemen. "How very apocalyptic" he muttered "Pardon me, Father, I never was a fan of Biblical words. However, one cannot miss the chance to comment on such poetry" He did not relish the chance for more elaborate flares of magic. Experience had taught him to keep such flashes of power under cover. Both mortal eyes, and the eyes of others, both unwanted, were drawn to such bold extravagance. "Prepare for the worst" he said stiffly to the Father.

I think thats the idea...

"If your attack succeeds, make an opposed roll of your attack’s damage against the defender’s Strength"! Somewhat open to debate, but opposed roll normally means two of em, as far as I know (and the precedent is for grapples, trips, overruns...) What do you think? The static part is for damage saves, a different kettle of fish I think.
