  1. Corbin looked askance at the noose. Tie. Whatever. Then his gaze drifted to the large package in his hands; it clearly wasn't too heavy for him (that would have taken a major effort!), but he was handling it with care, and it was a somewhat awkward size and shape to carry in one hand. Still, he shifted his burden and took hold of the tie. He was trying to figure out how to ask for help from Trevor without ruining his pride, when Eve thanked him for being less formal. "Hey Eve, glad to, uh, be of service." "<You're a lifesaver. I hate wearing ties.>" With that thought, he carefully folded the tie up and tucked it into a pocket before adjusting his grip on the picture. "I figured you'd have told us. Light lunch, you say? I think I could manage to eat." He gave a lopsided grin, before speaking again, and gesturing with his head at his package. "Where should I put this until it's present time? Don't wanna ruin the surprise after I took the time to wrap it. No peeking, mind you!"
  2. "Your aim sucks." Cobalt Templar gave Keres an almost savage grin as the villain totally missed him. When Kimber landed a hit, CT smiled even wider. "Nice work, Galvanic. Time for the one-two knockout punch." As he spoke, Cobalt Templar's body was encased in a swirl of blue fire, until he emerged from the flame as a metallic blue giant, the armor just transparent enough to see the blue flame roiling and rolling just beneath the surface of the shell. "Neat trick, but I've been doing it longer. And with more style." He took a massive step forward and slung one of his mighty fists in a blow that struck amidships on Keres. "And unlike you, I can hit what I aim at."
  3. Right then, it's time for CT to enter the "big time". Free Action: Switch CT's Fires of Judgement Array to his Large form. He's now Large (9ft tall, 10ft reach), Immovable 1, Super-Strength 8, Strength 34, Defense is +6, Toughness still +17. I think that's everything. Move Action: Get up in Keres's business! :x Standard Action: Take a swing at him! 22 should do it. So...COBALT TEMPLAR SMASH! DC 27 Toughness Save.
  4. Carson gave one glance to the straggling (now fleeing) residents of the bar. He sighed and hoped no one was paying close attention. He took a single step forward, and with a flash of light, by the time he finished moving he was clad in his shining armored form, great spear in hand as he faced down the demon. He spoke, and his voice was almost bored. "Yes yes, pain and darkness, bloodshed, evil more powerful than good, your sniveling coward of a boss is totally more powerful than the One I work for, we'll all be crushed, yadda yadda yadda. At this rate I'm going to have to keep track of some of these lines you demons spew out." His left hand, the one not gripping a weapon for the moment, snaps up to point his index and middle fingers at the strange demon, and a pulse of sound flies into its body with incredible accuracy. The vibrations sent through its being might well leave its mind so addled it can barely move. "Maybe you should save yourself some pain and just banish yourself now; I've faced down far worse from your kind, so frankly I'm getting hard to impress. You're pretty much all washed up." There was an undercurrent of frustration, even anger in his voice. It was clear Gabriel was not one to suffer the presence of such beings lightly.
  5. Demons demons everywhere. And not a drop to drink! Anyways. Free Action: Gabriel is now in-costume, and has his spear out. Free Action: Set Array to...Let's make it Paralyze. 8-) Move Action: Get to spear range of the beastie. Standard Action: Ranged Paralyze attack. 32 hits, and that's a crit! If Paralyze can crit, that's a DC 27 Will Save. If it can't, it's DC 22 (looks like it's still 23 on my sheet's DC block, my bad).
  6. "Wait. Now you're telling him he can't even come here and do what this place was supposedly made for, and practice with his powers?" Corbin's face was set in a deep frown now, at the thought of his friend first getting attacked with no warning, then told to basically never come to a place Blake had contributed to directly. "You're telling me with all the magical know-how in this place you guys couldn't rig up some sort of "buffer" or "shield" or something? I mean, yeah, I get it, magic of the Unspeakable One and all that. But you've got like a half-dozen different mages running around, all with different powers, and instead of saying "hold off on practicing until we put up some wards" or something like that, we're jumping right to "Blake you should never show up here again, especially to do anything magical at all"? When Blake's one of the folks who helped set up this place?" The indignation in his voice was clear; Blake might be taking this lying down, but Corbin was still a bit peeved about the injury his friend had taken for what he saw as no real good reason. "I mean, sheesh, at least talk to the other folks who work here before you vote him off the island, you know?"
  7. "Trevor probably put a half-dozen microscopic AC units in the suit if he was worried about the heat." Corbin Hughes strode up the lawn toward his friends and fellow heroes. He stopped a few feet away and frowned. "Uh, wait. We were supposed to wear a suit?" While his dark blue jeans were immaculate, and the black western shirt added a nice flair to his look, Corbin clearly hadn't planned for a semi-formal dress code. His arms shifted the decent-sized package he was holding; it was thoroughly wrapped, but the large, flat shape was likely another piece of artwork from the ring-slinger. He blushed a bit as he looked first at himself, then at Trevor and Mark. "Dang it guys, you're supposed to tell me these things. Now I look like a fashion-less rube. Please tell me someone at least rang the doorbell?" His "misstep" revealed, he seemed eager to at least get inside.
  8. Well, maybe I can do a bit better, and at least one of us goes before the demon? 12? Well, that's irony for you.
  9. Power Descriptions: History: Personality & Motivation: Powers & Tactics: Complications: Secret Identity Squared: Lawrence Jenkins is secretly Shrike, and both are secretly Davis Powell. Project Einherjar could make the connection between Shrike and Davis, but not to Lawrence. Shrike's goal is to keep as few people "in the loop" as possible, but being the bodyguard of a public figure (albeit one who knows his secret and has one of his own) means it can be an awkward balancing act. GM may feel free to give Shrike a Hero Point if he's placed in a situation where his identity is in notable jeopardy of being exposed in one way or another. Responsibility: Job: Davis has a regular job as Mr. Scott's bodyguard, though the hours are fairly flexible. However, he has at least a bit of obligation to help the man who freed him in his nightly crime-fighting activity as well. GM may feel free to give Shrike a Hero Point if these obligations notably interfere with Shrikes solo or team work at some point. Family Man: Davis's family doesn't know he's alive, but he makes it a point to keep track of them as best he can. If at some point they're put in danger, be it by random crime or natural disasters, or the more intentional machinations of the people behind the Project, he may well charge into the situation without thinking. GM may feel free to give him a Hero Point if his family's situation makes him drop everything else and recklessly enter the situation. Wanted Man: Project Einherjar wants their investment back, and they will be ruthless in attempting to reclaim it. Shrike has to work hard to stay below their ever-expanding notice. GM may feel free to give him a Hero Point if the Project injects itself immediately and dangerously into his life, interrupting whatever he may have been going about. 10. "Well, like I said, you have to tailor the approach to fit her, Steve. Without knowing her directly, we can only speak in general terms. Besides, it's better if you add your own touch anyways. She's dating you, not me or Jack. As for explosions, I can understand what you-" Then the bottles started bursting, and Carson slid to his feet with a frown. But before he could concentrate on anything, Jack mentioned brimstone. Gabriel's face became expressionless, but his two companions could feel the sudden tension. Carson shifted his stance slightly and closed his eyes for a moment. As he did, Jack and Steve heard his voice whisper in their ears. "Only you two can hear me. I'm trying to see if there's anything I can hear in this building that might be connected to this. We probably need to encourage the stragglers to head out without causing a panic. Besides, I don't think we could all three run to the men's room and change fast enough. "
  11. Right, um, since we haven't been asked to roll initiative yet, I'm going to switch his array to his Far-Hearing, The Tongues of Men & Angels, Ventriliquism power in his Sonic Control Array He's going to concentrate on picking up voices in the building, especially toward the back of the bar, basement, and any upper floors (basically areas he can't see right now). If that's not kosher just let me know.
  12. "We'd like to start as soon as we can. Since you're on board, the only other hurdle is getting Tarrant's help, which shouldn't be too hard. Hopefully if we can get his help within a month or so, the project can start." He smiled a bit as he relaxed some, the slight tension of the earlier questions all but visibly bleeding off of him. "I mean, it won't be just the permanent staff helping with the construction; there are some discrete contractors the Church knows. Including some people who can set up a dimensional gate that lets them travel to and from Earth and here, once they're given the coordinates. It's not super-cheap, but that's fine. Setting up a new place to help people who need it is worth it to us. So, with that all said...I think the goal would be to finish by autumn. The building should be sturdy enough to hold against winter pretty well. As for the bubble, we'll try to work with what we've got. I'll probably bring a surveyor or two with me when I meet Tarrant, so we can pick the best spot. If we need to expand it a bit, I'll try to pass the word along."
  13. Not SATAN! ...Wait, Gabe can't sense it! Also, tagging.
  14. "What are we here for if not planning? And I'm not saying it's a chess match, but you can't just go in wildly swinging without considering what someone's personality and feelings are like. No two women are exactly the same, so you have to custom-tailor everything. I'm just giving ideas and principles, Steve. It's up to you to think about how to apply them. Even that book I gave you is ultimately the same thing; it's not perfect, it's just one of the more insightful looks at relationships I've read in a long time. The guy who wrote it knows just a little bit more about these things than either Jack or myself, really. As for "not waiting for a holiday", it's called budgeting, Jack. I don't know about you, but I'm not made of money. Besides, what you call "predictable" I call "consistent". The last thing you want is the woman being unsure what you're going to be like any one day of the week." Carson was still pretty calm, but his brow was slightly furrowed. He and Jack had actually been doing okay with the "one-two punch" method, but suddenly something was off. "And you don't know someone cares about you because they get upset at you. That's ridiculous. How they act after they're upset, sure. But fights happen because relationships involve more than one flawed person. It's kind of inevitable that people clash at least occasionally. What's important is how you go about those disagreements, and how you treat each other afterwards. Which, honestly, it sounds like you've got a good start on, Steve."
  15. Carson smiled at Steve's rather poetic description of his feelings. "Jack's right, that's something you should express to her. She deserves to know, one way or another. But the reason I asked what she seemed to enjoy, was because that lets you find ways to express your feelings for her. Caring for someone isn't all big grand gestures; it's lots of little things. You cook for her, you said? Try to experiment there. Find out things she likes. Like, try to find out if there's something she loves to eat, but hasn't had in a while, then fix it for her. Make it a surprise. If she's a private person, taking her out to eat isn't a great idea. You have to adapt. Watching movies...hm. Try shaking up your viewing routine. Try a movie neither of you has seen, see if you like it. Even if you both hate it, that's fine, you can share that. Find out if she likes certain kinds of music. See if she likes a particular author, and buy a book for her birthday or Christmas or something. Basically, try to find a lot of little things to do. Those require less planning, and you can more easily add your personal touch. Maybe try writing notes to her sometimes?" He reached into his coat and pulled out a small, well-worn book. He slid it over the table to Steve. "Take it, I've gotten all I can out of it. There are a few notes and such in there; feel free to pay attention or ignore as they might fit. Don't adhere to that thing like it's your only rules, but it's more useful than you might think. I realize the "l-word" is kind of...heavy...for where it sounds like you are, but the principles apply."
  16. GM Post While one of his compatriots was knocked senseless, and another was growling as he was slammed head-on with blasts from Redbird and Midnight, the "leader" was concentrating on gaining his freedom. Finally, with a rather bestial roar, he flexed and managed to rip himself free of the grasping ghostly hands, his "armor" somewhat in tatters after all that abuse. He floated just above the tangle of ectoplasmit limbs and sneered at Nick. "Pfah! Nice trick, but not good enough!" With that stunning comeback he hefted back with his right arm and lobbed a sphere of volatile orange energy right at Nick, managing to strike the otherworldly hero once more.
  17. "I have a couple questions that are a bit more important." Carson's voice was friendly, and he took a quick sip from the steaming drink that had just arrived. "First, where do you want this whole thing to go? I'm talking emotionally, relationship-wise; do you want to become closer to her, perhaps in the future find some deeper level of connection and commitment? Second, and just as important, what's her personality? You don't need to be super-specific, and definitely names aren't needed. But all women are different form each other, and what works for one doesn't work for another. Insight into what she's like, how she shows affection to you, that's the sort of thing that helps make the advice better."
  18. Both of Carson's eyebrows tried to approach his brow. He'd heard Steve on the phone earlier, but somehow it had more weight in person. He glanced at Jack as the other man asked what they were both probably thinking, though something occurred to him that could be important. "Yeah. I mean, we can probably help you better if we know you're trying to catch her attention for the first time, if you're still in the first few "wooing" steps, or if you're sort of settling in and trying to decide where to go from here. Same principles apply, but a lot of the nuance is different." He was determined that he would bring no conflict to this night. He knew good and well he'd likely disagree with some of what Jack offered as advice. That didn't matter; this meeting was about Steve, so Carson vowed to concentrate on just giving advice and letting Steve make decisions like the grown man he was. For all Steve's personal gloom-and-doom that Carson recalled from a couple of their meetings together, he knew the man had a good heart and a sharp mind, and those were the two biggest hurdles in this.
  19. It wasn't more than a couple of minutes later that Carson walked into the bar, having picked an alley that was large, dark, and empty, and casually walked out of it when no one was looking. Surprisingly easy, and since he didn't try to mug anyone, no one seemed to care. He saw the bar's sign and quickened his pace. He walked inside right after a much larger man, giving him a moment of...well, not stealth, but of not being noticed. That moment was all it took to see that Jack was there as well. He gave a long-suffering sigh, sure this would be an "interesting" evening. He walked to the bar and pulled out a couple of bills, gently setting them on the counter. "Irish coffee if you can, classic mix. That table over there if possible." After securing a good drink for the coming events, Carson made his way over to the table, a wry grin on his face. 'Thank the Lord Lent's over, I'm not sure I'd want to go through this without a bit of alcohol now.' He calmly slid into a seat that put him next to both of the other men, settling down with a relaxed air, eyebrow raised a bit in Jack's direction. "I see it's Group Advice Night. Using all your resources, I suppose? Good to see both of you looking well."
  20. 15 hits! Bound and helpless, remember? So! Toughness DC 27 That's 4 under, so 1 Bruise Initiative Roster: -.)Orange Goon 3 (29): Unconscious, 0 HP 1.)Midnight (23): Unhurt, 3 HP 2.)Orange Goon 1 (20): Unhurt, Bound/Helpless, 0 HP 3.)Redbird (19): Unhurt, 0 HP 4.)Orange Goon 2 (18): 1 Bruise, Bound/Helpless, 0 HP 5.)Nick Cimitiere (14): 1 Bruise, 4 HP 6.)Cobalt Templar (9): 1 Bruise, 4 HP Next up is Goon 1. 21. :hist101: Huzzah! I reckon I hope you have yerself a great day, partner.
  22. Cobalt Templar Initiative: 20. Good job, Corbin. AA: How big is he right now? Keres, that is.
  23. "I am sick and tired of people wanting my ring!" Even as Corbin's form was shrouded in thick blue flames, the grasping hands from Nick managed to get firm grips on all three of the attackers. In fact, all three of the strange glowing thugs were rooted in place, vainly struggling in their bonds. "Lights out, ugly." In the blink of an eye Cobalt Templar was practically in his attacker's face; another blink, and the giant hammer in his hands was impacting said foe's head (and some of his chest, it was a big hammer). The blow gave off a ringing sound that mostly disguised the sound almost like glass shattering as the energy construct around the man faded, or the even less pleasant sound of the man's jaw breaking. The crazed man slumped unconscious in the ghostly hands holding him up. CT himself looked at the rest of the people on the field of battle, his chest heaving a bit. "Seriously, not what I wanted to do today."
  24. Hm. Goon 1 and Goon 3 make the reflex, Good 2 does not. Goon 1 is still totally grappled. 26 is 9 less, so Bound. Goon 2 is also grappled. 29 is 9 less, so Bound. And Goon 3 is grappled. 22 is 13 less, so Bound. So all 3 now have a Defense of 5. And can't do jack Squat. And we all get +4 to attack. Next, it's CT's action! He's kinda mad, that last blast hurt. Move Action: Get next to Goon 3. Free Action: Move his Array to his Strike. Free Action: All-Out Attack 5: Defense is 2, Attack is 17 Power Attack 5: Attack is 12, Strike DC is 32 Toughness Standard Action: Melee Attack! Eek, talk about skin of your teeth, auto-miss would be no fun. So, DC 32 Toughness Save from OG 3. 16 is 16 less than the DC. 15 less is the "Unconscious" mark. These guys are the appetizer, so....Orange Goon 3 goes down! That means it's Midnight's turn! 25. GM Post The orange-clad attacker suddenly moved, blazing through the air as he moved directly at Midnight. As he got closer, it was clear there was a madness in his eyes, one born not just of greed. He was all but foaming at the mouth, and his eyes seemed slightly unfocused. It was almost like there was something else driving him... "First I'm gonna kill you! Then I'm gonna take your hat! Then that pretty bike! Then, who knows! Ha, it's a nice hat, and now it's mine!" His left fist roared forward in a punch that wasn't subtle, but was so fast Midnight couldn't quite avoid it. Hopefully he could at least roll with the punch...
