Gabriel came walking up the street, apparently fighting the urge to glance behind himself at the newly-assigned guard force. Of course, they insisted they had "just happened" to all "spontaneously decide" to stick with him. He'd sighed and resigned himself to the soldier being stuck with him. Tarquin seemed the sort who did nothing by half-measures, as the bruises on his ribs attested. He spotted Push and gave the hammer-wielding hero a nod as he ascended the steps himself. "Any idea what this may be about? I'm getting mixed reactions around town, and all sorts of odd rumbles. Not sure I like not knowing what's going on."

For his part, Gabriel had realized simply rolling on the ground was insufficient to deal with the likes of this hellfire. It was acting more like napalm, or even white phosphorus; he could feel it eating away at his coat, trying to get to his skin. With a wordless cry of rage and pain, he tore the heavy leather coat from his body and tossed it several feet away. His gloves and mask quickly followed, as well as his shirt. Thankfully, his pants and shoes were untouched. His skin had avoided direct contact with the cursed flames, but the parts of his face left exposed by his mask resembled a severe sunburn, and a good deal of his torso had blisters blooming, on top of the existing bruises, slashes, and smaller burns. He stood there, panting, as he watched the outfit he'd had so many adventures in turn to defiled ash. It was silly, but he thought he felt a tear slide across his face as he sank to his knees. His voice was hoarse as he spoke. "Yeah. Ow. I can, but right now just about everything hurts. I need help, and it's gonna hurt like the dickens when I start flying. Which I'm going to have to do at top speed, what with the 'no mask' thing." -

The demons cried out as one when Freedom Angel burst onto the scene. Their voices carried a mix of hatred and fear, in roughly equal measure. Almost immediately, the two "brutes" launched themselves at the servant of the Almighty, their claws whistling through the air. Their movements were fairly slow and clumsy, though. One of the demons manipulating hellfire turned his attention on Heyzel as well, building up a blast to try and burn away his beautiful white wings. Meanwhile, the other two focused on Gabriel, one peppering him with small, quick bursts of fire, while the other faded partly from view, becoming a bright shimmer in the air that occasionally threw larger flames at the hero in white. For his part, Gabriel couldn't spare much time to greet his angelic friend. He did manage a short sentence before he had to concentrate fully on the fight. "Well, that's a handy answer to prayer if I ever saw one, buddy! Let's take these schlubs down!" With that, he applied himself to the fray with renewed vigor. The warehouse rang and trembled with the sounds of his various attacks, as slowly the two holy men wore down their opponents. Gabriel himself dueled mightily with the two infernalists, finally downing the first with a barrage of sonic strikes, then the other with a combination of his defense-weakening attack and an over-charged sonic blast. He stood there, panting, bleeding, but smiling. "Heh. Thanks for the assist. Was getting a bit tight there, I have to admit. Not sure how these guys ended up-AAAGGGH!" Out of nowhere, Gabriel was all but bathed in horrible fire and brimstone. It washed over his coat, his hood, nearly his whole body it seemed. He dropped to the floor, rolling around, trying to put out the fire and having little success. In a far corner, illuminated now by the hellfire glowing on his hands, yet another "spellcaster" demon stood, cackling. He turned to face Heyzel, pointing both hands at him. "Now, servant of the pathetic one in Heaven, taste the fires of our Master!" -
When Indira blinked and showed pure black eyes, Corbin couldn't help but tense up, his ring-bearing hand reflexively raising up in a slightly defensive posture. He corrected himself automatically, a tiny hint of shame in his eyes. 'Stupid stupid stupid! She's not an enemy, damn it! Black eyes don't mean Terminus all the time, you big oaf!' He finished berating himself as she described what she'd lost. He nodded as she spoke. "Sounds pretty straightforward. We go in, bust up these goons with guns, and head back out. Sounds simple. What do you think, Eve? Thirty minutes to find them, five to clean them up?" He seemed very casual for a man about to face a paramilitary group who was clearly well-armed by average Earth standards.

Corbin can't help but give Trevor a grin as he gave a fist-bump to his friend. He had a pretty good idea of what might have happened, but his historian's instincts told him to wait until he can get the story from the source. Unfortunately, weariness overrode his inquisitiveness as he stretched a bit, a yawn splitting his face. His right arm rested around Quo-Dis, who thankfully wasn't squeezing his tender skin too tightly. He glanced at the others, a sheepish expression on his face. "As much as I want to hear this story, I'm plum tired." He gives Hope a small smile and a nod. "Tell you what. We'll swap stories tomorrow, after everyone's had some rest. Don't worry about giving us a lift, I think we can make our own way." By "us", he clearly meant himself and Quo-Dis. He sent her a quick thought over their link. --Is my house fine by you?--- 24 replies

Corbin walked outside with the others, a slight frown lingering on his face from the goings-on inside. He glanced around, realizing at about the same time the others did that they had not easy transport home. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for him, but he was bone tired right now. He felt like he could sleep for a couple of days right now. He wasn't sure how well he'd be able to keep a construct for their whole group up, or for how long. Of course, that's when Hope showed up, seemingly copying his abilities. He blinked owlishly, not quite comprehending the situation at first. He looked down at his ring, and conjured a bit of fire from it, as if to test that it was really still there, and still working. Then he looked back at Hope, before giving the group a sheepish look. "Heh. Um. Right. Did I forget to mention I might have given the Midnight we saw on Erde a tip on where to find some help? And by "help", I mean "that world's version of my ring"? Cause...uh. Yeah." He turned back to Hope, giving her an embarrassed grin. "So...Am I on the money about that?"- 24 replies

Corbin displayed excellent table manners, especially considering he'd ordered more than even Sharl! Then again, he was probably bigger than any of his comrades, and twice as big as Eve! Still, he politely answered every question he was presented with, expounding on things where he felt it was appropriate. Despite his intimidating size, he had a friendly, open manner about him that ought to put most anyone at ease. Mr. Singh's almost suspicious attitude didn't faze him at all. --I know it's not gracious of me, but I almost want to laugh at Mr. Singh's whole "I'm an intimidating figure" mannerisms. Or am I just jaded after what happened at the beginning of summer break?-- He bid the parents farewell as they left, then turned to give Indira his attention as she spoke. He'd just polished off dessert and was currently letting things settle a bit in his stomach. He raised an eyebrow at her request, but didn't seem perturbed. "Like Sharl and Eve said, we'll help. Just what are you-Wait." Her words clicked fully in his mind, as did Sharl's, and his eyes widened in a fair bit of surprise. "You're...not from Earth? Oh. Huh. That...might explain why you're considering Claremont?"

Warehouse, Southside, Freedom City Tuesday, July 15, Evening Carson Keefe, currently going by his hero name "Gabriel" was having a day that was in no way good. Just the opposite, really; it was more than a bit of a bad day. It had started off well enough, with the day itself going smoothly. His summer schedule was pretty loose, and he'd done most of what he needed to do for the season already. Made hero work easier. Even his earlier patrols had gone well; three muggings stopped without violence! Plus he had a chance to give a pep talk to a kid who he suspected had been contemplating a rather dire way of escaping bad circumstances; he'd left that talk feeling relieved, with the teenager looking refreshed and hopeful. So clearly he'd have to end the day fighting a pack of demons. "I'm getting sick and tired of fighting demons!" He exclaimed this while blasting a fairly brutish example at point-blank range, sending it crashing limply into a nearby wall. His work wasn't done, as he had to fire off a sound burst that left the other five reeling. That he'd originally stumbled on an even dozen in the "pack", all of them hiding in this abandoned warehouse and planning how to terrorize innocent lives was immaterial. No matter how many he'd taken down, there were still some left. Unfortunately, even his formidable powers weren't quite enough; he was visibly exhausted, and several moderate wounds were slowing him down more. "Seriously, your ugly mugs keep popping up! You and yours, I swear! Why can't you just! Stay! In! HELL!" The brute he'd just blasted had been trying to sneak up on him, but it took a blast center mass and fell down for good this time. Gabriel stood there, bloodstained and panting, giving the remaining 5 (2 "brutes" and 3 that looked like they'd be more at home working foul magics) a "come hither" gesture. "Come on, boyos. We'll bring the house down yet!"

Corin had spent a couple of minutes gingerly leaning against a wall in the hallway as they chatted. Lady Liberty had kindly healed his burns, but he was still tender, even with the conjured shirt. He took part in the quiet conversation as everyone compared their interrogations, but seemed rather exhausted, like all of them were. Add to that his distraction at the lack of Quo-Dis's presence, and he wasn't quite as "chatty" as he normally was. When Mark and his mother finally appeared, he straightened up and stepped forward a bit, stopping at Captain Thunder's presence and words. He frowned as he noticed Mark's attitude and reaction to the man. He wasn't sure he exactly liked how the man worded things himself. 'How is it going to take them time to figure things out? We told them what happened! Gah. Is this what it's like, always working with these guys?' Then he noticed Mark and his mom walking off. He took a single step toward his friend, sincerity lacing his expression (which was rather clear after he'd dismissed his mask) and voice. "Okay. We'll see you tomorrow. If you guys need anything, at all, call me. Okay? Doesn't matter what it is."- 24 replies

"Every city and country has its own unique...flavor, I suppose you could say. Whether they're only 10 years old, or 1000, every city has a story..." Corbin stopped and shook his head with a rueful chuckle. "Sorry. That's the aspiring historian in me peaking through." Whether he realized the irony of being a teenager who was built like an NFL linebacker, but was looking to be a historian, he didn't reveal. When they arrived at the restaurant, Corbin gave Mrs. Singh a warm greeting as well before seating himself. "Oh, um. I thought you guys would want to stick around, but whatever works. Not like you can't coordinate and communicate or anything. The privacy is nice, though." He lapsed into silence while he perused the menu. He started racking up a mental order, sampling a fair variety, but angling more for the milder foods. He wasn't a wimp or anything, but he'd rather avoid super-spicy foods while doing international travel.

Compiled, formatted, and filled out (for stuff like Toughness)!
-
So, with 8pp left, time for one of the two "thematic upgrades" he's getting: holy armor! Device 1 (5pp Container) ("Holy Armor") [4pp] Enhanced Feat 1 (Quick Change) [1pp] Protection 4 [4pp] That gets his Toughness to caps and lets him swap it out for normal clothes in the blink of an eye! There's still 4pp left...but it's not quite enough to get him that Spear that I'm considering. So, instead, I shall hold onto those points and wait! I'll compile everything in a separate post tomorrow night, and hopefully get it all formatted and ready to submit!

Corbin let go of his lovely lover lady only reluctantly. He sent her a silent reassurance that he'd explain everything, the good and the bad, as soon as he could. He gave her one more superhuman hug before trudging off with Lady Liberty. On the plus side, the "sunburn" had finally stopped stinging. The interview had been a bit of an emotional roller coaster, as Corbin had to essentially relive the last four days of time. Some of it was merely interesting, such as the glimpse at the alternate reality where everyone was obsessed with the 1970's. The tale of the future carried mixed emotions for the boy, with the thought of his death, but also of a heroic daughter who carried on his legacy. His voice was quiet as he described the horrors of Erde, small that their glimpse had been. Finally, he described how eerie that night had been on EZ01. How he'd felt the surge of adrenaline as they fought through scores of Omegadrones, their team working together to destroy the Soldiers of Entropy. The strangely anticlimactic death of Physician Friendly, something he didn't so much as frown about. But then he couldn't help but shed a few tears as Lady Liberty handed him a couple of tissues as he described seeing a twisted version of the girl he loved. Part of him didn't want to talk about it, but he knew witholding information would be worse than just talking about it. Besides, Lady Liberty seemed like the sort to keep things in confidence. She waited patiently as he haltingly described the fight with the group of twisted loved ones. Then a strange fire came to his eyes as he began to describe that final defiance against the Lord of the Terminus. How Red Falcon had given his life to give them a few precious minutes of stable ground. How he and Wander had hacked away at the Lord of the Terminus while Sage drew enemy fire and Edge burned Omegadrones from the sky. How Midnight had dealt that final terrible blow that gave trillions of destroyed worlds a tiny measure of justice. His eyes were hard, defiant even, as he asserted to the gentle Lady that they weren't lying, it wasn't made up, and how Rick Lucas was, in the end, still a hero. "No offense ma'am, but are we done? I barely got to talk to my girlfriend, my parents are probably worried sick, my friends and I are tired, and...And Mark just lost his dad. I know this is a big deal, but he and his mother should get some time. The last thing he needs is hours of interviews or whatever. I mean, yeah, we're "just kids", but does this sound like the sort of thing we'd just make up?"- 24 replies

Corbin quirked an eyebrow at the man's grip, but his grin didn't fade. "It's an honor, Mr. Singh." He turned to Indira and offered her a smile, and a handshake when she and Eve finished their own greeting. "Indira, a pleasure. As for being hungry..." The growl that rang out might have been mistaken for a large dog, if it hadn't obviously come from the large teen's stomach. His face reddened considerably. "Uh...sorry. Yeah, they didn't have much on the flight, food-wise. I tend to have a big appetite, I'm warning you folks now."

Gabriel gave the TV host a long, searching look, before nodding once. He glanced around and walked over towards Siobhan. As he walked, she heard him whisper in her ear from across the room. "Been thinking. A little birdie suggested we try slightly different tactics. We might be talking too much. I'm sure it's a shock to you it could happen to either of us. But it makes sense. Maybe we should do a one-two-punch sort of thing? I open it up, you button the scene? " He reached the site of her and the crew, hands clasped behind his back, a friendly smile on his face. "Gentlemen. Hope we're not giving you too much trouble out there, flashing our powers or whatnot."

Corbin rolled his shoulders a couple of times as they walked through the airport; first class or no, he'd still felt cramped in those seats. At least he had fresh clothes by this point. He glanced around, taking in what sliver of the sites he could as they walked through the Mumbai airport. It was warm, but thankfully such things didn't bother him very often these days. He raised an eyebrow as he saw the individuals they were supposed to meet, and smiled a bit as Sharl enthusiastically greeted them. He let his companions greet them first before taking a step forward and holding out his hand, a soft, friendly smile on his face. "Hello. Nice to meet you folks. Name's Corbin."

Corbin had trailed behind the others a bit, glancing back to make sure crowds weren't forming before they were inside, ushered away from prying, questioning eyes. He wasn't really in the mood to deal with the press right now. Thankfully, the presence of Captain Thunder meant they were quickly brought to a relatively private area. He gave a sad smile as he saw Martha Lucas and Travis Hunter alive and well; losses or no, they still had some things to cling to in life. He barely spared his teammates a glance as he saw Quo-Dis; he waited just long enough to let Oliver get handed off to Erin... Before there was a trail of fire on the ground and he had suddenly enveloped Quo-Dis in a bone-crushing hug. He was crying tears of relief and joy as he kissed her long and hard on the mouth, before burying his face in her shoulder. His emotions, and fragments of his memories of the last couple of days, surged through their renewed mind-link. He finally managed a halfway-coherent thought, after over a minute of just clutching tightly to her. -I didn't know if I'd ever see you again. There was fire everywhere, terrible dark fire. And for the last couple of days, I've been fighting monsters.- He drew back a bit to look her in the face...And had to clench down the terror in his heart as, for one brief moment, he saw a version of her with dead skin and black eyes, leering at him while dark fire danced on her hands. He clenched his eyes shut and held her closer again. -They tried to use your face against me. It almost worked. I'm so sorry...-- 24 replies

First up, his abilities. I'm just going to go through and build things, and hope I have the right # of points at the end. That's what this thread is for, anyways. Current: I have some extra points, and quite frankly, I think poor Gabe needs a bit more Strength. His Con will stay where it is; as nice as lots of Con is, he's not a beefy character. But 16 sits right in my mind for a guy who's a.)in good shape and b.)has been beat up enough he's toughened up a bit naturally. So.. Next, Combat. This one's getting redone a bit more, but current stats first. I think I'd feel alright dropping his melee/base attack to 8. That's someone's who's decent at hitting folks up close, which fits with his background of a bit of self-defense training, a few schoolyard scuffles, general physical fitness, and powers that, early on, required him to touch things. As for defense, I'm thinking a similar thing. 8 represents a good foundation in general ability to not get touched, and having lots of defense from "not being in the same place" is pretty handy. So... So, that's a net savings. On to saving throws. Current. So, Toughness will be tweaked a bit as I move forward, but the focus here is my Exotic Saves. He's decent at moving around stuff and not falling over if he gets hit with an attack on his body, but his mental resolve is outstanding. On to skills. Current. Now, one thing I like about this system is it makes it easy to spend a few skill points for fluff. Skills are so cheap, after all! But frankly, I think I got carried away. Now, his 4 big Interaction skills, I think I'll leave. Besides, he's got Skill Mastery and everything! Knowledge Arcane Lore should stay, since he's run into enough nasty stuff like that that it makes sense; between his background, and the same reasoning as Arcane, Theo/Philosophy makes sense. Pop culture...is out. Streetwise...hm. It doesn't feel like it fits. Gabriel has a feel for the "pulse" of things only via how he interacts with people (via Interaction skills). If nothing else, it seems like a weakness he'd have; sure he can talk to people and find things out, but by default he's not great at it. I might add it back in, but it's out. Notice stays, and will possibly get boosted. Performs are reduced to Acting and Wind Instruments; Oratory and Singing are either under acting, or could be bundled with Beginner's luck (since his Charisma is stupid high, well...). Sense Motive stays, and may well also be boosted. Sleight of Hand goes away, again folded into acting, fluff-wise. On the flip side, I think Acrobatics makes sense, as much time as he spends in the air. That's the only skill I can think of putting in, though. So... Next up, Feats. this is where things will really get moved around. Current. Lot of stuff there. And in talking in chat, and other considerations, I know a few things getting dropped. Attractive just doesn't fit, Connected can always be temporarily bought with a hero point, Contacts doesn't quite fit. Equipment will go away due to my decision to go with a device or two, plus maybe some power tweaks. Quick Change...I'll leave for now, but that might go away too. Let's play with this a bit... Not bad. But time to do some quick math, to see what I've got left for Powers. Abilities (32) + Combat (32) + Saving Throws (24) + Skills (24) + Feats (20) + Powers () - Drawbacks (0) = 132/201 Power Points. So, 69 left. That's actually more than what I've currently spent on powers, which is good, since I'll need some PP for stuff like his Devices and such. Though, I have a feeling his "cooler" item will have to wait. So, with that said, on to powers! Current: I think I'll work out my Devices in a separate post. Here I'll concentrate on the powers Gabriel himself brings into play. After some suggestions from here, I have some ideas for how to keep his powers costing halfway-decent. Current tally: Abilities (32) + Combat (32) + Saving Throws (24) + Skills (24) + Feats (20) + Powers (61) - Drawbacks (0) = 193/201 Power Points. 8 Power Points left.
-
Right, that worked out pretty well. On to improving Gabriel. This is actually a much more minor rebuild, simply because he's mostly where I want him to be, and there's fewer PP I need to catch up with. Still, I'm going to do this one bottom-to-top as well. He has 201 points to spend, and is (theoretically) PL 13. First, his existing stat sheet:

Corbin was relieved as Trevor came through. He tensed up as the portal closed, and his tension rose a bit, until finally his reality-bending friend appeared in a flash of light. But something was still wrong; Rick Lucas wasn't there. And then Mark confirmed Corbin's fear. Rick Lucas would not be coming back. Brave face or no, the not-quite-a-giant youth knew his friend likely needed comfort; one couldn't just brush off losing your father forever. Corbin wasn't a counselor, but he knew there was at least one thing he could do. Moments after Omega's armor clattered to their feet, Corbin took a single step over and gave Mark a huge bear hug. Cobalt Templar, for all his bulk, was still a mortal. So when a dark god died just a couple feet away, he couldn't help but be thrown a few yards back, his upper body armor blasted away, his skin red like a bad sunburn. For several moments, he lay on the ground, utterly dazed. When he stood up, there was a grin on his face. He'd celebrate in full later, but he'd helped kill the next best thing to the Devil himself! He dashed towards the portal, pausing for a moment to give Edge and his father a serious look. "See you two in just a minute, alright?" With that, he flung himself through the portal, arriving on the doorstep of the Freedom League with a near-hysterical chuckle on his lips. He glanced down at his attire; while his bare chest would turn heads, his legs were sufficiently covered. He spared a thought to give himself a mask again; it didn't sting much, but his torso was smarting enough he didn't feel like putting any more on. He glanced towards Erin and Eve.... And immediately glanced away, a blush rising on his burned face. He coughed and waved a hand in her direction. A slightly looser version of her normal outfit appeared on her frame, making her more than decent for public exposure, and helping preserve everyone's dignity. "Uh, right. You'll want to head back to your room soonish, but I can keep that going for a while. Just...don't get too far away from me. Can't keep it up over half the city or anything like that." He turned back to the portal, worry creasing his face as he waited for the rest of the team.- 60 replies

Cobalt Templar gave a vicious grin as he saw Wander weather the attacks of thousands of Omegadrones. He grit his teeth in impotent anger as Red Falcon gave his life to save this not-quite-lifeless world. He closed his eyes for a moment as Sage worked to keep Wander alive, as Edge burned Omegadrones from the skies, and as he knew Midnight was out there lining up a shot. This was no time to sit back and simply throw Wander swords of energy. Especially not when she rent the armor of the terrible Lord of the Terminus, and Corbin heard the thing that had once been a wonderful being cry out in genuine fear and pain. What could he do, but strike back at that which had taken so much, destroyed so much, crushed so much? So that's exactly what he did. His body shining even brighter with bright blue fire, empowered by a ring forged centuries ago to protect the innocent from the darkness, Cobalt Templar charged through the air, leaving a bright tail of flames behind himself. As he flew, a flippant gesture from his left hand kept the sword in Wander's hand strong, giving her that extra little bit of help for a few more precious seconds. Meanwhile, in his right hand, his own weapon was coalescing. In the blink of an eye, he held a majestic sword of fire, fire so concentrated it burned almost white. He raised the burning blade high, and brought it down in a reckless blow against the Father of Destruction. He let out a wordless cry of rage, one that contained all his anger, his hatred, his grief, his hope, everything all at once, all as he struck back against the Darkness.- 60 replies

Graduation Day: There Won't Be A Next Time (OOC)
KnightDisciple replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in Archives
I just realized. His armor's gone. Which means he's lost his impervious toughness. Which means Cobalt Templar can help hurt him. Move Action: Move up next to Wander, aka in melee range of Omega. Free Action: Extraordinary Effort. In this case, it's to get 2 different things. First off, I will stunt a Feat for one round: Power Attack, in this case. Secondly, I will take the Extra Effort to get a second Standard Action. All-Out Attack 2: Defense becomes +3, Attack becomes 19 (9+2+3+5) Power Attack 5: Attack becomes 14, Damage DC becomes 29 (15base+9rank+5PA) Standard Action: Attack Omega with his Strike! 22 isn't as dramatic of a result as I would have liked. That is an insufficient number, so Hero Point reroll! 32 does it, though. Hm, I should really consider throwing improved crit on things one of these days. That will make it a Toughness Save DC 29. Extra Effort Standard Action: Aid Attack for Wander, giving her +2 Defense. 16 is greater than 10, so Aid goes through. So, 1 HP spent for reroll, and another will be spent next round to keep him from being Exhausted. So 2 spent, effectively. -

When the fires of entropy descended from on high, Corbin flinched; he couldn't help but do so at a reminder of the very force that had taken everything he'd loved away. But then an army of Omegadrones had started to pour out. 'Well, there's more of them, but I guess this isn't-' Then the Knight of Entropy strode out, and he went very still. Some part of him, buried in the back of his mind, said he should be afraid. Cobalt Templar decided that he should ignore that part of himself, at least for a little while. "No more being afraid." Suddenly, he was all but shining with energy, his armor restored, his helmet secure on his head, his cape flapping in the breeze. He took two steps forward, drew his right arm back as if to throw something, then heaved forward. Just before his hand started moving, something blue manifested in it, but its form was blurred as it whizzed through the air. "Wander! Heads up! Present on the way!" When the beautiful powerhouse of Young Freedom caught Cobalt Templar's "present", she saw it was a sword, a fine one. Corbin had compacted a lot of energy into it, enough that it practically shone in its own right. Meanwhile, Corbin raised his voice against Omega. "كنت قاعدة الشرير! Specie tua sicut animalia spurca!
