"I can hear you without any trouble right now, Grim. For the record, I was never in the Boy Scouts, and I'm terrible at tying knots that don't involve shoelaces." His eyes are still closed, his arms still crossed, and he's still doing that "floating serenely in mid-air" thing, but Gabriel's mouth is upticked very slightly in a smile. It grows serious once more. "That said, I'd rather that any use of force be a fall-back plan. I don't intend to lie to these people. I have the ability but not the inclination. I just want to help them leave this twisted place. That said, I won't give them detailed information or numbers right away." With that said, he uncrossed his arms and turned to look at the others. "I'm about to fly over to a point about a mile away from them, as open of an area as possible, and attempt contact. I move fast but I can slow down for my visible backup. I want to try and get started, these negotiations could take a while." Barring objections, he'd begin flying to a point about a mile out from the voices that was, as best as he could figure, a wide-open plain or something similar.

Gabriel had been having a jam session with a few of the Brothers in the Monastery when Stesah called. Everyone stopped when the Irish hero's face went from joyous to expressionless. The sudden straightening of his posture only reinforced the seriousness. "I'm on my way, airborne in seconds." He was speeding down the halls of the great stone structure, whizzing by monks, villagers, and children as they went about classes, worship, and work of various kinds, his outfit suddenly gleaming silver and white right after he rounded a corner. As soon as he was outside of the monastery walls, he accelerated further, his powers keeping the sonic boom from shattering glass, or really doing more than letting a low, rumbling *crack* sound out across the peaceful area that Fleur de Joie had terraformed over the years. "ETA is just a few moments. Will attempt communication when I get there."

Judex nodded sagely as Ami opined about the nature of Bedlam City, its smells (both physical and metaphysical), and the efforts to hide (or not hide) such smells and imperfections. She seemed a bright young girl. A bit odd, though. Still hadn't told him her name! He stepped carefully in her wake, thankful that much of the worst of this ought to disappear when the time came. When they stopped at the junction, he closed his eyes for a moment, just trying to see if his other senses could pick something up. In what some might call a miracle and he would simply call providence, he did, in fact, hear something. Opening his eyes with a smile and a silent prayer, Judex reached over and softly tapped Ami on the shoulder. Once he had her attention, he'd tap his ear a couple of times, and then pointed down the side tunnel he'd heard the voice from. Without waiting for much of a reply, he set off down the tunnel with a mix of determination and caution.

Going to be traveling for a few days. I'll be around during the day tomorrow, but after that, I'll be sparse to not around until Wednesday. At most I might toss in an OOC post or two, that sort of thing.

Alright, so, he's out in the hallway? The officer is mildly weirded, but has also Seen Things. He may be offering coffee to the dog. SO MANY THINGS. -
Judex squinted his eyes in the dark a bit, but didn't seem to complain over-much. He just carefully scanned the space about them, taking in what details he could with his night vision (such as it was), and the light from the girl's phone. He stepped softly along the floor, almost testing each step. It wasn't quite cat-like, but at the least, one might compare it to a cautious mountain goat. Especially with the beard. When she dug up the hole, he snorted briefly, as if to clear the smell from his nose, but otherwise made no immediate comments. Instead, he looked around again at the space around them, and then the hole. As the pink-suited girl delved in, he chuckled, then followed. "Curioser and curioser. Perhaps he's neither bear nor squirrel, but rabbit instead? One wonders how deep the rabbit hole goes...."

Your Notice check tells you no shenanigans happened in the hall beyond the owners realizing "OMG BREAK-IN AAAAAHHHHH" and quickly moving to a different part of the house. There are a lot of odd marks about. Most of them are on the desk, though. Between Grim and Reagent, they'll notice the marks look an awful lot like ones a strong metal blade might make in wood (or wood-like material, as the case may be). -
GM The group was waved through after a few moments checking their badges, and no protests were made as Woodsman drifted a bit from the group, as most of the focus is either outside, or on the office room. That said, he wouldn't find much out of place. The only real signs outside of the office seemed to indicate panicked movement away from that room; perhaps the owners of the home quickly fleeing once the damage was discovered? The CSI techs inside the office paused as the teenagers moved in, but once again those badges seemed almost like magic passes. They glanced at each other, then shrugged. "We won't turn down help from heroes. We've taken our initial round of photos; lots of secondary pieces of damage around the room. Nothing structural to the house; the window's the worst damage there. Everything's fixable. Offhand, whoever did this wanted the paper files there, and the stuff on the laptop. We found signs of someone shoving one of those super-tough USB drives into a port on the computer, then yanking it out; the port's busted. Computer itself works, though it's not acting normal. We're not digital forensics, so we've tried to leave it alone for the most part." The other tech, a bit older and with a voice that suggested maybe one too many smoke breaks, spoke up. "Probably obvious, kids, but try to be careful. That glass is sharp, and we're still working on tagging and cataloging everything." He seemed not to care about the dogs that were apparently not quite there. Meanwhile, at the door to the house, the big burly officer standing watch there looked down at the dog. Who was smiling up at him. Kept looking. Dog kept smiling. He sighed, then shrugged. "Hn. 'Sup?"

Sun Walker steps forward slightly, and offers a bow to Gear and Sitara each. His face bears a gentle smile, the strange ape-man having found peace easily enough in the midst of this strange situation. "Greetings to both of you. It is my inestimable pleasure to make your friendly acquaintance, Greasy Gear, Traveller. I am known as Sun Walker, at least as I stand before you now. I may have another name, but you will forgive my caution in these complicated days of today if I do not offer it too quickly to any I meet. Still, it is good we have met here. This robot...I am not familiar with the origins, but the design is impressive. Still....these rumors, this violence. It's worrisome. I would like to help however I can."

I'd say go ahead and make any/all rolls you'd like to use now, and I/we can weave them in where it fits. We're gonna be doing this a couple of times, and I do promise you no combat. At this specific location. -
"The cops, or worse. Who knows what sorts of odd characters panicky local officials might dredge up if the police can't take down this 'threat' quickly enough, hm hm hm?" His expression was pretty serious, though. If nothing else, this Judex was taking Ami seriously. "I think the real-er question might even be...was this furry person kidnapping the woman...or something else?" Now there was a thought to chew on as they made their way through the alley. When the came to the door, he helped Ami ease it open before following her inside. His steps were quiet and careful, making minimum noise. When he spoke, it was a whisper. "I don't believe I caught your name when I gave you mine, Miss. I certainly won't mind just getting a nom de guerre. I could hardly judge someone harshly for using one of those, now could I?" His eyes somehow managed to twinkle in the dim light. His grinning face was like a younger, perhaps slightly more "off" Santa Claus. Big beard, you know.

Thoughtspeed stood watch over the group at their arrival. In almost any other moment, any other situation, this would be an enjoyable experience, albeit probably with Phantom's presence. A moment of family, together. Perhaps just him and his parents, a chance to ask any questions he had about...just being an adult. He knew they weren't perfect, but they tried, and they'd come a long way from the stories he had pieced together over the years. He was proud of them. He was proud of his father. Which is why this...impostor...in front of him rankled so much that Paige could still pick up her son's agitation, leashed that it was. He paced slowly a bit behind the group, but when Not-Father spoke, his helmeted head turned slowly toward the interloper. "Why do you ask? Do you think there's something there that might offend our delicate sensibilities?"

"I should have been clearer; this seems like some sort of animal-human hybrid, or super-smart animal, or the like. Or maybe not. Maybe it is a giant chipmunk." He stepped back as she used her phone to try and figure out where this hairy figure had wandered in from, and then slipped out the back of the store into the alley with her, content to let her lead for the moment, though once they were outside he was a bit tenser, a bit more aware, a bit more cautious. He frowned in thought as she fished out the tuft of fur. "That...is certainly plausible. More than a few people go dumpster-diving for food. But then the question becomes...why the attempted kidnapping?" He paused. "...Has anyone interviewed the woman this...lurker...was carrying? Has there been a statement from her made public?"

Judex kept smiling as the girl reacted, but he did stop leaning and take a half-step back, tucking his hands into his pockets to try to slightly lessen his threat profile. "Oh, even when talking to yourself, someone is listening." That bit of wisdom dispensed, he slowly stepped into the room, trying to give Ami space and appear as non-threatening as his big, burly self could. If nothing else, Ami ought to figure out that while he wasn't a shining paragon of gleaming clean, he wasn't really dirty. Just...worn-looking. And hey, he didn't smell like he'd been wrapped in trash bags. But...who wore Hawaiian shirts these days? "Judex. That is, that's me, Judex. A pleasure to make your friendly acquaintance. Such a rarity in this troubled town. Rarer still is the care for the people. The real, unpaid care. Sharing your time and your energy and your luck, it's a sign of caring..." He stops, and coughs politely. "Got carried away, sorry. Now now now, let's see..." He leans in a bit, his eyes narrowing, his expression shifting more serious as he watches the footage. "Hungry? Hungry indeed. Hungry like half this city...Hm. Not entirely human. That...sort of looks like a bear, to me. Does it look a bit bear-like to you? Not really a gorilla; they don't have claws or long faces. But...why the coat? And where from?"

Right, there's the setup. I'll provide more details as asked and/or when checks are made, depending. Up to you guys how you get in the house, but there are police-types inside, so you won't be completely alone. -
After the students had left, and Callie Summers had confirmed she was alone and unseen in the office, she closed her eyes and sat back in her chair, letting out a long, tired sigh. For just a few moments, she looked her age, not some timeless figure of stoic wisdom and authority. She wasn't a teacher or a headmistress or a hero, she was just a person who was tired. Finally, she opened her eyes, pulled out some paper and a pen, wrote some sort of note or letter, and sealed it in an envelope. Then, she secured the office and left, letter in hand.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [First Crime Scene] The four teens would arrive to find the house with a couple of police cars and a CSI van out front, and some obviously-busted windows surrounded with police tape. A couple of officers kept watch, though they weren't overly twitchy. Whether the kids just walked in or tried to sneak in, it would quickly be apparent that the home office was the scene of the crime. A well-furnished space that was pretty clearly used regularly, the central focus was the desk and computer; the desk itself was damaged, primarily around the drawers, which had been ripped out, the files and papers within scattered. Glass littered the floor around the window. Two CSI techs were in the room, one of them moving around slowly and photographing evidence, the other poking at the desktop computer at the desk, the machine running but the display on the screen being....odd. This was likely one of the "fresher" crime scenes of the ones offered to the kids.

"I'm glad one of us is more comfortable with that thing. I've always struggled with getting them to do what I want, instead of what I say." What in the world there's a big burly guy with a bushy beard and brown hair leaning against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest and a strange smile on his face. "Perhaps it's just a microcosm of the human condition? Or something else. Who knows. Either way...find anything interesting?" He seemed completely unconcerned about the possible shock his sudden appearance may have.

We'll start with the home. I'll set the scene, and then people can go through their characters arriving, going in, searching about, and y'all can give me checks you think appropriate, and I'll give feedback where appropriate. -
Thoughtspeed tensed up as he picked up strange radio chatter. Within moments, he'd faded from visibility, and he'd surged his speed to be near Hyperactive, or at least less than a mile away. ~Hyperactive, it's Thoughtspeed! I don't have unlimited range here but we need to link up with Fast-Forward! I don't know if you heard the radio but it sounds like an ambush!~ After waiting briefly for an answer, Thoughtpeed, still invisible, would turn and run toward his father, all but blasting out a mental message as soon as he got close enough. ~Dad! I think there's an ambush or something! My radio's picking up some weird chatter!~

Not far from the coffee shop, Daniel Lee was sitting outside of a fairly new public library, on their fenced-in "reader's porch". A spill-proof thermos with still-warm tea kept him hydrated as he steadily devoured his way through the book in front of him. Or rather, books. He had pair of dry-looking electrical engineering books he was glancing through for a few minutes at a time, before he would carefully set them down and switch to a thick, classic-looking novel. Some among the populace might find this odd goings-on for someone's day off, but for Daniel it was practically blissful. The weather was so perfect that he couldn't not be outside, and he was at that perfect place of alertness and eagerness for knowledge that reading through two completely different sorts of texts was not only not a challenge, but actively fun to him. Some people really do like the simple things in life.

Theo had heard about the kidnapping attempt. He'd actually been a bit heart-warmed about the people coming to the woman's aide, but the over-proportionate response (well, for Bedlam it was) by the police made him stop and think. The conclusions he came to were...less than pretty, but unsurprising. Something had to be done, and he'd prefer to look into this himself. If this was a supernatural, or at least superhuman, actor, then he was better-equipped than most to deal with it. If it wasn't, well. Perhaps he could help ensure the actual perpetrator was taken in, rather than a bystander who "looked funny". One could say that none in Bedlam were truly innocent, but there were degrees of guilt, and he would not see anyone but the guilty be punished for this. Somewhere in his contemplation, he realized he was in the form of Judex, and not Theodore Ward. Judex shrugged, and slipped out of Theo's home. Easier not to thing on such things for the time being. Better to go on into the field. Before long, Judex was lurking on a rooftop a few buildings away from Central Perk, all but laying down to avoid being seen. 'Hm hm hm. Too many sheep, too many sheep, and a few too many wolves that play at sheepdogs. The shepherd must herd the sheep, but sometimes the sheepdogs must drive them from danger.' Out of nowhere, everyone gathered in front of the coffee shop would begin to feel nervous. Those nerves quickly escalated, likely driving everyone to a near-panic, with the only certain thing being that they needed to be anywhere except Central Perk. Anywhere.
