Gabriel had been out on a general patrol, regularly checking in with the Lighthouse for local trouble spots. Most of the time thus far had been quiet...until now. He'd received word from Comrade Frost (among a few "knowing chuckles") about odd goings-on at the park. Reports of what Frost thought sounded like Grimms or some other sort of Fae hounds, as well as disappearing shrubbery. Which was the worst kind of shrubbery. So Gabriel was already on edge, and then he heard voices talking, one of them saying something about bells tolling, and while his super-hearing (when he used it) was pretty darn sharp, in some ways he could get tunnel vision where Fae were concerned. Tunnel hearing. Whatever. So the other 4 heroes on the ground might feel their teeth rattle just a tad as Gabriel blurred down into a three-point landing, his silver spear out and shining in the scattered lights in the park, coat flaring in the "updraft" of sonic energy he'd used to cushion himself from his high-speed descent. Less than 3 seconds after he landed, everyone there would hear a loud "crack" from almost directly overhead. Almost like a small plane making a sonic boom? Slowly, the hero in white and silver stood, taking in the scene around him, his body tense. Then, he seemed to realize there wasn't an immediate threat, and his posture relaxed, albeit not entirely. Sidhe and Crow especially would find this hero giving them a bit of side-eye. His spear was gone from view quickly, though. "Well. Good evening, everyone. I'm Gabriel. It sounds like we've got a problem with Fae here."

What roll or rolls should Nevermore make? Also, need to double-check the rules, but I think I can use Extra Effort and have the Fatigue go on the Equipment or Device, instead of Nevermore. If that's the case, I'll be using EE to boost the Talon's Speed by 1-2 ranks...and it's going to start wearing out quickly... EDIT: Hm. Core rulebook is a bit unclear....The justification, in my mind, is Nevermore turning off a couple of safeties/limiters, and pushing the engine beyond the "red zone".- 15 replies

Judex had been pondering going over to at least give a polite "hello" to the young lady in the corner, when a large, surly man walked in and sat down at the bar. Judex gave him a smile, a nod, and a raise of his mug of milk. Otherwise, he left the grumpy fellow alone. Not everyone found cheer during the holidays, sadly. Then another big man came in, ordered a drink, and scooped himself and the surly man into a bear hug! He managed to leave his drink safely behind, not spilling even a drop, as he was pulled over. Then he was thankful that he'd kept his coat on, as a bit of beer went flying, and slid off the leather fairly easily. It wasn't hard to free himself when the man grabbing him was busy almost starting a bar fight. Thankfully the young woman intervened; she seemed to even know the surly fellow! As she implored for peace, Judex himself spoke up. "Indeed! This young lady speaks truth! 'Tis the Season, my friends! Less fighting, more relaxing and celebrating! Or at least drinking, if that's your game." Any menace that big, bushy black beard of his might have exuded was undercut by the milk mustache his mustache was wearing.

Sun Walker blinked at the woman, tilting his head to the side a bit, his bristly sideburns twitching a bit to match his confused look. "Sun Wukong is the Monkey King, the Great Sage, Equal of Heaven. His exploits across China and the Heavens, and his adventures with the monk Xuanzang, have been chronicled for centuries in the novel Journey to the West. He resides in the Heavens with the Jade Emperor, the Buddha, and others, guarding this world much as those of other...pantheons...do. However, before his final ascension, my Honored Ancestor....well. It is not a metaphor, we shall say that." He blushes a bit. "I am a real person, Miss Collins. I am no more a "part" of some sort of "archetypical dimension" than you are. I am likely not the only one blessed with a fragment of the Monkey King's power in this world, though perhaps I am. He has not mentioned others to me when we have spoken. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, Xuanzang's other companions on his journey, were powerful warriors in their own right, and also have descendants today. Perhaps the best term for myself and others somewhat like me would be "demigod". Imprecise, but the best I can give, at least in English." -
"Please." Nevermore's voice was gruff, but...still gentle. "Just...please. Say something. Explain what it was you just tried to take. Why you thought you...you had to try and...and do that. Surely it's not that bad. You should know we're not the sort to drive people to that. Who wants this stuff? Why?"

Judex got a really long, odd look from the bartender, to which he responded with a smile that was equal parts "mysterious" and "creepy", but finally the bartender relented and made him up a fairly large mug of cold milk. It was fresh and everything; folks this time of year liked eggnog and other such things, so it was fresher than normal for this place. Once Judex had his drink, he put down a couple of bills and moved to the end of the bar, which happened to put him closer to Osla. Once he sat down in a stool, for just a moment his whole personage just seemed to....slump. As if tired, weary. His head bowed, and though Osla heard no sound she could faintly see his lips moving. Perhaps a prayer of some sort? His moment finished, and Judex proceeded to drink deeply of his mug of cold milk.

Cobalt Templar Corbin smiled as Mike and Alex made their way over, though he stepped back just a bit as Mark commenced with the hugging. Part of him still felt a bit self-conscious about being part of the "second generation" of Young Freedom, and though they all generally worked together on the Liberty League these days, the less-than-normal situation of a big party like this seemed to stir up the uncertainty. He stamped down on that and reached out to shake Mike's hand first, and then Alex's. "Mike! Alex! Always a pleasure! Quo-Dis is floating about here somewhere. It's good to see you guys when we're just having fun! I think I heard Erin and Trevor mention swinging by but it was noncommittal, so who knows for sure. How have you two been doing?"

Sun stepped aside to let Emerald Spider in first. "You first, Lady Spider." Such a gentleman! Then he entered and shook Sharl's hand, giving the man a slight smile that seemed to nonetheless speak of a large amount of enjoyment. "It was just a quick jog, really, Sir Sharl. It really is more than a bit of an honor to have been invited. I know I haven't been quite as visibly active as some of you; despite having had my powers for a while now, I'm still getting used to them. Plus I...went on walkabout a bit. Either way, while I admire the inclusiveness of the spread, I'm perfectly content to enjoy all foods. I do hope you've got something that involves bacon." Sharl would know he meant "I took a bit of a trip in space", considering when that journey started. Sun turned and blinked a bit at June's passionate questioning. Stepping further inside (so as to not risk blocking the door), he clasped his hands behind his back as he spoke. The tip of his tail twitched with nervous energy a bit, even wrapped around his waist as it was. "I suppose the answer to that question is both "No" and "Yes". My ancestry is not quite fully human, but I was not hybridized or chimeraized by modern science. Many many years ago, Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, did what many men of his temperament and fame did, and many generations later, here I am. My ancestor came to me in a dream, offered to enhance me, and I took his offer. I decided, why not be a hero with that? I apologize if the nontraditional route for my current physical form isn't quite what you'd hoped. You do look very nice today yourself, Miss Collins." -
Cobalt Templar Corbin had been acquiring a drink for himself in one hand, a small sandwich in the other, and a second drink secured in a blue glow. Barely watching it, he expertly guided said drink over to Quo-Dis, deftly avoiding any collisions until it was floating within easy reach. When mark slapped him on the shoulder, he grinned and held his own drink and food in a similar telekinetic grip as he pulled Mark into a hug. One that probably wouldn't break bones, even! "Mark! My man! We don't see each other enough! It's going fine. Quo-Dis and I had a smooth flight over. Looks like you and Nina didn't have any wacky adventures on your way. I've been staying busy with a decent bit of solo work, plus college. Two degrees and all that." His frame shook with a mock shudder at that factoid. "And they're in separate fields, no less!"

Gabriel These sorts of parties almost always had music going near-constantly; often it was soft and subtle in the background, and other times a bit louder, more of the central focus. This party was no different; there was a small but somewhat obvious stage set up in one corner of the room that had a piano and a few other instruments, along with several music stands. For the moment, no one was playing any music, and only one person stood at the stage. Gabriel, his outfit shining and gleaming even more than usual, shuffled a few pages around as he sipped at a drink. Nominally speaking, he was one of the designated "hosts" for the evening, but he was also expected to provide some live music. He was happy to do both, but even for a social master like himself it was a bit much every once in a while, so for just a few breaths he'd retreated under the excuse of "making sure everything was in order". Having done so, he set the last page down and stepped off the stage. Back to mingling! A smile came to his face again as he started to move around, greeting people he hadn't seen for a while, or even just a couple of shifts around the Hall. He kept his eyes open for new arrivals, though for the moment everyone seemed to be finding some of the more "senior" League members, so there weren't guests floating about too aimlessly.

Standing at the door outside, hand raised to knock.... Was a being who looked part-ape, part-human, and seemed dressed more for the tropics than a cold day in the Northwest United States. His colors were fairly festive; between his fur (fur!) and clothes, there was a lot of gold and red. He blinked as Sharl opened the door, slowly lowering his hand. Before it went to the back of his head, awkwardly scratching for a moment, in a sort of nervous tick. He offered his other (right) hand to Sharl. "Hello! Ah, I'm Sun Walker. I'm....sort of new to town. I hope it is acceptable for me to be here?" -
Suddenly, there was light. It was tinted blue, but present nonetheless. It came from where Cobalt Templar was standing. After a moment, it was clear he had a squared flashlight of sorts strapped to his shoulder. Likely conjured by his powers. His hands held several more such small harnesses and lights. He gave a slightly sheepish grin. "I've got enough for everyone. If you want them. Wouldn't mind Mark giving us more light; these might go 'poof' if we get into the thick of it, but they'll do for now at least." He offered up enough to equip everyone, though if some of his companions refused, he would simply dismiss the hard-light constructs.

The Bar's reputation was a bit mixed, but in a city like Bedlam, that was a downright compliment. It didn't seem too full right now, either, just a couple scattered patrons at corners. Then, the door opened, and someone stepped inside. A man in a long coat with a hood walked inside, his head held down for a moment, before he reached behind himself and closed the door. Then those hands slowly reached up, even as the man (whose beard could be seen even if his face could not) slowly began walking toward the bar. As he walked, he started singing, barely more than a whisper, his Southern twang somehow making his gravely voice all the more menacing. Especially when the words became a bit clearer... "He's making a list. He's checking it twice. He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice..." A few steps away from the bar, he threw back the hood in a sudden gesture, revealing a hat upon his head, no mask, and a face that seemed tailor-made for the not-quite-crazed grin upon it. He finished the verse as he took those last few steps. "Santa Claus is comin', to town...." He slid onto a bar stool, grinning at the bartender. For a few moments, he glanced around at whoever else was there, before leaning in a bit, his voice low as he spoke (instead of singing). "Bartender. On this fine evening, I would request...." He paused, his grin dropping a bit, and his voice a bit quieter still. "The largest possible glass of milk I can get."

Cobalt Templar Not long after Mark and Nina arrived, another couple touched down, though this pair had elected to go to the more private side entrance. After taking several moments to look around, the large blue figure flashed with light, and was suddenly clad in a fairly classic tuxedo bearing a few tasteful highlights to match his normal costume's coloration, and a more fanciful mask on his face that covered from above his eyebrows to the bottom of his nose, and all the way back to his hairline. It seemed carved from polished sapphire, yet moved like it was mere cloth. His eyes were covered with lenses that appeared slightly red-tinted from the outside (but were clear as air from his perspective). Such was the subtle power of the Blue Ring, available to the larger-than-life hero, Cobalt Templar. Who at the moment was all but fussing over his fiancee, Ultiwoman, aka Quo-Dis. "Do you need me to throw up a screen or anything? I know you normally do quick changes, but you said you'd picked out a nice dress for tonight." He narrowed his eyes (an action she felt across their link but couldn't really see behind the lenses) in mock suspicion. "You didn't secretly plan to try just coming in the buff, like at that one party 3 months ago, did you?" She knew he was teasing her, and lightly at that. While some things occasionally troubled her with wider Earth culture, Corbin Hughes was an open book to her.

Thoughtspeed took it all in in slow-motion. He saw Miracle Girl dive for the phone booth. One problem solved. He considered the options in front of them, before sending a mental message to Miracle Girl and Ace Danger. 'I've got the Lambo! Ace, maybe you should go after Mister Sparkler! Miracle Girl, maybe you could go after the Veyron when the grandma's safe?' The young hero definitely wasn't demanding anything, but he was assessing the situation and thinking of a response at completely inhuman speeds. Frankly the main reason these thugs weren't more slowed down yet was because he was trying to prevent crashes or major car damage. But the latter was now not as critical in his mind. 'Unless one of you has a better idea for me I think I'm going to try ripping this jerk's tires up.' As he thought at his allies, he was racing along the street, still invisible to the eye, even as twin blades of kinetic energy began to form around his hands, flowing into familiar shapes for him.

Nevermore arranged Weaver so she wouldn't risk choking. Once he was satisfied of her safety, he moved back a bit and ended up sitting down on the floor. Perhaps in an odd reflex, the lenses on his mask retracted, and his real eyes showed through his mask. The look in them was...distant. As if he was remembering something. "I understand fighting against capture. I understand planning escape. But...to try and take your own life. I....why?" He seemed genuinely confused.
-
Miracle Girl and Ace Danger would soon feel the mental equivalent of a knock on the door, or perhaps a phone ringing. Assuming they didn't completely reject the contact, they'd soon hear the mental voice of what seemed to be a young man. 'Hey, this is Thoughtspeed! I'm tailing these jerks right now, just I'm not visible. Because sneaky. Anyway. I can keep us looped together like this. I'm going to help take these guys in but I'm not sure how to do this without making a big car wreck. My two best options will either leave these guys blind and driving high-performance cars at triple-digit speeds, or have me carving the cars up like a turkey. I can do either one no problem but maybe the problems are obvious? I'm open to plans here.'

Nevermore did not facepalm, both because he had more discipline than that and because he wasn't one to use such a gesture in day to day life. But Ouroboros could tell that was roughly his emotional reaction, as Nevermore stopped for just a moment, before letting go of Weaver and reaching down to his belt. He extracted a strange-looking device that he quickly placed a vial of liquid into the base of. Before actually putting it to her neck, he pressed a button on his belt and one on his cowl, and a soft light emitted from a few discrete positions on his suit, before numbers flashed on the screen of the handheld device, and it was pressed against Weaver's neck with a soft 'hiss' sound. "There. Broad spectrum anti-toxin, adjusted based on initial scans of shifting body chemistry. Worst case she's sick for a week and then everything's fine." He tucks the hypospray away and just...sits down on the floor, staring at her.

Nullify Poisons is what I'd generally thought, just wasn't sure how the math worked out. Effects others touch-range nullify poison.
-
Olopi, I'm fine with just hand waving Nevermore using his Gadgets to have an anti-poison. But if you want I can suss out what would work best mechanically.

Probably going to be the story for a lot of us, but, with the holiday this week my time around the forum will be spotty for the next few days.
