GM Roaring incoherently, the Helltree's eyes rolled in their hideous sockets, the thing's howl resolving into a stream-of-consciousness "IcursedthemtoeverseeonlythebestinthosewhomeanthemharmandwhentheycameatlasttoruinIsweptalltheirgoodworksawaytheirchildrenAnnaFrederickhatedTysonhatedthatkidalwayssmilingandugh-!" Meanwhile Coco, shivering with terror, exertion and the freezing cold, leaped for Jessica's arms, eyes wide as saucers and legs spread like a flying squirrel's. He missed catastrophically, burrowing straight down her shirt in a tiny, vibrating bundle of mewling misery, clawing his head out of her collar. Meanwhile, the tree was evidently stuck in a reverie. Newp! Rerolling adds +10 to any roll equal to or under 11. So that is instead a 22. Or 21, taking into account the earlier Bruise. So failed by 4, so Bruised again. Roll away with your Attack roll on the Paralyze, Blood!

You have several options, from shooting off the branch Coco is on with your blast, stunting a Move Object to just nab the cat, Paralyzing the tree to grab them, and so on.

GM The Hellish might clashed on sinful vigor, and with an anguished howl from Jessica's enemy the woken tree's icy sheathe bubbled and melted from its corpse-white bark. All but simultaneously, the icey soldiers who had risen at its command unceremoniously collapsed, their yelling cargo letting out a unified "Ufp!" as they hit the snow. Trudy looked mutinous, but the rest, Serena especially, managed to win her over by hoisting her on their collective shoulder and hustling off into the night, Marsha hollering back "You give it to 'im, Jessie! We'll...call the cops! Bye!" With that the quartet dashed off out of the frozen wasteland of Liberty Park, to where the light and reason(and indoor heating) of humanity prevailed against the winter night. But the hellish tree, rooted, literally, to the spot, was powerless to follow. It thrashed and flailed madly with its branches, setting the luckless Coco Meowmers into the struggle of his tiny life as he clung desperately to the branch of his captor, too scared and rattled even to mew piteously. At last, with a final roar and lash of its bone-like limbs, the tree of Hell lashed out with a blasphemous invocation that sent a hailstorm of icicles several yards long, several feet thick and tapering to razor points raining down on Jessica! The other, lesser trees around her simply began to splinter and collapse under the absurd assault, shrapnel blasting at her from all directions!

Round 2: Helltree: Unharmed-GM Witchblood: Bruised(x1), 2HP The other women take Jessica's advice to heart and run for it. HP for prioritizing protecting them over just attacking the tree. (now at 3HP) Helltree attacks, a hail of icy spears crashing through the frozen branches: 20. Which seems to hit. DC25 TOU save, please. Coco Meowmers' DC20 Reflex save to cling for his poor kitty life in all the thrashing boughs: 30. Safe for now.

GM February 2nd, 2.22AM, 2018 The Stately Faretti Haunted Manor... Outside the world was white. All of Lantern Hill was blanketed in the same piling, driving mass of sub-zero powder. Diamonds glittered in every snowbank, deer driven from the Wharton State Forest to find forage tip-toed gingerly through the yards, leaping fences to nibble at some potted greens. Birds fluttered and shivered as they hunted for scraps to bring back to the nest, keeping an eye out for any night-prowling cats. And Taylor Xiao Chun Faretti did not have to think about any of that, relaxing after an exhausting day, strong walls and a sturdy roof(not to mention a particularly powerful elemental ward) kept the chill at bay. For all her cares as Heshem's chosen and the newly-minted Master Mage of Earth's dimension and dominions, for the moment such things could wait. Which was about when the familiar, sepulchral voice spoke. Chosen The golden light of the lamp that roiled into being, along with the robed figure whose hands held it aloft on its staff, was unmistakable. There is a crack in the gates. Through it, innocents fall to darkness. My light shields them, but the night is hungry. The light curled, and for a moment Taylor saw eyes hard with anger. Such has never been, it must never be again. With a roar of fire, the image of Heshem vanished.

The pilot is clearly experiencing something *very* different from what Hakim and Anne are. If he can't hear the piercing screams right in his ear(which, for some reason, talking through is *perfectly fine*), and didn't notice his entire plane and every piece of technology on his plane turning into unworkable facsimiles and thinks his radios work, he's just not operating on the same frequency as Levity.

GM The book was quite helpful. It had seemingly anticipated Sha'ir's wishes and flipped itself neatly to the page on those powers who judged and ruled over the dead. Among them was a green dragon, formed from the forests of both land and sea named Ao Guang. The majority of the text was about how spirits, once departed from their physical shells, were warped by their pasts sins or fixations into parodies of themselves, with a great deal of stress on the necessity of a balanced and healthy lifestyle to avoid some horrible fate. It was, frankly, a little too pointed in talking about the sins of gluttony. What it had to say about whispering ghosts and twisting ghosts was particularly interesting. Able to become any person(whispers) or anything(twists), they were the ghosts of people who tried to abuse the legal system to serve their own ends or had grown obsessed with material goods and wealth. Somehow, that had led to their downfall and death. But there was a caveat: some of these ghosts were the victims of people so afflicted, who had lost everything to the courts or who had been ruined by greedy relatives. They had no friend in Ao Guang. The green dragon had always been opposed to and hated humanity and was always looking for ways to trick or corrupt them. Once they died and fell into his claws, they suffered. Sometimes a great hero had risen up and rescued the souls from his fastnesses in the dark forests and swamps, but sooner or later he would steer more of the miserable dead through his gates. Of course the legends stemmed from centuries ago, nobody having claimed to see giant green dragons lurking in the woodland castles or owning undersea palaces in the age of satellite photography or deep-sea exploration. The most 'recent' thing Hakim could find was him serving as the villain in stories about the hero-god Nezha, metaphors for humanity's conquest of the natural world and its systems supplanting the chaos of nature. ----------------------------------------- "What do you make of all this, uh...Levity?" the pilot Liu gestured expansively to the flapless wings and bogglingly-unsecured windows "I've been all over this thing and nothing's like what it's supposed to be, you know? But it wasn't like this when we were coming over the Emeralds, couldn't stay in the air if it was." He wiped sweat from his face with one sleeve "If we get out of this, my plane just crashes. There's a weird singing in the air and nothing works, except the onboard radio, but we have food and water enough to last us a few days. That long enough to get us all out of here?"

Everything that has some way to conceal its inner workings appears to just be a dummy. Like the radio on the pilot's hip, for example, that's clearly just plastic moulded to look like a radio.

"Oh!" Hyperslice's eyes nearly doubled in size "O-okay! Wonderful! Let'sss go!" Grabbing the woman's hand, Skirris hurled the pair of them through the silver darkness between worlds, reality flitting by like tearing spiderweb. The trick with hyperspace was that the longer you spent in it, the shorter the distance you actually went. This wasn't so noticeable on anything larger than a person and most journeys between planets required distances that far outstripped that condition's meaningful effect. It also had to do with relative time scales. While it had seemed like minutes in the span between each jump in her attack on the guards, it had really been split seconds. But jumping from one end of a city to another, on the same planet, on the same continent, had a much greater risk of over or undershooting, so Skirris appreciated the extra time to think. She had plenty to think about. 'That light must be the Stormbringer's army. I hope. If they're this close then we can get to the truth of all this! He's probably got an adviser who makes the real decisions. If we can talk with her Cavalier and Paradigm will see we ought to help them. Then we can realize her dream of a united planet. Nothing else makes sense, she'd know all this is for nothing if the planet fractures again. Maybe the Anointer's her son?' The hairline silver cracks flexed around Skirris and the woman as Hyperslice detected the shadows of the meeting point. With a sharp hiss of breath the super-speedster flung the pair of them back into the world of light. Hyperslice burst from midair right next to Cavalier, the Kolastian woman tucked gently under one arm, the Praetorian's powerful limb elegantly lowering her cargo to the ground. She flicked her tail at the far wall. "Sssaw a new ssstar in their sssky. I think the Anointer will overssshadow usss pretty sssoon."

Skirris couldn't look ashamed, which was a blessing, but she also couldn't meet Officer Dressa's eyes after Sitara's reminder of the Imperial Legion's place on the station. Hyperslice wasn't called on for missions often and the secret plan to rescue the crew of a Lor experimental ship had been a joyride after a cycle crammed into CoVic Station. Sri Sitara had had even approved of her, treated her like an equal. But... ...she was still half a child to them, and the muted-gray forcefield springing up to assure people her handlers were on the case was a gust of sand into the wound. Turning awkwardly to the Signaian she'd manhandled, she mumbled "I'm...sssorry." To Dressa she added "I...I didn't mean any of...I'm sssorry." The look she got in return can be easily imagined, but it wasn't half as cutting as what looked for sure to be Sri Melek giving her a withering glance. Her other comrade from the ship expedition, and she'd shamed her as well. Thoroughly deflated, Hyperslice slithered out of the bar to wait outside. She coiled into a loose pile in a corner and stonily ignored the curious looks of passers-by as she gnawed at the faux-pas. For most of the Praetorians, this would have been a momentary setback, a slip-up to be quickly set aside and taken as a reminder of what not to do in stressful situations where lots of people were there to see. 'I've ruined it. They're going to finish this mission, and send me home. My first big shot and I wasted it' Then, of course, came what would happen when she got back to Nest. What would her mother say? What would Queen-Mother? Would they put the Dam back together? Get the mentats to staple her brain? Throw her into the sun? Hyperslice brooded in the corner, waiting for the worst to happen.

<"I want anssswersss, damnit!"> Shoving the beleaguered officer away with a lash of her powerful tail, Hyperslice slammed her fist onto the table, glaring down at the thoroughly confused Signaian. This is me being selfish, Morrison, but I put all 1,000,451 of my votes on Dalir. The Eighth-Fold Web are great as being basically the ECs' SHADOW, the Rings and their ties to the forgotten Cryptid Clans have loads of hooks on them along with being uniquely non-damaging artefacts, and you could easily turn them into a space/multiverse type along the road.

@Supercape This kind of situation is common when dreams come to life, either through a powerful psychic or else by intersections of the Dream Dimension and Prime. It's not real, per se, but it's almost impossible not to accept it as real even when you know.

GM Gravity, and with it reality itself, turned to a constricting net of invisible coils that held the creature fast! It reared and raked the air with its great talons, but locked to the ground as it was the thing was helpless to evade or escape Emerald Spider's fast-acting cosmic anchor. The ground where the thing had trodden and torn up, a sheer blackness as suffocating as fog, was full of tiny points of light. Not stars, but...things. None of the party even had to look at them to know that in the darkness things were moving, coming closer and closer with terrifying speed. Things that would make the creature before Murk, or, to the two women, an invisible threat, seem as harmless as a puppy.

<"A chance for redemption...yet? Oh, sir!"> Red Moon flung herself at Whistable's feet <"Yes! Just tell me what I must do and I will do it, without hesitation!"> It was starting to get a little much how many people thought she was Chinese based on the fact they couldn't see her face, what with the helmet and s smoke inside and hat and the scarf. She supposed it was just as well, since it would be pretty hard to explain otherwise. <"But what must I tell my former conspirators? Surely you fear the sinister knives of the Scots, sir? No woman is so brave as to defy them!"> She'd have to study Scotland when she got back home, Atraxia suspected she was treading on fairly insulting ground. But so long as Whistable raised no objections and disn't appear to realize she was talking nonsense, there couldn't be any harm in furthering the deception.
