There are things that are unfortunate in this World. Not everyone always gets what they deserve, and not everyone always gets what they want. It is not the fault of those who had unfortunate situations happen to them that those things did happen, and often their consequences are, regrettably, not just upon the individual. But there are also those who have no compunctions about what they do, and benefit from those consequences. Compassion and Conviction must be handled in equal measure. Early September 2024, Midtown: Champion's Restaurant It was getting close to closing time at Champion's. Attached to the Super Museum, it needed to close when the museum did, so it often ended up closing a little earlier than a traditional restaurant would. They had stopped taking orders a little bit ago, and were just closing out the last checks. The entertainment tonight, or rather, the special thing that had drawn a larger crowd than usual, was a special yearly retirement ceremony. Several Heroes who had either finished their careers or had trained up successors to take their place were officially hanging up the cape, and the Super Museum was taking in several pieces of their costumes, equipment, and the like. In addition to this was a small telethon for the children's hospital. The retirees had been at Champion's most of the day, taking it in shifts to donate their gear, give speeches, and be interviewed about their old days; many would have private retirement ceremonies or more grandiose ones later, this was often only one stop on the retirement tour. Buddy Brand, the popular news anchor of WCZA 7, had been handling the last portion of the telethon. He'd interviewed Hot Streak and Cold Rush, a pair of speedsters with hot and cold based powers, respectively, who were gladly retiring together now that their child had graduated to a full time hero herself. They'd talked at length about their battles with various villains and how they ended up starting their first teamups and then dating, but it was all in good fun- they enjoyed talking about the not so friendly rivalry they'd had when they were younger-, but they'd ended up packing it in themselves. There were only a few people left in Champion's, and they were heading out, leaving just Buddy and a couple of members of the crew to finish packing up the Telethon gear and get out of there; time for them to head home themselves. It had been a successful day, with no major incidents, which often meant problems were just around the corner.

OOC thread for this thread. @Spacefurry @Supercape To start with, DC10 Notice checks to locate the Shadowcaster, our ship in distress. Space, since the boat Blackstaff is in, the PanStar 3QH, has a mission of its own, a DC15 Social Skill (Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate) check will be necessary to convince the captain to change course.

GM July 4th, 2023, 6.37PM Pacific Ocean, 50 nautical miles from the Oregon coast Blackstaff The conclusion was as inescapable as it was impossible to accept: under the cold, leaden weight of the Peaceful Ocean, far below the light of the life-giving Sun, the machinations of equally antipyrated hearts had created a dark edifice, a visage, a mask of stone through which eyes alien and incorporeal could peer into the brimming, oblivious swarms of life, and decide their fate by measures impossible for any brain thwarted by a linear existence to comprehend. And now its worshippers gathered, to pledge a fealty as mad as it was undying, to defend it against the feeble struggles of the pale things which sought to avoid their inevitable fate. On the other hand, the PanStar representative had been very eager to make clear that the Deep Ones needn't necessarily be killed, and a diplomatic resolution that allowed them to move their camoflagued underwater surveillance module away from the temple-reef sonar pulses had uncovered would be more than acceptable. And now here he was, on a small, fast boat equipped with diving gear, heading for the locus of unearthly phenomena with only his thoughts, two stolidly uniformed representatives from the Brande Management Security Company, a three-man crew, and a captain constantly dropping by to check how he was doing to fill the anxious hour. Captain Cosmos "We can't thank you enough, Captain Cosmos!" the co-pilot of Singapore Airlines flight 56SO shook the hero's hand fervently, still panting a little from the exhilaration of the last few minutes. Behind him, the plane windows opened on the beautiful sight of the Oregon and Washington coasts, the cloud-strewn Atlas Mountains, the Emerald Cities nestled beneath the peaks on the banks of a wide, slow Columbia River. "I know I can't, they're likely gone forever, but I'd still like to thank Science Communicator Buddy and Labour Activist Buddy for all they did to help us with that bomb, and that near-riot on the second floor." "Approaching the site of the distress call," announced Captain Sen, looking much better without the tape the now-unconscious Overthrow agent had swathed him in, "I believe this is your stop, Captain Cosmos. I took the liberty of contacting the local Coast Guard, in case they need more help than we did." He couldn't help but smirk, though he did a good job hiding it. "Best of luck to you, Captain. If you're ever in Changi, look me up, Jai Sen!"

(GM Post) December 7th, 2023, Evening, WCZA Station WELCOME BACK! YOU'RE WATCHING FREEDOM CITY'S FLAGSHIP NEWS SHOW THE BRAND REPORT Starring....BUDDY BRAND TONIGHT'S GUEST: State Senator Phillip Fredrickson A year ago- and for the 15 years before that- Phillip Fredrickson was one of the most prolific voices in the New Jersey State Senate for Superhero and meta-human registration. An old, stately looking man in his late 60s, Phillip had been a consistent crusader for believing that the world would be safer if meta-humans and Superheroes were registered in the government, and that New Jersey, as host to Freedom City, could be the world’s first example of doing something like that ‘the right way’. That had changed suddenly. Phillip’s granddaughter, Gabriela, had developed a meta-human ability. And in return, he had come to realize his mistakes and his incorrect beliefs, now that his skin was in the game- so to speak-, he had come to change his tune. He was now pushing for expanded care for meta-human children without requiring a sign-up or a registration, support for any family who had a young child who suddenly had meta-human abilities appear- counseling for parent and child, training on power control and any unique materials they needed to manage their powers. However, changing one's opinions was often a moment of danger for a politician, even when the reasons were good and the person was staunch in both their explanations and in all their other beliefs; Fredrickson had not changed any other position he held, and was clear that was always going to be the case, but he was changing a significant cornerstone of his campaign and his personal code, which was a negative to many people. His support had cratered, his political capital was in shreds, and what had been a solid re-election campaign was now in crisis as he attempted to right a sinking ship. Despite this, he refused to back down from his changed position, and was clear that even if it cost him the election, he wasn't going to change his tune; he loved his granddaughter, and he realized that all meta-humans were someone's grandchild, and that they deserved as much help as they could. His campaign staff had put him on Buddy's show to hopefully let the people see that while he may of changed his opinions, he was still the strong willed man he'd always been, who kept his word and worked for his constituency. The old man had a stately dignity to him even in crisis and at the risk of losing his seat; his hair was gray and thinning but worn in a close cut. His suit was nice and his blue tie added a splash of color where it was needed. He answered questions posed by Buddy with a firm voice that didn't waver, even when he was asked tough questions. He was calm under pressure and respectful to his host. But everything changed during a commercial break. An aide ran up to him with a cellphone, whispered something in his ear, and then gave him the phone. "Hello?" He asked. Then he listened. For a full minute, Buddy could see his face getting paler and paler. The old man swallowed, and he suddenly looked much less vigorous. He looked, truthfully, like a scared old man. He looked at Buddy with eyes that showed a deep sorrow; something terrible was on that phone call. His voice wasn't strong anymore, it trembled and he looked almost like he was going to burst into tears. "I'm sorry...I don't know that I can continue this interview...something serious has come up."

Captain Cosmos Power Level: 11 (194/205 PP) Unspent Power Points: 11 Trade-Offs: -4 Attack / +4 DC, -4 Defence / +4 Toughness In Brief: Multidimensional Paragon Alternate Identity: Buddy Brand Birthplace: San Franisco Residence: Freedom City Occupation: Newsreader Affiliations: None Family: Bernard Brand (Estranged Father, Businessman), Violet Brand (Lawyer Sister) Description: Age: 44 Apparent Age: 44 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Height: 5’11” Weight: 85 Kgs Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown / White Buddy is a fairly tall, broad man, with a physique representative of regular but not extreme exercise. He looks fairly close to his age, with silver flecked white hair and a few wrinkles. He has what many call a “trustworthy” face. When dressed as Captain Cosmos he has a black and grey spandex costume and mask, complete with cape. His chest has a golden “X” shaped cross on it. Captain Cosmos can change his dimensions. As a one-dimensional being he is essentially an imperceptible line. As a two dimensional being he will be completely flat. As a four dimensional being, he looks slightly faint, as if out of synch with the universe. As a five dimensional being, he appears to move with a faint blur. As a hyperdimensional being he gives an almost indescribable appearance of being “hyper-real” – even to those with normal senses there is an impression that he exists in countless incomprehensible dimensions. History: Buddy had an undesirable upbringing with a father who simply pushed him too hard to succeed at everything, wanting him to be a lawyer or politician. In university, Buddy rebelled, and ended up working in media, which ended up enjoying – and being promoted to newsreader for WCZA Channel 7 News. His flagship show is "the Brand Report", where he grills famous persons of Freedom City on a Thurdsay Evening. Buddy’s life changed when he ran into an alternate version of himself late on evening, driving home from an out of town party. The mysterious figure was “Captain Cosmos” and lay dying on the road. As Buddy comforted the dying man, he heard his dying words “Beware…the Collapse!” and was then infused with a hyperdimensional energy source, granting him extraordinary powers. For the first few days Buddy was wracked with nausea and disorientation. His physician, Doctor Linda LaBelle, ran some tests and came up with some extraordinary results. To this day, only she knows of his secret identity. Buddy felt both a duty to carry on the mantle of Captain Cosmos, and a duty to address some of the terrible things he had reported on in the world. Thus, Captain Cosmos roamed the skies once more… Personality & Motivation: Captain Cosmos is a friendly guy who is generally well liked. Having seen much of the darker side of the world as a newsman, he has a cynical streak, although he is generally an optimistic sort. In other words, he sees a lot of problems in the world, but also feels that they can be sorted out. His relationship with his father growing up was pretty awful, and whilst he has internalised some of that inner drive to succeed, he doesn’t like that. He is left with a chronic feeling of not being “good enough”, which drives his career and his personal life. Powers & Tactics: Captain Cosmos draws on the power of all the alternate versions of Buddy Brand throughout the multiverse (although only one has this power). This grants him amazing strength and resilience, and as he can sustain himself from the life force of all his alternate versions, immunity to any biological attack. In addition he can fly, and can alter his dimensions, either lowering them (one or two dimensional) or raising them (and thus being able to bypass normal space and time considerations) He will reduce his dimensions primarily for stealth, although sometimes fights two dimensionally if he is tired, weakened, and feels justified in using his dangerous “slicing” ability. He is more cautious about gaining extra dimensions due to the effect it has on his mental health – particularly for extended periods of time. But, if under pressure, he will use them. Power Descriptions: Captain Cosmos’ dimensional changes appear as above (Appearance). His flight causes a rumbling sound, and ripple in space behind him. Complications: Possibly Psychotic: Gaining more than three dimensions tends to scramble his brain if sustained for long. He will become increasingly paranoid, hallucinate, and display thought disorder. This does not make him violent (as he is not a violent man), but it is disabling and frightening. Even seconds will start to make him slightly suspicious, a few minutes will make him symptomatic, whilst a few hours could drive him to life threatening catatonia As he starts to become paranoid, the GM can start to give false information or present hallucinations as real. At the more severe end of these symptoms, his speech will start to disintegrate and make communication jumbled or garbled. These effects are sped up in high gravity (his descent to psychosis taking seconds) and slowed down in low gravity. Zero gravity (such as space) hugely slows down these effects, so he could operate in hyperdimensional forms for days with minimal effect. Buddy takes a few days to improve from these side effects (Depending on severity, it may take a shorter time or longer time). Those skilled in Behavioural Sciences might help him cope with these symptoms via psychological techniques, whilst those skills in medicine might rapidly speed his recovery (to hours) with antipsychotic drugs. Seizures, including ECT, will cause extremely rapid improvement (possibly instant). Busy Body: Buddy’s Secret ID is both busy and famous, and he lives in the competitive, stressful world of Media. Whilst able and reasonably popular, he is not so skilled that he is irreplaceable. Chronic Consciousness: Whilst Captain Cosmos can time travel, it is not easy for him. He will black out (fall unconscious) with either voluntary or involuntary time travel (or possibly, even temporal effects). Dread of Drowning: As a child, Buddy nearly drowned in a white-water rafting expedition – and his Father remonstrated him badly. He has a lingering fear of being submerged (although he no longer has any danger of drowning). Whilst actually underwater he is only slightly anxious, it is the process of actually submerging that is dreadful to him. If he voluntary submerges himself he would need at least a moment to steel himself (causing delay), whilst an involuntary submerging (from knockback or telekinesis or the like) would send him into a paralytic panic. Zero: Captain Cosmos could plausibly eliminate all his dimensions; essentially a zero-dimensional form, thus ceasing (temporarily) to exist at all. Whilst he would never voluntarily do this (arguably he could not voluntary force his own non-existence) massive exotic dimensional effects or super high gravity might cause this state – as might a malignant mind controller. Captain Cosmos Power Level: 12 (248/250 PP) Unspent Power Points: 2pp Trade-Offs: -3 Attack / +3 DC, -3 Defence / +3 Toughness In Brief: Multidimensional Paragon Alternate Identity: Buddy Brand Birthplace: San Francisco Residence: Freedom City Occupation: Newsreader Affiliations: None Family: Bernard Brand (Estranged Father, Businessman), Violet Brand (Lawyer Sister) Description: Age: 45 Apparent Age: 45 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Mixed-Caucasian Height: 5’10” Weight: 85 Kgs Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown / White Buddy is a man of average build with a physique representative of regular but not extreme exercise. He looks fairly close to his age, with silver flecked black hair, a tan, and a few wrinkles. He has what many call a “trustworthy” face. When dressed as Captain Cosmos he wears a blue and orange spandex costume and mask, complete with cape. Captain Cosmos can change his dimensions. As a one-dimensional being he is essentially an imperceptible line. As a two dimensional being he will be completely flat. In transdimensional form he will look slightly translucent. In hyperdimensional form he will appear to be slightly blurred. Most bizarrely, in Antidimensional form he will look as if flipped in a mirror. To this day, only she knows of his secret identity. Buddy felt both a duty to carry on the mantle of Captain Cosmos, and a duty to address some of the terrible things he had reported on in the world. Thus, Captain Cosmos roamed the skies once more… Personality & Motivation: Happy, anxious, driven. Captain Cosmos is a friendly guy who is generally well liked. Having seen much of the darker side of the world as a newsman, he has a cynical / realistic outlook, although he is generally an optimistic sort. In other words, he sees a lot of problems in the world, but also feels that they can be sorted out. His relationship with his father growing up was pretty awful. His father put immense pressure on Buddy (and Buddy’s sister, Violet) to be hyper successful. He is left with a chronic feeling of not being “good enough”, which drives his career and his personal life. This leaves him with a chronic (but usually well hidden, as befits a TV presenter) anxiety about being fired or failing somehow. Powers & Tactics: Captain Cosmos draws on the power of all the alternate versions of Buddy Brand throughout the multiverse (although only he has this power). This grants him amazing strength and resilience, and as he can sustain himself from the life force of all his alternate versions, making him immune to any biological attack. Most commonly, he will use his hyperdimensional form, drawing on the strength of countless other Buddy Brands and reinforcing his own resilience and power. He will sometimes summon alternative versions of Buddy Brand, for instance if he needs someone to cover his show or pretend to be Buddy, or because he simply needs more helping hands. Power Descriptions: Captain Cosmos’ dimensional changes appear as above (Appearance). His flight leaves a slight rippling behind him but is entirely silent. Complications: Buddy or no buddy?: Alternative versions of Buddy (Multidimensional/Summon power) are usually the same happy, anxious, nice guy version of Buddy (i.e. default summoning friendly attitude). But the process is not 100% accurate. Alt versions have their own agenda and, particularly if more extreme / deviant versions are summoned (such as Caveman Buddy, or Pirate Buddy), may be indifferent or even hostile. Busy Body: Buddy’s Secret ID is both busy and famous, and he lives in the competitive, stressful world of Media. Whilst able and reasonably popular, he is not so skilled that he is irreplaceable. Dread of Drowning: As a child, Buddy nearly drowned in a white-water rafting expedition – and his Father remonstrated him badly. If he voluntary submerges himself he would need at least a moment to steel himself (causing delay), whilst an involuntary submerging (from knockback or telekinesis or the like) would send him into a paralytic panic. Possibly Psychotic: Altering his dimensions (dimensional form array) tends to scramble his brain if sustained for long, leading to suspiciousness and eventually to psychotic symptoms (see below). Zero: Captain Cosmos could plausibly eliminate all his dimensions; essentially a zero-dimensional form, thus ceasing (temporarily) to exist at all. GM A high-rise apartment on 64th Street, overlooking Liberty Park March 15th, 8 PM Miss Tricia Thorne, head of the Thorne Foundation, socialite and all around rich woman had it all. She was young, she was beautiful, she was popular, and she was so very rich. And she was a good person, too! At only 20, she had started the Thorne Foundation after her parents died tragically in a skiing accident in Norway, using both her own money and donations to help whatever cause was most in at the moment, whatever would get her the most headlines and recognition for her effort to and attempts to help everyone! This evening, the beautiful young blonde, now just 25 years old, was hosting a gala for the rich and famous, with all proceeds from the evening going to aid the refugees of the Middle-East. It might not be the hottest and most in topic right now, but Tricia Thorne was bringing it back! And of course, she had informed all the media, from TV stations to bloggers, and even some of the people that still worked on those old newspapers and magazines! See, Tricia wanted to be inclusive of everyone! The gala was held in the 64th street apartment. Well, apartment was putting it lightly. It was quite a large place, with her owning several of the upper floors, including the huge ballroom at the very top floor. A multitude of round tables were placed around the room now, with an overly large see through trophy in the middle of the room. While it was slightly golden in color, it was clearly just made of glass. It was filled with money, mostly as a publicity stunt. A staircase led to the top of the trophy, where any of the rich and famous could walk up to throw their money in, which was of course just symbolic of their actual donations. Or so they said. Camera crews surrounded the area, which was by now filled with people. There was a slight lull in the festivities now that the main dish had been finished, while they waited for Miss Tricia Thorne, dressed in a beautiful black dress to symbolize her sorrow at the plight of the refugees, to make a speech. Well, once she finished talking with the handsome young man at her table. And one such guest from the media was one Buddy Brand.
