Freedom City

April 7th, 2020

9:37AM Local Time

Muirne wore a light blue t-shirt, a knee length black skirt with navy blue leggings beneath it. She held a charcoal grey jacket with a fluffy collar in her arms forgotten despite the cold wind as she swivelled rapidly, taking in the sights, wonder in her eyes- This was Freedom City? It looked like something from one of those 'science fiction' shows or films she'd watched. The shining trains suspended in the air on their tracks, the planes flying overhead, the towering buildings. She nearly walked into a tall man in a suit, but she danced out of the way, apologising sweetly. She turned to her escort, "This place is amazing, like something from a movie or a dream! Is this really where I will be going to school?" She pranced ahead again.

She looked at her map on her phone, trying to figure out how to get to the school. Her face morphed quickly between excitement, then to confusion, then to embarrassment, before she looked back to her escort a sheepish smile on her face, "I uh, I can't figure out how we're getting there, my phone is being weird. Could I have some help?"

Dee Farrington had followed alongside Muirne after the pair had exited the British consulate in Freedom City, wearing a pair of dark sunglasses in addition to her more standard dress of dark jeans, a red T-shirt and black leather jacket. While she was more accustomed to the sights of the city, she still smiled at Muirne’' excitement in seeing the city for the first time. "Well, not right in the city, but near enough." The Englishwoman replied.

When Muirne stopped and asked for help with her phone, Dee came up and looked down at the device with the teenager. Considering the redheaded teen had been born during the Dark Ages and had spent over 1,300 years in some form of suspended animation, it was not unsurprising that she still had some trouble with modern technology. All in all, Dee thought she had done a rather good job at learning to use some technology thus far.

"Les see…well, the map function is trying to work out the best way for us to get there as it is some distance from here." Dee said with a small smile. "Rather than trying to figure out subways and buses today, there is a much easier way to get there." The Englishwoman continued as she pointed to a small icon on the screen. "We will just take an Uber."

Muirne nodded, tapping on the icon and letting Dee guide her through the app. She'd been getting better at using the device, but she hadn't forgotten about what she'd done to the first one when a preset alarm had gone off. She frequently had to ask for help, which thankfully Dee was more than capable of providing. She put in the details, and shortly after the car turned up. She sat glued to the window, staring out at the city as they crossed the bridge. She couldn't help but grin as she thought that she'd be living here.

She loved London, but this was amazing.

Finally they pulled up in front of the campus, and she almost bolted out of the car. The school loomed over her, as she stared up at the building. Her smile stayed on her face as she turned, waiting for Dee to catch up, almost bouncing on the spot.

The car ride had taken the pair along the southern end of downtown Freedom City, crossing over the South River on the Pramas Bridge, from which Muirne had been able to spot the towering form of Sentry Statute which stood at the very eastern end of the peninsula on which downtown Freedom City sat.

Across the river they had passed through the clearly affluent neighborhood of Bayview, with its large homes. Their destination was located in the foothills known as Bayview Heights, on a large private estate sounded by wooded acreage. As they slowly passed the grand front entrance of the school, Dee looked out the window and was reminded of the many schools her parents had sent her during her school years, schools she had often gotten herself thrown out of. But the Englishwoman put those thoughts behind her, remembering that the reasons Muirne would be coming here were very different than why her parents had shunted her off to the various boarding schools around England.

Dee and Muirne exited their Uber at the main entrance, its central section vaguely resembling a castle gatehouse, and the wings that extended to either side very similar in style to old country estates in England. Waiting for the two inside the gatehouse was a woman in a finely tailored dark grey business suit with a high necked white blouse. Her raven black hair was pulled up into an elegant bun, away from her sharp features. Although she was in her late-forties, she had an athletic frame and stood with perfectly poised posture.

"Good morning Lady Farrington, I am so pleased to finally meet you in person." The woman said as Dee and Muirne approached. "And you must be Muirne." She added, focusing her attention on the teenager. "I am Callie Summers, headmistress here at Claremont Academy."

"A pleasure to finally meet you face-to-face as well Headmistress Summers." Dee responded, shifting to the more formal English manners she typically avoided using.

"While I am sure there are many questions you both have about Claremont and the coursework here, I have arranged for a tour of the campus guided by one of our graduating Seniors that should help to address many of them." Headmistress Summers continued.

Muirne bowed, "Good morning Síþwíf1 Summers. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, I am Muirne. I look forward to coming here, your school is amazing. You must be very proud." She straightens, smiling brightly. "Thank you for the opportunity to visit. I hope I'm not interrupting anything for the student."

"Nothing he's not able to reschedule."  Kam answered as he joined the Headmistress and others.  "Kameron Kingdom at your service."  he introduced with a shallow bow, "Welcome Lady Farrington."  The young man greeted formally and with an awareness of the traditions of the british courts unusual for an american, though his accent suggested he was not tive as well.  Regardless while he knew the accord to be given her title he seemed otherwise unaware of her specifically.

He turned then seamlessly to the incoming student, "And you must be Muirine."  he welcomed as well.  "I go by Kam among friends."  he suggested with an easy conspiratorial smile and nod and awaited the Headmistress leave to begin the tour.

Muirne started slightly at Kam's sudden appearance, but recovered quickly. "Yes I am Muirne, it's nice to meet you, Kam." Her accent is a strange mixture of Dee's English one and the accent of a Freedom City native. "Thank you for being willing to take the time to help me." She smiles back, her eyes bright with enthusiasm.

"Thank you Kameron, a pleasure to meet you." Dee replied with a small smile to the student that had arrived to provide the tour of the campus, for the moment staying with a more formal tone. While the young man’s etiquette was not exactly expected, there was the fact that Claremont Academy did seem to draw some of its student body from beyond the United States.

Headmistress Summers gave Kam a small smile before turning back to Muirne and Dee. "Well, you will be in good hands with Mr. Kingdom. We will have a chance to speak some more after the tour." She stated, giving Kam a small nod.

"Thank you Síþwíf Summers. It was a pleasure meeting you." Muirne bowed again as the headmistress left. She straightened again, turning to Kam. "Lead the way, I'll follow along." Her smile was a bit smaller now, mainly due to her face muscles getting tired.

She walked up to stand a comfortable distance from her tour guide.

Àjàṣorò was allegedly still being punished, by doing something she genuinely enjoyed. Meeting new people was the part of the superhero job she’d loved doing the most, she wondered if the Headmistress knew that and that's why she’d been told to do this tour.

Sorry I’m late.” she turned and smile at Kamau “Hello little brother, I’m here to help you do what you can’t managed on your own. As usual.”

She stepped forward and offered a hand to the new student, she always found the English rather reserved and stuffy so a hug would probably be a bit to much.

I’m Àjàṣorò Kingdom, though Sara will do just fine, and this is my younger twin brother.” she nudged her brother as she spoke.

Muirne blinked in surprise, but was less startled than at Kam's sudden appearance. She met the taller girl's eyes. "Oh hello it's no problem, Síþwíf Summers just left so you haven't missed anything." She smiles warmly at the introduction. "It's nice to make your acquaintance. I'm Muirne Sceadusangere it's-" she paused for a moment, "younger twin brother? How does that work?" She looked between them curiously, before looking up at the looming school. "Should we get started?"

"Indeed."  Kam agreed with Dee readily as he prepared to lead Muirne to the first destination, "Though you are welcome to come along if it is more comfortable for your,"  he paused just a fraction of a second as he sussed out the relation, "Ward."  he finished with a nod.  Just in time for his sister to arrive in her usual fashion.

"Àjàṣorò, where would i be without your council yes."  he replied dryly and glanced to Murines confusion, "Our birth is the singular event in our lives she has been prompt in her attendance."  he explained readily flashing a teasing smile at his sister.  "The school grounds are secluded and secure you needn't worry about stray eyes." he began as he moved the group on toward the central quad that served in many ways as the social heart of the campus.

"A pleasure to meet you Àjàṣorò." Dee said with a small smile. "And please call me Dee, now that we no longer have to be concerned with formalities." The Englishwoman said to Kam as the twins prepared to start the tour.

At Kam's offer for her to join the tour, Dee gave a small nod. "Thank you, I was wanting to get a look as well." She stated. "Need to report back to…some of the others back home that wish to learn more about where we will be sending Muirne." Starting after the three teens, Dee stayed a short distance behind in order to be a little less of an authoritative presence.

As a wise old man once said I generally turn up exactly when needed!” she grinned at her brother, this was an old argument between the two

And pleased to meet you both, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the tour, my brother does an excellent job of such things.”

She stepped to one side and made a sweeping gesture for her brother to continue, only half joking about his competence. Well maybe a third, he was family after all so was more than competent at everything.

There are some interesting students here, I’m sure your enjoy meeting some of them.”

Muirne chuckled at the pair's good natured bickering, her eyes bright with mirth. Muirne had to move quickly to keep up as the pair had much longer legs, but she was used to it. She wasn't even tall when she'd grown up, and people were a lot taller on average now.

She hummed quietly to herself as she looked with interest at the enormous campus. It was larger than her village and everyone here was like her, she wouldn't be alone. She nodded cheerfully as Sara talked. "I look forward to seeing them."

Speaking of 'interesting students', Janus was lounging on the steps leading to the quad with lazy boredom. As the tour group exited for the quad, Janus rose to their feet with the limber grace of a swordsman. The teenager was a senior now, finishing their last year and had added inches and lean muscle since starting at Claremont.

"Kam, haven't you earned enough extra credits, yet? Or are you such a shining example that you're automatically roped into being the school's best foot forward?" Janus teased. Their voice was a melodic tenor with a faint accent that was a bit difficult to place. Janus wore their hair pulled back and loosely braided. The brilliant pink looked like it had to be a dye job, but it wasn't. The bright violet eyes were equally natural as unnatural as they might have looked and Janus was cheeky enough to wink one at the adult standing behind the teens. "Afternoon, Àjàṣorò. Lady Farrington."

Janus inclined their head politely, offering a slight bow to those that they already knew and a slight smile before politely introducing themself to Muirne. "Janus Danger. Are you attending Claremont or just taking the grand tour?"

Posted

Muirne watched Janus move closely, her curiosity piqued by their fluid motion. As they approached she realised just how much shorter she was than them, and began to wonder if every boy at this school was like that. She looked up at their bright hair, and met their purple eyes, her green ones following the conversation with interest as the newcomer teased Kam. She smiled at them as they introduced themselves, bowing slightly herself. "It's nice to meet you Janus, I'm Muirne Sceadusangere. I am currently just taking the tour, although I will be coming here at the start of the next schooling year."

"I believe the quote is 'Precisely when he means to' Which is not really the same thing at all."  Kam corrected his sister playfully.  With a  sweep of his arm he presented the bustling central quad looking over Muirne's reaction he paused and gestured to the far right corner,   "North lies along that corner."  he offered to help her center her bearings.    "The quad is the school commons,"  he explained concisely, "A good place to meet people and arrange to meet up before study groups or a visit to the Gym."  the tall boy explained hoping the terminology  carried through.  "People like Janus scion of the Danger family."  he offered as the androgynous student introduced themselves.

"I would think a Danger of all people would know there is no such thing as enough."  Kam replied in kind to Janus taunts.  "But the headmistress does like to put the best foot forward."  He returned his attention to Muirne and gestured to the surrounding buildings, "Administration is in the wing behind us, cafeteria on the southwest wing, most of the rest is classrooms."  He paused and gestured to the west and north corners in turn.  "Library and the auditorium, there will be a presentation there at the beginning of the year."   The initial layout explained he gave Muirne a few moments to socialize and take it all in.

Muirne nodded along with the explanation, quickly scrawling his instructions down on a pad of paper, and drawing a small diagram of the school next to it. She quietly hummed a tune to herself as she adds a note in the margin about the presentation. After writing the notes stops, scanning the quad and the students in it. She found her eyes drawn to a boy flying overhead. She watched as a trail of sparkling glitter trailed behind him as he flew, and felt a pang of envy at the joy of his power. The dust slowly settled, and she reached out to catch some, as it glittered golden in the air. It sparkled at her in her hand, as she tried to set the envy aside. Her power was hers, shadows and all, and it wasn't fair to herself or the pretty flying boy to want his power.

She hummed a bit louder.

The pretty boy flew overhead, golden dust trailing behind. Why walk, when you could fly, after all? He slowed down, looking down, his already smiling face truly breaking into a grin as he noticed the group. He dropped abruptly, falling, until he stopped a short distance away, making a quick little bow, his feet never touching the ground.

"Hel-lo everyone, good to see you!" He spoke with a noticeable accent, but not one that really stood out as coming from anywhere in particular. It was like he was talking English, and yet not quite, like something was actually helping him be understood, almost like an instant translation. He waved quickly at Cam, Aja and Janus. "You must be new, a pleasure to meet you! I am Pan the Forever Boy!"

Muirne hadn't been expecting the boy she'd been watching to fly down and talk! He hovered there, cheerfully greeting her after she'd been staring at him, filled with envy, wishing she had his powers instead of his own and she couldn't help the shame that washed over her, how disgusted he would be if he could read her thoughts. She smiled nervously at him, "H- hello, I'm Muirne. I'm currently on a tour, I'm starting next year. It's a pleasure to meet you too!" She realised that she was still holding some of the dust he'd sprinkled as he flew and her face flushed with embarrassment, she let the dust fall off her hand, and then hid her sparkling palm behind her back. Now that she looked at him he couldn't be much older than her, physically at least. "Tyge úre sylfum gecliht1, Muirne!" She whispered to herself, although not quiet enough that people couldn't hear her.

"So uh, why are you called the Forever Boy?" She asked, trying to get past the awkwardness she felt.

<"No need to be so hard on yourself."> Pan replied, speaking the same old language that Muirne had the moment before, the same grin still on his lips. If he noticed that she held some of the golden dust, he didn't seem to show it.

He laughed lightly at the question, bent slightly into his knees and held his arms out to the side, as if he was presenting himself. "Well, because I am a forever boy, I suppose." He sounded amused at the question, as well as his answer. "A title from back home, I suppose. One with meaning, one with promise." He paused briefly, as if he was giving his answer great thought, then resumed his full attention on Muirne. "But, what about you, what can you do? What is your secret name?"

Posted

The instant Muirne realised that Pan understood what she said her blush darkened, "Þ- þú mælan fyrndagas englisc1?" She asked, knowing the answer, but still compelled to ask the question. At his explanation of being 'a forever boy' she began to eye him with curiosity and no small amount of hope. "When- er, where are you from?" She some of that hope creeping into her voice.

At Pan's question her mood fell slightly, "My uh baldor2 name is Shadowborne. I have a link to a different dimension that lets draw power from it to transform myself, or teleport to that dimension." She inwardly cringed as she remembered the time she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror after an involuntary transformation. That hadn't been a good day.

"Hello Pan."  Kam greeted with a smile as the boy floated down to join them.  He was fond of the puckish teen despite himself, they did not approach life in the same way but Pan was charming no denying that and had passion for, well everything he did, which Kan could appreciate.

"Pan is from another realm, another dimension."  He explained readily, "We have several students originating in worlds like but unlike our own."  Kam continued trying not to be too lecturing in his tone but he did love to share knowledge.  Likely part of why he often took on this task for new arrivals.  "The smith sisters come from a darker world than Pan, more like our own before some catastrophe that led them here eventually."  He shrugged the refugees hadn't been all that forthcoming with their own origins, "Janus as well hails from a more fantastical realm but has oft visited our own."

Kam continued the tour heading west toward the library knowing Pan and Janus would happily follow if their curiosity was piqued, he had a schedule to keep after all if only one he set himself.   "As I mentioned the library is this way."  he pointed as they moved across the quad, "In addition too many resources for study they also have group spaces to meet and discuss material from classes or have a more social study group, or should your roommate prove distracting from studies."  the last with a hint of personal emphasis.

"My father's from this dimension. Mother is from Fortuna," Janus replied easily, like that wasn't an absolutely bizarre statement. "We've always summered here on Prime anyways. You'll likely end up in an interdimensional jaunt before your sophmore year's over. You get used to it. Hullo, Pan."

Janus nodded politely to the floating boy. Despite the presence of an adult, Janus lazily pointed towards one of the rooftops as they filled in the information that Janus clearly felt was more important and excluded from Kam's mini-lecture, "If you're going to sneak out, there's a few rooftops that are a bit easier to sail over the gate from. Fliers always have the easiest time sneaking off campus but the rest of us find ways to manage. Dorms are still gendered, as outdated an idea as that is. The assumption in hetero-normative behavior means its a bit easier to make time for hook ups if you're not straight, frankly, but everyone manages to find a way for dates and what not, if you're interested in those. The food is really quite decent and they've not been thrown off by anyone's odd dietary needs yet. If you're beyond the skills of the teachers in an area, they'll find a mentor for you. It's not common but it happens."
