Baz smiled back at Lawrence, and then shot from the hip with cockroach hands. Shot an imaginary bullet from an imaginary pistol. 

 

"Told ya, partner. I got yer back!"

 

Lawrence was about the only person who knew Baz outside his family. About the only person who knew, or had seen, the radioactive tears of pain behind the joker. Was there anyone Baz trusted more?

 

He gave a merry wave to the universe as he departed. 

 

"Tune in next week, same Buzz time, same Buzz channel! Lets go, amigos!"

Vueriz stumbled her way over to Lawrence after the Praetorians left, her Skyboard set to follow her. This had been so far beyond her, enemies that might have crawled from her darkest nightmares, phenomena that would have been beyond the bleeding edge of technology even if they weren't illegal to experiment with, and a fight that had tested her from every angle. 

 

But no one had died. She had to focus on that. She had to focus on that until she could crawl into a secluded place and cry. She didn't know how the others did it, how they could all smile and keep going after all of this. Still, she had to do the same. Giving up would be so uncool.

Once the Praetorians were through the portal Lawrence remained focused on it for a few moments, then gave a slight smile. "Our friends are through and back home. Let's get out of here." He said to the others gathered around him, reaching up and pulling his hands back toward him. As he did so, the portal moved towards the group, wrapping around them as Centennial Circle and the gathered Freedom League faded from view.

 

For a brief moment the group felt as if they were being propelled forward at tremendous speed. Then the sensation stopped, and they found themselves standing in the Quad back in the winter air at Claremont. Their bags and other luggage were lying on the ground and standing off to one side where the older students and Iris and Daniel, all apparently safe and sound….
