Rita Kord Dormitories, Fourth Floor

Claremont Academy, Freedom City, New Jersey

Saturday, September 7, 2024

It was almost the start of a new school year at Claremont Academy! Of course, that meant that the weekend before the start of classes was for students (both old and new) to move into the dorms. As might be expected, that meant the campus was rather abuzz with activity, as students and their families descended on the two dormitories. Thankfully, the mostly cloudy sky ensured that the weather was warm and pleasant for the move in.

Up on the fourth floor of the Rita Kord dormitory, Juniors Mizuki Iwasaki and Vueriz were two of the older students that had been asked to assist new students and their parents with getting to their rooms or answering other questions they might have….

Mizuki "Torpedo Lass" Iwasaki

"Hey V! Ya ready yet?" She shouted, dressed in the Claremont athletic uniform, but tweaked to match her penchant for a nautical theme... someone in one of the labs noticed it was a close resemblance to a alumni of the school who fell out of communication fairly soon after graduating, but it didn't bother Mizuki at all. She wanted to stand out, but dressed in her actual costume might be too much of a distraction, but being the buoyant bulwark of Claremont and starting to make literal waves in the city is starting to make her a well known face, and in the schools colors it's sure to impress the parents. Almost a second costume for Mizzy. The added vest for lifeguard work that she got drafted into for the school year she didn't mind either. High visibility goldenrod never bothered her.

She stretched herself out and hopped on the tips of her toes. It didn't bother her one bit her roommate was a cryothermic alien from another world. She stopped counting the Kelvin when she stopped feeling it. "I'm heading to the common area. I'll try to answer any questions they got so you can just control traffic to their rooms. Or we can both meet up. I'm sure everyone wants to meet ya too!"

Mizuki started to hover off the floor outside their dorm. "Odd we got drafted to be the heads of this operation... but not lookin' to dissapoint."

Grinning she headed for the common area near the stairway, where surely there'll be a crowd forming soon. She missed out on the first gathering of the beginning of last year. Not this time. She had her orders.

There was one returning girl who had specifically not been asked to help new students. It was the opposite of the well-meaning Mizuki, and a mirror to someone in the other dorm.

Sam Durado was not helping anyone with anything, though she was at least staying out of the way. Like Mizuki she was floating over the other students, but she was doing it to relax, drinking soda and spying down on others. She had underlighted her long brown hair with green streaks for now in her regular, not Claremont uniform. A black T-Shirt with an eagle grabbing a rattlesnake, and jeans.

Mizuki knew Sam at least a little; the problematic student who was also Michael's best friend and had all his powers. She wasn't actively a bad person, but she also had a habit of not really liking the new friends Michael had made.

"Hello Hall Monitor." she waved at Mizuki. "How's work going? You want something to drink?" she asked, offering a soda from the cooler below her. "All this chaos has to be getting on your nerves, and I'd love to help one of Mikey's friends." She did seem to be being nice at least, even if she really wasn't helping the situation by clogging up the hallway. "How was your break? Do anything fun?"

"Hall Monitor... that's new... Might be straight and narrow but I'm no snitch. They want me an' V to play stewardess." She said rolling her eyes a little.

She smirked, taking a seat near Sam. "Well other than doing a f-ton of community interest PSAs with the Coast Guard regarding water safety... jeez talk about on the nose for me..., the lifeguard job, discovering I can fly, Oh... and still managing to have some free time to do a little storm chasing in the Atlantic... And still getting shot down by a hotshot pilot online in one of my simulator games... nothing much to report."

Mizuki waves off the offer. "I'll take one of those Dews in the cooler. Haven't had my poison in a while."

She leans forward. "Just sucks though how my powers decided to have a growth spurt. Can't even feel the temperature in the room... everything feels... neutral. Even when I get a hit of the cooling stuff they gave V so she's not sweating to death. Gave V a scare when I stopped breathing for 3 hours while sleeping, seems my body just likes to take a big breath and hold unless I need to talk. Lungs are just fancy swim bladders for me now. Makes dives easier though. Saw my metaphysician again... even he's stumped how I'm developing beyond the last girl to have my name. And I supposedly had her powers."

"Something about 'my personal mutation template expressing itself alongside the donor's template' in his exact words..."

"Oh yeah, I saw you on the TV a couple of times. A rising starlet! Maybe you'll get to be in a Baywatch reboot or something? Or maybe they'll make you a G.I. Joe? Sure there's The Patriot but there's always room for another Hero to take up that 'American as Apple Pie' hitch, right? Especially when you're swimmy instead of land-based." She grinned. She reached over but didn't produce a Dew. These were clearly brought from Sampson's, where she worked, and she presented her with something like a Mountain Dew but much higher quality, a special with a silly name.

"And yeah! I noticed that! I didn't think you could fly before, so I was wondering if your vest had some kind of anti gravity thing or whatever like Veuriz's board. So you just...kinda mutated into being able to fly huh? That's craazy. My powers didn't change at all, just got bigger! So who knows what you'll get next." she clapped as she thought about it, leaning back.

"Interesting what your doctor said though. So he thinks you had powers before you got the original TL's? And then getting hers, what, jumpstarted you getting yours? Like some sort of reccessive metagene or something? Crazy coincidence...but lucky. And it seems like they're working together nice; giving you stuff that works well together instead of fighting to split you in half, if you don't need to breathe as much and can fly and swim fast, you'll be bouncing all over the oceans and the skies before too long" she grinned and took a big swing of her drink.

"You make sure to keep all those boys in their place this year, huh? Michael and Parker and Lawerence; if you're getting twice the power dose you should be able to really show them up sometimes, I'm rooting for you."

"The vest?" She pulls the toggle on her vest puffing it up. She forgot it wasn't her costume's dive vest and nothing more than a life preserver... But she didn't care at this point. "Only time it makes me fly is if I'm underwater." She said laughing, patting the vest before taking the store soda, but knowing the store brands from Sampson's... tastier. "As for MY stuff... it was probably the stresses on my body when I got brushed by that death-ray or whatever that put the Original TL in a pack. Her powers got transferred to me, but the trauma of the event probably caused what I was going to have pop off eventually to start worming through as well. Less two separate things moving in tandem and more two things merging... Something about 'manifold spacetime manipulation' or something sci-fi sounding. He theorized with my development I might actually be spaceworthy."

She takes a sip. "Yep... Love this store brand. Actually doesn't taste as sweet but the flavor... Love it." She said with a grin, leaning back. "Crap... got so busy this summer... I still owe Lawrence a nice little vacay in the highlands of Scotland... always wanted to see all the castle ruins and landscapes and stuff. Seesh... lookit' me, Born in Hawaii, living in New Jersey, and pinin' for ol' Scotland."

"But ya, Mike, Park, and Lawrence are teddy bears. Once ya get to know them." She looked up. "They're 'Ohana... family... Man... I need to learn Hawaiian."

"Spaceworthy huh? Fly up to the moon and not have to deal with all the pressure. That seems like it'd be nice to have a little peace and quiet. Especially compared to all the rambunctiousness that comes with a typical Claremont day, or week. or year." she noted. "Still...combo set powers is a nice pull, if you have to take one good thing out of the whole situation, even if you'd rather not have it. And who knows where you'll end up given enough time. Maybe all the way beyond the stars, to infinity and beyond." Sam said, grinning.

"And yeah, Sampsons' is great. It's still fun to work there, I guess. It gets me paid, at least, so I can't complain too much about the work, I guess. It's nothing as cool as working with the coast guard or stuff like that. Can't say I did much of anything over the summer." but she got a little frosty at the response at the end.

"I know Mikey is a teddy bear. I've known him longer than you, you know." she said with a little chill. "Even if we aren't always at the same place anymore."

"Very nice uniform, see I can be a trendsetter!" the owner of the voice was a woman in her apparent thirties, dressed in a conservative pantsuit

"I'm just bringing my daughter here for her first day..." she gestured with a small, confused-looking ginger cat in her hands. "Not the cat, obviously, though I guess you can never tell in a place like this!"

A slightly embarrassed teen stepped around, dressed in a baggy Freedom City hoodie and jeans.

"I'm sorry my Mom never got a chance to study here, so apparently she's living vicariously through me!" she looked back to her mom, who with all her maturity stuck her tongue out at her daughter "Anyway pleased to meet you all I'm Kate!"

The elevator doors slid open, and a slender young woman strolled out. Her dark brown hair was cut in a severe bob, her bright brown eyes shone from an ochre face. She wore a retro-style dress, cinched at the waist and hemmed below the knee, the fabric an expensive-looking deep red with a sunflower-yellow floral design. Over the top she'd thrown a white blazer, and in her hand she held an enormous old-style leather case, the straps bulging at the seams. Despite the visible weight of it, it didn't seem to be troubling her overly much.

She casually walked up to the slowly growing group, inclining her head and giving a dazzling white smile. "Good morning," she said, in an English accent refined enough to slice glass, "My name is Annie Jones." Annie set the case down on the floor with an audible heavy thud, before going to shake hands. "Pleasure to meet you, girls."

Kadene Estime, late of the boys dorm, slid in through the open common room window. After flying up from the ground. In an enclosed space, this was not quiet. She did not appear to care, sporting a bold grin in addition to her sword, hat, and general feminine piratical outfit. She curtsied. "Kadene Estime, First Mate of the Luckstorm Pirates. Could one of you point me in the direction of Room Four-Zero-Nine? It's mine."

She smiled at Sam's comments towards her from someone in the back before Centuria's mom spoke up. "Not really a uniform... well it's a modified version of the swimming variant of the athletics one. I prefer a full body suit over a academic swimsuit... I'm pretty much the highest grade student Lifeguard here this year. Thought I'd represent the group. I keep my actual "uniform" in storage unless I plan on doing a sea patrol."

"By the way, girls, we got slots open... always looking for volunteers."

Then Ms. Jones arrived she took her hand when offered, with a firm handshake. "Hey there. Mizuki Iwasaki. People tend to call me either Mizzy or Sailor. Welcome to the nosebleeds."

When Kadene showed up in full pirate garb she was stalled for a moment... enough to skip a thought... "Oh... uh Hi... Um... Right room 4-0-9..." She pulled out her smart phone and pulled up a map. "Ah just down the hall... that way. Port side. Odd numbers port, evens starboard." She finally got her senses about her again. "Kadene, I'm Mizuki, this is Annie, Kate, her Mom, and Sam."

Vueriz was never late. That was something a genius just didn't do. She was simply being... tactical with the timing of her arrival. And fixing a spot of wiring on her latest invention. It would be ready soon... Still it wouldn't do to leave Mizuki to deal with all the newcomers by herself, even if she objected to being selected to play hostess. She was a rebel hero, not some greeting mascot.

Still, very important reasons (excuses) aside, she had to emerge and meet her new floormates eventually, and so she eventually kicked her and Mizuki's dorm door open (she quickly tossed the umbrella that she used to reach the handle aside) wearing a red crop top and some very short cut jeans alongside some combat boots and some welding goggles on her forehead. She had considered dressing more conservatively, but the other girls were going to have to get used to it since even Freedom's coldest winters only barely reached her home world's hottest summers. She was pretty sure she had nearly died over the summer, and the people in her life who payed attention to small details may have noticed over time that her tail had been growing flatter and her ears slightly larger, with very small ridge-like structures over them.

She scampered hurried over to her roommate's side, seeing her surrounded by newcomers (and Sam, who Vueriz approved of for her cool rebel punk style, but wasn't likely to help her much). She heard the last exchange of introductions, and seeing her chance to interject amongst the tall folk, who so often missed her presence being on average nearly two feet taller than her, spoke up. "And I am Vueriz! Alien visitor from a far away galaxy! Down here!"

Mizzy smiled as her roommate popped in. "Yep. V's pretty chill." She said, quirking an eyebrow.

Mizuki was more worried for the cryotherm's health. If the weather in early September was deathly to her, she wanted to make sure Vueriz didn't risk having a trip to the infirmary's special cold room just to recover. "That's my roommate there. Considering I don't feel the cold at all, she can keep herself at a more comfortable climate level for herself without bothering me... speaking of which, everything good, V?"

Dancia was about to reply when she seemed to look off into the middle distance, before glancing at her cell.

"Sorry girls something has come up and I've got to run! Pleasure meeting you all!" with that she quickly ducked out of sight

Kate wasn't overly concerned she was used to such things, besides she'd have to get to know all these people soon enough anyway.

"So looks like we're from quite a wide range of places! I was born in Canada, but I've grown up all my life here in Freedom City!"

"Pearl Harbor, like literally the naval base there was where I was born." She said, grinning. "I'm legit a navy brat. Just moved here to FC little over a year ago after what happened... to my folks."

She cleared her throat for a second, pushing back the memories, taking another drink from the cooler. "To be honest having to remember that people actually have to dress up for the cold now is annoying... I step out with shorts and a T-Shirt in the middle of winter and people are gonna give ya looks."

Vueriz nodded sagely as Mizuki described her as 'chill'. It made sense, Humans averaged nearly sixty degrees Celsius warmer than her own body, it was pretty safe to say most people would find her that way. She gave a confident thumbs up as Mizuki asked after her wellbeing.

As the conversation drifted to where they were from she began to relax before Muzuki hesitated as she mentioned her parents, bringing her own seperation from her family to mind, a fact that she would rather not dwell upon, so she too snatched a drink from the cooler, briefly popping her mask off to take a sip before putting it back on quickly.

"My home planet, Zirtimzar averages about negative forty three degrees Celsius, so it is very nice to have a roommate who can comfortably hang out at those temperatures. Probably don't touch the door too much, I've done what I can to make the room not transmit heat, but over a long period of time it'll still cool below freezing."

"Oh..." Mizuki tosses Vueriz a couple heavy cloth doorknob covers. "That should prevent any skin sticking to the doorknobs. Just slip them on the doorknobs and everything should be fine. One of the administrators handed them to me."

Leaning back, she wondered with a Pirate, an Alien, and the daughter of a highly renowned Superhero was going to produce in surprises this year.

Kadene kept right on grinning. "Aye, hard to port it is." She embarked immediately on that short trip, and thus missed Vueriz's dynamic entry entirely. She was gone just long enough to miss Dancia's departure, but not the sharing of hometowns. She returned sans bag and hat, but not sword. Her dark hair turned out to be in dreadlocks.

Mizuki was a Navy kid, eh? Well, one couldn't help who their parents were, and they were dead besides. Besides, there were more interesting things to think about. Like this small blue creature. She was still full of saucy good cheer as she began speaking. "Well, then! What have we here? Never seen a blue devil before, especially as small as you. Is Zirtimzar in the north, at the bottom of Davy Jones's Locker, or both?" Did she know what a planet was? A good question. Even if she did, the concepts of aliens and other galaxies would be utterly foreign.

While Kadene was taking care of her moving in Mizuki looked over to Annie. "So Annie, whereabouts are you from?" She said, stretching out. "Hopefully it wasn't too far considering that suitcase sounds like it was loaded with cinder blocks."

She stretched out. "Then again you looked like you were handling it fine."

Kate couldn't help but feel how awkward it was to the alien, as an orphan of another world herself she couldn't help but emphasise how hard it could be sometimes.

"We have a... place up near the Arctic Circle. Maybe we can arrange a trip sometime? The cold never bothers me anyway..." realising how that could be taken she added

"Sorry, that wasn't meant as a joke. I've been told I can survive in the depths of space. Not that I've ever been, can't even fly yet!"

Outside

Sarah Francine Thatcher hefted the suitcase her mother had insisted on helping her pack. It wasn’t bulging, but Sarah was certain there was little else she could have squeezed into it. She was the first of her siblings to attend a ‘private school’ and her parents had shown a mix of pride and distress over it, though they tried not to show it. It had been a monumental effort to convince them she didn’t need one, let alone both  of them, to escort her to her new dorm room.

Sarah paused outside the Kord Dormitory, looking up at the impressive building. Other girls passed her, moving into their own rooms. A little ways off, she could see a stream of boys mimicking their own ant-like procession in and out of their dorm.

A well dressed woman in a pantsuit passed her with a young girl in a hoodie in tow. She saw more than a few students slipping in and out of windows on the upper floors and was even more relieved her parents weren’t here right now.

She steeled her nerves and stepped forward to her new and exciting, and not at all terrifying, future as a trained metahuman.

*****

Upstairs

The elevator to the fourth floor chimed once more as a young dirty blonde of average build stepped out into the common area. It was as hectic as she suspected it would be and she did her best to maneuver her suitcase around without running into someone.

She was passing a small group of girls talking. One wore some kind of sailor-girl themed outfit while another was decked out like a pirate. It was the juxtaposition of the two that drew a second glance. Sarah spotted the hoodie girl from outside and another girl floating over a nearby cooler, but it was the little blue creature that captured her attention.

She had never seen anything like it, except maybe that one kids movie from when she was younger she considered. She hadn’t even noticed she had stopped walking as she stood staring impolitely.

"Well, I grew up in London, but my family has homes in Yorkshire and in France," Annie explained casually. "Not to worry; I imagine it's not especially uncommon in this establishment but I... shall we say, I'm somewhat stronger than I appear." She flashed a white smile as she shook Mizuki's hand.

Taking in the hallway, she looked around at the incomers. Truly an eclectic assortment of individuals; she was used to the super-set but Freedom City's famously was more populous diverse than even that of London town's meta demographic. "I must say, I do prefer the American system of one dorm mate. At my former school, there were six of us girls in one room. Good for comradery, but terribly inconvenient for privacy. Rather the point, I suppose. Are any of these girls my new, is it 'room mate' you say here?"

"Room 406, with Sarah." Mizuki said, gesturing to Sarah... it helped that a photo of each student was on the crew manifest for the floor... or at least that was what Mizuki jokingly referred to it as. "Starboard side, bit of a walk."

She giggled a little bit. "Sorry, spent about a week on a Coast Guard cutter as part of my "Summer Post-Secondary" experience. Starting to remember how you couldn't get the sailor outta him, and he was a pilot."

"And someone else whose got the muscles." She said, stretching out. "I hope I get to see what you can do... Of course I might like networking with a few of us. We tried last year, but a lot of our plans got scuttled."

She sighed, turning to Kate. "I could survive as well, problem would be food and water. I... wouldn't encourage anyone to throw me out an airlock."

Vueriz was pretty used to people being surprised at her appearance, but 'blue devil' was a new one. Kinda cool too. She was pretty sure her Translator messed up at the question of where Zirtimzar was because both 'up north' and 'at the bottom of Davy Jones' Locker' were nonsense directions for star navigation. Given it seemed to be having a moment she decided to rely on more simple bodily communication.

She pointed, finger aimed slightly up from straight between her feet. As close as she could physically approximate to the direction of Zirtimzar. "My home planet is that way. Roughly. Haven't- Haven't been able to spot my home galaxy with any telescopes yet. When I do I'll show you a picture."

She looked up at Kate as she offered staying at their place up near the Bear circle. She was pretty sure that would be the north pole, given Opposite to the Bear was the southernmost continent. "I'll keep that in mind, thank you."

It was just after this that she heard the elevator, and turned to find herself the focus of a newcomer's stare. She had grown pretty used to getting stared at over the months since she came to Earth, although that didn't make it feel great or anything. Still, she supposed she should say something before this got awkward. "You okay?"

Nailed it.

Kadene mentally shrugged. Her world had islands in the sky, too. Galaxy was a word she simply didn't know, so she assumed it was another word for archipelago. As for planet, she must've meant island. There weren't any other planets people could live on, everyone knew that. That, or the tiny blue girl was insane. Either way, likely to be fun. "I'll look forward to it. A word in my Captain's ear, though, and I think we could do better than a mere painting. There must be ways to sail the skies, if your people made it from here to your home."

Like Vueriz, she turned to the newcomer "Oiiii. Girly. Aquivan to-wait, you have a different name for this world don't you? Anyway, I know we're pretty, but close your mouth before a fly gets in."

And Mizuki, well. Coast Guard sounded suspiciously Naval. Didn't like that. "Water isn't a problem when you can make it rain or hail on command." Throw out she understood fine, it was *airlock* she didn't have context for. How did someone *lock* air? It was probably a strange word for maroon. "Still, no need to borrow trouble. It'll come or not."
