Description: Calvin is a slight of build, His dark hair is worn short and his eyes are a deep blue that border on purple in certain light. He usually wears jeans, a black hoodie over a solid colored shirt (usually black, dark blue or dark green) (hood worn up) and sneakers.

When he’s out on the street he wears his black hoodie (hood worn) up, a pair of khaki cargo pants, sneakers black fingerless gloves and a dark trenchcoat. His staff is seven feel long made of oak and has several runic carvings that Calvin did himself, every magic user needs a staff and Calvin uses his as a weapon rather than a focus for his spells.

History: Calvin’s history begins with his mother, Molly Parker. Molly was a sophomore at Freedom City University when she was assigned Tabitha Lawrence as a roommate. The two got along very well and there was a slight mutual attraction; Tabitha was openly gay and Molly was still coming to terms with her own sexuality. It was part of this confusion that led to a fight with her parents; they demanded she switch rooms when they learned Molly was rooming with “one of those people.†When Molly retorted that she may be “one of those people†her parents went ballistic citing a bad influence and poor judgment.

Molly hung up angry and hurt and wanting to relax hit the club scene and proceeded to get thoroughly drunk. In her inebriated state she was picked up by a guy she was dancing with; she mentioned that she wasn’t even sure if she liked guys and he replied “only one way to find out,†She awoke the next morning with a horrible hangover next to someone she didn’t know. The events of last night only a haze, Molly quickly dressed and returned home.

A few weeks later she found out that the one night stand to see if she liked guys resulted in much more then she anticipated; she was pregnant.

Tabitha found her on the floor of their room sobbing and went to comfort her friend, holding her close and telling her everything will be okay and that she’ll be there to see Molly through this to the end. True to her word, Tabitha went through the classes with Molly and their mutual attraction blossomed into mutual affection.

On June 24th Molly gave birth to Calvin Lawrence Parker, naming him after her favorite comic character and the woman she loved.

After college with a gift loan from Tabitha’s parents they were able to start their own bookstore and a small house.

Calvin didn’t find anything odd about having two mothers, for one thing it was easier to find one of them (just calling out mom instead of having to call out two parental titles) and they both gave him love and attention.

Not surprising he took an early interest in books and read anything he could get his hands on. His favorite characters were always the wizards, sorcerers and witches and he longed to be like Gandalf, Rincewind, Merlin and the Haliwell sisters. He played Magic and role playing games, computer games that let him be a wizard, he watched TV shows and movies about Witches and Wizards and hoped that maybe an owl would come for him.

There was one book in the bookstore that Calvin was drawn to, a large grimoire that was kept locked behind a glass case, for display only and not for sale; and certainly not for Calvin to read.

The books became his sanctuary from the bullies at school. He was picked on, teased and beat up because his parents were gay. In an effort to teach him to defend himself Molly and Tabitha enrolled him in self defense classes but that just made the bullies try harder. His only friend through school was Madison Harris, a girl in his class that liked the quiet boy who endured the teasing and taunting and read a lot. She would sit with him at lunch, play magic and other card games with him, content to be in his presence even though he didn’t say much and hid his face in his hood.

Overall he was content. He got along with his parents, he enjoyed the company of his friend read a lot and he could endure the teasing and bullying at school.

That all changed his senior year.

It was a cold October afternoon, the 28th to be exact, a date that would be etched in his mind permanently. He was walking home when he felt the presence of something emanating from his house. It was the same feeling he felt when he walked by the brownstone on Dikto Street and the one time he saw Seven of the Next Gen up close.

There was magic in his house.

Calvin crept up to the ajar door and peered in, he heard a male voice demanding where the book was hidden. Dripping his knapsack and slipping inside he saw a man in black wearing a white hood and cape, holding a wand in one hand and extending his other hand out as if he were gripping someone. Tabitha was hovering in midair, grasping at her throat as if someone or something was choking her.

“You won’t talk? Then die!†the man snarled pointed the wand at her and spoke a word. A bright flash of red light shot out from the wand and hit her in the chest. She stopped struggling and fell to the kitchen floor.

“Mom!†Calvin cried racing toward her and stopping as the mage turned to face him. He could see into the living room where Molly lie on the ground. “Mom?†Calvin said taking a hesitant step toward Molly, his voice full of panic.

The mage looked between the two women, “Two mothers? Tsk tsk; those abominations will sully this world no more. Now, do you know where the book is or should I send you to meet them?

Calvin’s attention turned to the mage, who had leveled the wand at him. Calvin leapt out of the way as the mage spoke and the red beam of light shot out of the wand. He ducked behind the island, fear like he’d never felt before and burning anger filling him. Using the island as a shield he dashed into the living room, narrowly dodging another bolt of energy and grabbing the fire poker.

He put his back against the wall and as the mage stepped into the room, swung out and clocked him across the face. The mage yelped in surprise and pain and Calvin dashed past him upstairs, slamming the door shut. He could hear the mage yell something and thump up the stairs.

Calvin wasted no time and went out the window, climbing down the side of the house (falling really) and running to the store. He made it in record time and told everyone to get out, the store was closed. The employees recognized him and he ignored their questions as he shooed them out. Then he saw the book.

The mage had wanted a book. Without thinking Calving grabbed a stapler and shattered the glass case. If the mage wanted it then it must be magical like he thought it was and there must be something that Calvin could use to stop him.

Calvin opened the book and felt something surge into him, unlocking something inside him that was tucked away. He felt like never before as Knowledge filled his head; how to cast spells, arcane lore and that there was nothing to be afraid of.

As he stood up he heard an explosion come from the door, and the mage stood his rage barely contained. Calvin, brimming with power lifted a hand and said one word “Outâ€Â. Magical force rushed forward knocking the mage out of the doorway, to the street and into the path of a passing car.

Calvin stepped out of the shop, flinging the prone mage into the air and letting him drop. The mage lifted the wand, his hand trembling and with a gesture Calvin destroyed in. He spoke, his voice echoing and reverberating with a dozen other voices, “You broke into my home, killed my mothers and attempted to steal what isn’t yours. You will never be able to use your dark magics to hurt anyone else again.â€Â

Calvin gestured again and the mage turned into a rabbit, a wire cage quickly forming out of thin air to contain him. The energies from the book subsided leaving Calvin exhausted and he passed out in the street.

He woke up in the hospital, Madison and her mother by his side. He couldn’t remember what happened. He was told that someone broke into his home and the bookstore, that his parents were gone and so was the grimoire that Tabitha was so proud of and that he was found outside the shop with a rabbit in a cage.

That last point shook the memories, he remembered the magic. He could do the magic. He didn’t need to gesture or speak, but it was easier to do so. He lay in bed, not speaking letting Madison hold his hand.

He took the rest of the week off of school for the Funeral, he inherited everything. His grandparents (Tabitha’s parents) offered to take him in but he wouldn’t have it. They agreed to at least watch him and taken legal custody so he could finish school. He didn’t want to, he wanted to take his new found magic and go out into the world, to stop people from abusing magic and hurting others the way he was hurt.

He sold the house; he couldn’t go back there not with the memory of seeing Tabitha killed and Molly lying on the ground. He moved into the bookstore still contemplating not going back to school. It was Madison that convinced him to come back, to not give up because his parents wouldn’t want him to. He relented; she was his only friend and the last person he had left.

After spending some time figuring out which spells he retained and could cast, he showed Madison what he could do.; the illusions, the invisibility the teleportation. He told her that he wanted to use his magic to do Good. She took his hand and told him he would, but he had to make sure to protect himself too.

Grudgingly Calvin let Madison make a costume, if that’s what it could be called (different pants, and adding gloves and a trench coat). With her help he picked out a staff and went to work carving it, after all Disc World had taught him that every wizard needs a staff. He refused to come up with a hero name “Magic users don’t hide behind Monikers.â€Â

He spends most of his time out of school either at the bookstore or with Madison, the two of them unofficially dating. At night he walks the street, sometimes standing on top of a building using “Vigilance†to find someone in need, other times using “Ghost Walk†to roam around unheard and unseen.

The rabbit he left on the front steps of that Brownstone on Dikto Street, ringing the doorbell before shimmering away. He’s not sure who lives there but he has a feeling the magic user there would have a better use for a mage turned rabbit then he.

Personality & Motivation: Calvin is very quiet and reserved. He uses action where words will do. He keeps to himself and his emotions are best described as “level.†He carries a lot of grief over the loss of his parents and has broken down in tears when it becomes too much for him.

Calvin has a strong dislike for bullies or anyone that uses their powers to push others around and now that he’s able will step in and help. Since gaining his magic he’s had to refrain to use it at school (he has once gotten into a fight and used his Warrior spell to beat the bully up, but that caused him to break down as soon as he realized what he had done)

Villains targeting people with alternative lifestyles also draws his ire, he knew what his parents had between them was special and he firmly believes love and affection do not know gender and everyone is free to choose their own life.

Magic

Calvin’s magic is unique that he doesn’t need to gesture or speak for his spells to work. He does so because it’s familiar somehow and that’s how every other mage does it. Instead of complicated somatic gestures he points or does a quick hand motion, nothing fancy. Paralleling this his spells are a few English words. “Out†knocks his opponent back, “Shimmer†lets him teleport, “Tricycles†sows confusion etcetera. His lack of need to gesture is used as his ace in the hole; for example if bound and gagged he could easily teleport out or send his captor flying.

Relationships

Calvin’s closets (and only) friend is Madison Harris. She’s his age, with reddish-blonde hair and green eyes, slender and athletic. More often than not she’s either in work out sweats or a skirt and blouse. She’s the one source of comfort Calvin has left and she’s stayed by his side for years even more now that he’s been orphaned. She knows he’s still grieving and won’t hesitate to put her arms around him and hold him. Their relationship status is undefined by them, but most of the school thinks they’re dating. She hates that Calvin puts himself at risk but knows there is no persuading him to do otherwise.

Glad to see you were finally able to post :)

Nifty background, lots of plot hooks there.

Please edit your stats so they use the format preferred on this board, not the one used at EN*World's Living Supers game (check the Game Rules thread, or most any of the approved characters,to see what sheets should look like). His Magic array in particular is quite difficult to figure out. I think it's as so:

Magic 8 (PFs: 9 Alternate Powers) [16+9 = 25pp]

BE: Comprehend 4 (speak and understand all languages at once, read any language) ("Speech")

AP: Concealment 6 (all auditory and visual) ("Ghost Walk")

AP: Confuse 8 ("Tricycles")

AP: Enhanced Feats 1 (Rapid Attack) and Enhanced Strength 6 (to 16/+3) and Protection 3 and Super-Speed 1* ("Aspect of the Warrior")

AP: Illusion 3 (all senses; PF: Prgression 2/25-ft. area) ("Veil of Lies")

AP: Paralyze 8 ("Stop")

AP: Super-Senses 14 (Blindsight**, Danger Senses [mystical], Darkvision, Direction Sense, Distance Sense, Extended Normal Hearing, Extended Normal Sight, Scent, Tracking***, Ultra-Hearing) ("Vigilance")

AP: Telekinesis 5 (Str 25; Extra: Range/Perception; PF: Precise) ("Invisible Hand")

AP: Teleport 4 (400 ft./1 mile; Extra: Accurate; PFs: Change Direction, Change Velocity, Easy, Progression 1/200 lbs. cargo) ("Shimmer")

AP: Trip 8 (Extra: Knockback) ("Out")

* This won't work: Super-Speed comes with an Array, which means this'd be an Array within an Array (a "Nested" Array). Those are a no-no.

** You'll need to pick a sense type for this, and depending on what that sense its it may cost less than 4pp.

*** You'll need to pick a sense for the tracking.

Also, keep in mind that without Subtle, your TK is going to be a very visible tractor beam- or GL construct-like effect.

I know you said he doesn't use the complex gestures and chants most other mages use, but if he's prevented from using the simple words & gestures he does use, would that prevent him from using his magic? If he were bound & gagged, or in a null-sound field, could he teleport? Or are the gestures & simple words just 'props', and he can send mooks flying with a nasty glare?

Format Changed. His base effect for magic is actually Trip :)

Added Magical descriptor to blindsight and after looking it over dropped tracking; it didn't mesh well with the rest of the spell. Did I miss an update where Tracking required a sense type?

Nested Array the old foe rears its head (can't believe I didn't realize that) dropped Super Speed in favor of regular speed and add Imp Init and Dodge Focus (which was some how left off in the original file)

Yes the gestures and speech are just a gimmick, his "ace in the hole" if you will. If bound and gagged he could teleport out, go insivible or knock someone across the room :)

So it's a purely magical/mental thing, not based off an existing sense? If so, it should be listed as "Blindsight [accurate radius ranged mental sense]"

Did I miss an update where Tracking required a sense type?[/quiote]

No, it's in the core book itself: "You can follow trails and track using a particular sense."

That works.

Groovy 8-)

Other things:

I only see 3ep of equipment listed (the HQ). The Quarterstaff (another 4) should be listed under Equipment. Is the Costume (which should also be listed under Equipment) like the Undercover Shirt (Protection 2, Subtle, 3 points)?

Dimensional Pocket and his non-arrayed Super-Senses need to be edited for formatting, too. And please bold the names of his powers, it makes it easier for Refs to reference :)

Your Saves seem off, you spent 14 points (not 15), your Fort is +5, and your Will save should be +7.

I just can't do math, I had originally calculate the bookstore at 4ep but (-1 size + 4 features = 3). I hadn't bought the costume as subtle but if it needs to be the ep is certainly there for it. Speaking of I while looking through Freedom City book I discovered there was already a small bookstore in Riverside (The Never Ending Story) are there any way to do a "world tweak" and say "No no, it's not owned by the guy that's in the book that's Calvin's store" ?

Okay looks like the bold is sticking this time. Other two powers have been modified.

Your Saves seem off, you spent 14 points (not 15), your Fort is +5, and your Will save should be +7.

Fixed the math error, Fort should be base 5 like the other two.

Er... I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here.

Basically I'm asking if we can remove The Never Ending Story (Freedom City pg 32) and replace it with the bookstore tht Calvin owns, essentially changing ownership of the store.
