Cyroa Posted October 3, 2009 Author Posted October 3, 2009 James chuckled at Alex, shaking his slightly is feigned resignation. "No, I think you're a VW psychedelic bus kind of girl," he said with a grin. He understood her not signing the papers though and honestly he agreed. He looked over at Erin and nodded. "Just one thing left," he said, heading back outside. He tossed her the keys. "Take it home." He was perfectly aware that neither Alex nor Erin had their license. He could care less about little things like that.
Electra Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 Erin quickly realized what had happened, but there was no way to back out now without making a scene and looking completely ungrateful and ungracious besides. And truthfully... she wanted the truck now, more than she'd wanted anything in a long time. Actually owning something, even something that she hadn't earned, was a kind of security, and owning transportation, no matter how fast she could run, was a sort of freedom. And it was gorgeous, and fun, and she really liked it. She fielded the keys, then looked at James for a long minute, but didn't really have any way to say thank you out loud. She'd have to think of something later. Instead, she rubbed the back of her neck and tried to pass the moment off with a joke, something she was rarely good at under the best of circumstances. "Don't worry, Alex, I'll keep a cushion in the backseat for you to sit on whenever you want to drive it. You ready to hit the road?"
alderwitch Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 "You'd better! Unless you want me to try out my driving by ESP and guess work," Alex said lightly, pretending to put her fingers up to her temples like some sort of crazed fortune teller. Before she punched James shoulder lightly and declared, "Shotgun!" Of course, there were only the two of them heading for James car, "You going to follow us back, Erin, or shall we see you when we see you?" Alex figured that the first drive in her first car was something Erin might like to experience all on her own, and she was more than happy to oblige.
Cyroa Posted October 5, 2009 Author Posted October 5, 2009 James gave a little half smile as realization finally kicked in for Erin. He took out the little gas card they'd talked about before and handed it over. "Here, you'll need this two. That thing's gonna be a monster to fill." He gave her a little nod, and a grin. She didn't have to say anything. He was happy that his friend was happy. His best friend really. And Alex, being the most intuitive person James had ever met, figure out what Erin wanted before it had even come up. He nodded at her with a grin. "Have fun. We'll see ya later." He turned to Alex as he moved back to the car, nodding to the scene of Erin standing in front of the truck. She might look like a teenage girl to everyone else, but they knew she was far more than that. "We need to get her some cool shades and a gun rack to really round that picture out. Maybe a leather jacket? And regular colors too," he added with a grin considering who he was talking too.
Electra Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 "I'll catch up with you guys," Erin answered vaguely, already absorbed in the admiration of her new vehicle. She unlocked it and climbed inside, settling into the front seat and buckling up. Under the sparkle, it even smelled brand-new. She spent a few minutes fiddling with the controls and adjusting the mirrors just so, then started it up and carefully negotiated her way through the parking lot and onto the street. There'd be trouble if she got caught driving on just a learner's permit, but for once she didn't care at all, partially because she was immediately absorbed in navigating through the traffic. That was always the hardest part about driving these days, remembering that the other cars would also be moving. Now she was high up, though, and could see everything. It was great. She didn't yell with delight as she turned out onto the thruway, mostly because it seemed undignified, but it was hard to remember the last time she'd felt as good.
