Barnum Posted January 12, 2008 Author Posted January 12, 2008 Darla screamed again and began trying to scramble away from the tentacles, but the creature already already had her arm and chest entwined. She sensation of the slimy appendages against her skin was mind-numbingly horrifying. "W-w-w-ho are you?" she managed to ask. The light still hovered above her head, and Darla began looking around frantically for some route of escape.

Lilac Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Darla didn't stand a chance. Her arms and legs were completely engulfed in tentacles, and the tentacle that had snaked it's way down to her waist was beginning to squeeze tighter and tighter. Breathing was becoming more difficult. The tentacle with a mouth pressed its foul lips against her ear. "I am the Creeeeeeeeeeping Terror. I am the Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight Stalker. I am Niiiiiiiiiiiiightmaaaaaaaare. And yooooooooooou, my child are a taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasty sssssssssssssssnack." As the creature spoke, Darla felt herself being lifted off the ground. The creature was pulling her toward itself.

Barnum Posted January 13, 2008 Author Posted January 13, 2008 Darla thought she was all through screaming, until the tentacles, still trying to crush chest and arm, lifted her off the ground. She managed a little yelp, but every time she breathed out, the tentacles constricted that much tighter. For now Julakin's protective magic was holding, but Darla wasn't sure for how long. The thought of being helpless, of being groped and suffocated by this creature was terrifying, but somewhere deep down, another emotion was stirring. Darla was angry. "Leave me alone!" she spat. "Zallamowertiugh!" Darla had never tried to cast the spell before. Mokar's magics were unbelievably dangerous, but dangerous was exactly what she wanted. A brilliant red diamond appeared, floating just above her forehead. A beam of light zapped out from it and struck the creature in the middle of its nasty body.

Lilac Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 The mystical ray of mental energy struck the nightmare's bulbous body. For a moment the creature looked like it was stunned, but then all of its mouths began laughing in a cacophonous chorus. "You wiiiiiiiiil havvvvvvvvvve to dooooooooo better than thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, little moooooooooooooorsel!" Several more tentacles entangled Darla's limbs, and carried her to within inches of the nightmare's stinking husk. A large, putrid sack burst open on the top of its body, and a giant mouth extended out of the hole on a huge stalk. It opened its mouth wide and made like it was going to swallow Darla whole.

Barnum Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 Darla was so scared of the gaping mouth, that she nearly fainted, but the crushing pain she felt in her chest kept her very alert. Darla was nearly done for, but she wasn't giving up that easily. Channeling the shakras that "lived" inside of her took great willpower and determination, and there was nothing quite like the thought of being eaten alive to motivate her. Wracking her brain for a solution to her predicament, Darla remembered Julakin's protective aura. The words formed on her lips, but this time she twisted the final syllables. The magical web that had formed around her was designed to keep her from being touched. With just a little creativity the web could be altered to do the same thing but in a different way. All she had to do was speak the words and imagine the right symbols . . . "Akaramalizikarogerin!" Immediately the air rushed back into Darla's lungs. She felt light and free. The tentacles flailed around violently, but they passed through her harmlessly. "Bye," she said trying not to sound terrified. Darla flew at top speed as high and as far as she could to get a way from the creature. All of her thoughts turned toward flying. She began shaking so violently her teeth chattered. Her mind was focused on one thing and one thing only . . . her closet. "Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" THUD Darla fell out of her closet and hit the floor hard. She scrambled to shut the door, and pulled herself to a sitting position with her back to the door. Her eyes were still closed, and she was still shaking violently.

Lilac Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 The nightmare incarnate howled furiously when the little girl slipped from its grasp. The creature was still howling when she disappeared from its sight. Inside her room with the closet door shut, Darla saw no sign of pursuit. She could hear her dad still snoring. Her room, illuminated only by her little night light, looked as normal as ever.

Barnum Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 After several minutes, Darla stood up slowly. She grabbed the little metal chair beside her bed, sending a hoard of little stuffed animals and several articles of clothing to a pile in the floor. She wedged the chair under the doorknob of the closet and then sat down on her bed, watching the closet carefully. "Ouch!" Darla put her hand on her sternum. It hurt every time she took a deep breath. She hoped the tentacle hadn't broken something. Healing magic was tricky and dangerous, and Darla didn't want to have to explain to her dad how she cracked her ribs. "You can't sit here forever. Go to bed and hope the chair holds, or go back in there and try again." Darla curled up on the bed and closed her eyes. She was wracking her brain. How could she defeat such a creature. It was obviously much stronger than she was, impervious to the only attack spell that she knew, and . . . it was just so scary . . . Darla wasn't sure she could bring herself to go back into the closet. While Darla tried to muster the courage to form a plan, her hands began to glow with a white light and a chill came over her. It was Julakin's shakra asserting itself. Darla sat up quickly, grabbed her journal, and began scribbling down the words and images that came flashing into her mind.

Darla sat up quickly, grabbed her journal, and began scribbling down the words and images that came flashing into her mind. Darla's brain was bombarded with images and sounds as a small portion of Julakin's mystical acumen made its way to her conscious mind. Letters and symbols, some complete and some fragmentary, flashed in her brain, as did images of the Nightmare. Darla immediately recognized the symbol for warding off fear. She also saw a fragment of what she recognized as the words of fire. The whole experience was dizzying, and when it was over her head was throbbing.

Barnum Posted January 20, 2008 Author Posted January 20, 2008 Some time later . . . Darla looked at herself in the mirror, admiring her handiwork. It had taken her nearly two hours and a lot of creative bending to get it done, but Darla had managed to cover almost her entire body (almost) with the runes for warding off nightmares. Somewhere in the back of her mind she knew there was a formula for ritual paint and a mixture for creating temporary skin "stains," but there was no time for that. Darla needed something precise and durable, so she used what she had on hand . . . a black Sharpie. After checking herself to make sure every line was correct, Darla pulled her pajamas back on and crept over to the closet door. She rubbed her sternum gingerly. It still hurt, and she had a nasty ring of blue and black bruises running all across her chest from the tentacle. It's now or never. Darla reactivated her protective spell, spoke the proper word for traversing the dimensions, jerked open the closet, and plunged head-first into the line of clothes.
