tryrar Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Power Level: 10 (152/156pp) Trade-Offs: -4 Attack/+4 Damage, -2 Defense/+2 Toughness Unspent PP: 4 Gold Status: 6/30 In Brief: Scientist gets powers in freak accident with new gravity power generator Alternate Identity: Professor Don Fried Identity: (Secret) Birthplace: Panama City, Florida Occupation: Scientist (High Energy Physics) Affiliations: Has regular guest lectures at several universities, and even does work with the military Family: Janis Fried (younger sister), Halley Fried (older sister) Age: September 16, 1978 Apparent Age: 30 Gender: Male Ethnicity: White Height: 5' 11" Weight: 178 lbs. Eyes: Light blue Hair: Brown Description As Dyne: Dyne's gravitational field can warp light at zero distance above his skin, causing him to appear not so much as a person than a three-dimensional living shadow with only his eyes visible As Don Fried: Don Fried is your average-looking research scientist-if your average well respected research scientist looked about 30, that is. He's of average height, is slightly skinny, has short wavy brown hair and sky blue eyes, and slightly pale skin(though there are hints of a tan that comes from running at least a mile every few days) Power Description: Dyne's powers manifest as dark, blurry distortions in the air as intense gravity warps the air, and even light! History: Born on the sunny shores of Florida, Don Fried immediately showed that he was no ordinary child. Already speaking in complete, coherent sentences at age 3, he was tested to have an IQ in the low 200's at age 7, and later his IQ was proven to be exactly 208, well in the genius range. At age 16, he finished high school a full 2 years early, and then went on to receive his PhD in Physics in an almost unheard of 5 years. He was not done yet, though, and almost immediately set the world on fire with his ground-breaking(and controversial) paper unifying all the known theories on space, time, and gravity into a cohesive whole, for which he received a Nobel Prize for 3 years later. During this time, he also lent his talents to the military in advancing and developing new energy weapons. Eventually, he got into the environmentalist movement with his ideas on radically different power generation techniques using his now accepted Unified Gravity Theorem, which allowed for the generation of power using the Earth's gravity field alone. With several companies interested, he eventually chose a small high-tech research firm located just on the outskirts of Freedom city called Hallirion Advanced Technology LLC., on the basis of their location and generous employment benefits and flexible schedule. With money pouring in from excited investors, a test facility was constructed just northeast of Hanover, away from most other buildings. Working for two and a half years straight, he eventually designed a truly revolutionary new power generator. However, with investors eager for results, the company eventually decided to rush the production of the generator to the test stage. Dreaming of almost unlimited profit, on day in September(on Don's 30th birthday, in fact) HAT LLC. threw the switch on the Graviton Dual Spatial Field Power Generator(called the Big Betty by those working on it, due to it's massive size). It was then that rushing the generator to the test stage proved to be a grave mistake... Later, forensic reconstruction showed that a flaw in the building of the power generator, along with overlooked and outright cut safety features, allowed the dual opposing gravitic fields to begin a N-space distortion, which caused a gravitic eddy to form, which then degenerated into a full-on graviton vortex. Only the quick thinking of Professor Don, and the swift evacuation of the facility, prevented any loss of life, and only by Don managing to initiate a N-space reversion along dimensional lines(causing the fields to reverse polarity, expending their force outward instead of inward) prevented the vortex from collapsing into an outright unstable black hole, which would have destroyed all of Freedom City(and likely most of New Jersey, New York, and major parts of New England as well) before dissipating. The resulting energy release, however, did destroy the entire facility, and actually broke windows for miles around. When the smoke and dust cleared, though, Don was nowhere to be found, as he had stayed behind to initiate the reversion and check that the facility was clear before getting out. Frantic search and rescue efforts of the rubble located Don's twisted, bleeding, and broken body amid the wreckage. While hardly in very good shape, he was miraculously alive. After spending a year in the hospital, Don quietly retired from the public life for a while to his modest mansion he owned in North Bay. during the intervening months, he slowly discovered that being in the middle of a N-space reversion, coupled with the powerful gravitic fields present, had somehow converged to give him strange powers to control gravity. Being a good, honest, and generally patriotic guy, he knew what he had to do with his new-found gift; fight crime! And so, he became the newest superhero on the block, the man known as Dyne. Personality & Motivation: Don is generally a very cheery, upbeat person, though not above being a little sarcastic(especially to people who actually manage to annoy him, usually by demonstrating acute stupidity). He's also pretty patriotic, and has offered his services to the military in the past, and would definitely be the first in line to volunteer if the country was ever attacked. Having acquired a vast fortune through wise investing and a handsome salary, he feels the need to help out those less fortunate than him, and is known to fund numerous charities. With his older sister becoming a cop, he also views criminals as scum, and is happy to do his part in increasing the prison population(by catching criminals, of course). Powers & Tactics: Dyne will usually either use his gravity powers to vastly increase someone's mass to the point where they can't move, or nullify gravity so that they fly up into the air and then come crashing back down. On particularly tough enemies, however, he'll hit them with powerful focused blasts of gravitons; or on huge groups, hit them with a wide reaching eruption of graviton waves. Occasionally, he'll use the surroundings by throwing objects using a multi-directional gravitational field. Complications: Academic Pride: Dyne is proud of his achievements in advancing science's understanding of the universe, and can get understandably upset whenever someone belittles his works. It is in fact, one of the very few things that can truly ignite his temper! Grudge: While Dyne is normally a pretty nice, even-tempered guy in general, if someone manages to actually anger him, he can get a little...vindictive against that person. He may have a long fuse, but his anger burns equally long! Oh my goodness, it's him!: As one of the youngest to ever win the Nobel Prize for Physics, Don is easily recognizable by the newsies(at least, the ones that are paying attention). As such, he has to wear at least a simple mask for those occasions when he his caught while his warp field is down. Oh well, I'm sure we didn't need New England anyway: The fact that new England was just minutes away from disappearing down a black hole was, well, omitted from any of the accident reports, and largely buried as a whole. If anyone ever found out that little factoid, Don's reputation would instantly go from "Genius Nobel Prize winner" to "Oh my god, it's the nutcase that nearly killed us all". Needless to say, he tries his best to keep this secret. Responsibility: Don still has an open contract with HAT LLC.(though they've taken a serious hit to their cash flow after the accident, they've not gone bankrupt yet!). He also has several commitments to the military for advancements of high-energy weapons for defending of the nation. Avenger Assembled Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 You're over PL with your Gravity Control. As it's an area effect that provokes a save, it's limited to PL. In general, you'll want to clean up the many deviations from our template here (capitalization, spell-checking, use of abbreviations) before Refs can take a look at this.
tryrar Posted September 12, 2010 Author Posted September 12, 2010 ok, double-checked spelling and grammar, cleaning up the formatting for my powers a little, increased the attack/damage tradeoffs so I don't have to go through the nightmare of completely redoing my array, and added another complication i thought up of(also changed the formatting there a little). Tell me what you think.
Dr Archeville Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 I think you need to reduce your Gravity Control, like Avenger said. It's an area effect that provokes a save, it's limited to PL, so you cannot have it at more than rank 10.
tryrar Posted September 13, 2010 Author Posted September 13, 2010 Brainstorm! by switching the positions of gravity control and telekinesis(thereby making telekinesis the primary power), I don't need to adjust the array(since telekinesis neither provokes a save OR does damage(unless I use it to fling stuff at people, or the reverse!). I HOPE that takes care of the problems, but if you spot any more, I'll be happy to correct.
tryrar Posted September 13, 2010 Author Posted September 13, 2010 also, took Nightmares drawback for extra pp. It does make sense for my char, though. Wouldn't YOU have nightmares after staring down a forming black hole? :P
Avenger Assembled Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Only Usable While Flying really should be a drawback, not a flaw. You're not going to be unable to fly in half your threads, which is how often it would need to be for a flaw. Additionally, you're over caps in your Science knowledge. You're limited to PL+5 ranks, or 15. You need to say what your Attack Focus is in, as well as fix your capitalization.
tryrar Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 ok, done and done, and I think I got all the capitalization errors(feel free to highlight any I missed), and that extra 2pp allowed me to hit max damage(excluding power attack bonuses, of course). All in all, I think Dyne is ready to rock!
Geez3r Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Abilities, good. Combat, Your attack line is off; you do not have any power with the Accurate Power Feat. Your Knockback is -5 with your Force Field. Saves, You've only spent 18 points here, not 20. Your Force Field is not Impervious. Skills, You have 69 ranks currently. Feats, good. Powers, On your Gravity Control Power, Selective would be an Extra, not a power feat. Again, none of your powers have Accurate and your Force Field is not Impervious.
N/A Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Brainstorm! by switching the positions of gravity control and telekinesis(thereby making telekinesis the primary power), I don't need to adjust the array(since telekinesis neither provokes a save OR does damage(unless I use it to fling stuff at people, or the reverse!). I HOPE that takes care of the problems, but if you spot any more, I'll be happy to correct. I'm not threadjacking Geez, just interjecting for a moment for the sake of clarification. Normally, PL caps are hard caps. You can't buy PL-breaking ranks in a trait, just to, for example, act as a buffer against Drains. And a power is bound by offensive PL caps if it provokes a save or forces an opposed roll. Thus, Damage (provokes a save) and Trip (provokes an opposed check) are both PL-capped for "damage." However, the Ref team decided that Move Object and Create Object are the two traits in the entire game that we're going to allow characters to "soft-cap," since, while they have offensive applications, they are not primarily offensive powers. By our house rules, you can purchase as many ranks of either power as you can afford (so you can lift/support as much weight as you want to pay for), but any saves you provoke with them (Toughness from throwing or dropping Moved or +Movable Created Objects at or on foes, trapping foes in Created Objects, etc.) are PL-capped, based on your attack bonus with the power in question. But these are the only powers we allow this sort of "over-buy" for. (It's also worth noting that the Grapple bonus from Move Object isn't PL-capped, since Grapple bonuses aren't capped, and there are several other ways to stack up insane Grapple scores, such as Growth and Super-Strength.) Geez3r, back to you.
tryrar Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 alrighty, fixed the combat line, and I'm not really sure how the heck I came up with 20 points in saves  , but with the extra two points, I bought accurate for my array, which fixes that part of your complaint(and keeps me at caps for attack, btw), and by offsetting distracting to pay for having selective as an extra, I don't have to completely rewrite my gravity control. I also made sure I completely bought up all my skill ranks. That SHOULD clear up everything, though I'd be happy to fix any other issues you spot.
Geez3r Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Abilities, good. Combat, Knockback is -6 not -5, I goofed when I said it was 5 earlier. Saves, good. Skills, good. Feats, good. Powers, You break caps with your Graviton Ray power. It has a +8 to hit and a +14 DC, making that power be PL 11 instead of 10. The Graviton Eruption likewise breaks caps (as I'm assuming its a General Area of effect because you did not denote otherwise). General Area effects are capped at your PL regardless of Trade-offs. This attack would not break caps if it was a Targetted Area effect. In case you are not aware of the difference, let me explain. A General Area effect is the standard "Roll a Reflex save for half damage" from the D&D days. It automatically hits everything in the area, but those within the area have a chance to get out of the way. Targeted Area effects on the other hand require an attack roll from the user in order to hit the targets. One attack is made for all targets, which is compared to the defense of all applicable Targets. If they are hit, they must save at the full Rank. If the attack misses, they do not have to save at all. A Targeted Area effect (unlike a General Area) can benefit from the Trade-off feats such as Power Attack because it requires an attack roll from the user.
tryrar Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 Dangit, My math is all over the place, since I forgot to reduce attack focus due to adding accurate. The plus side is accurate allows me to get two ranks of luck. This should fix the cap problem... Edit: also noted targetted on my area attack(I do have a copy of UP for future reference...)
