Grotesque Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 (After a bit of help I believe everything is good to go for my character.) First attempt at this, so any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. Power Level: 10 (150/152PP) Trade-Offs: -2 Defense / +2 Toughness Unspent PP: 2 Gold Status: 2/30 In Brief: A martial artist trained at a monastery since he was a child to harness the Ssu Ling element of fire. He is believed to be the current incarnation of Suzaku, the Vermillion Bird of the South. Alternate Identities: Peter Blackmore Identity: (Secret) Birthplace: Unknown (He believes the USA) Occupation: Errand boy and chinese food delivery man. Affiliations: Some police officers that he has become friendly with as well as a few people who are able to get information about all kinds of things (better if you don’t ask how). Family: No blood relatives he knows of, but considers all who were at the monastery with him to be his true family. Age: 22 (DoB: March, 1988) Apparent Age: He looks to be 22. Gender: Male Ethnicity: White Caucasian Height: 5 foot 10 inches Weight: 190 lbs. Eyes: Brown Hair: Dark Brown Description: Peter appears as a handsome fairly well built man. He usually dresses mostly normal, comfortable pants, sleeveless t-shirts (usually showing some musical group/band), running shoes, and maybe a hoodie when it gets colder, stuff that’s looser and easy to move around in. He also always has a red bag he carries on his back containing his hero outfit. He keeps his hair fairly short, and he’s clean shaven. As Suzaku he wears a all black suit, with tie, nice dress shoes, a fedora hat, and an old school domino mask, which also double as night camo. He also wears a long cape-like coat that he wears just because he thinks it “looks cool.†It also somehow never gets even a wrinkle, maybe a bit dirty, but not horribly messy. He dresses like that for his “night-time activities†because he is a huge fan of old heroes such as, Midnight I and Le Renard Rouge. Power Descriptions: When he uses his Chi Fire a light blue flame erupts covering either just his limb he’s attacking with, or, if his Chi Aura force field is active, his entire self is covered. The Chi Fire doesn’t noticeably alter the level of light. His movement powers are in the style of Le Parkour enhanced by his physical and spiritual training. History: As far as Peter knows he was found by the monastery gates as an infant. The master of the monastery declared that Peter would be allowed to live and train just as the monks did. His life at the monastery was a difficult one of daily training, and meditation. Separated from the other for being a foreigner he had few friends within those walls. After years of this, he was summoned to the elder’s chamber deep within the temple of the monastery, there he met Huang Long. Huang Long told Peter that he was actually the incarnation of Suzaku, the Vermillion Bird of the South, and the Ssu Ling avatar of fire. From that day onward he was respected and treated in high regard. With the other three Ssu Ling avatars, the Azure Dragon of the East and avatar of wood Seiryuu, the White Tiger of the West and avatar of metal Byakko, and the Black Tortoise of the North avatar of water Genbu, the four trained together to harness their elemental powers. After finishing his training and leaving the monastery, he set out into the world and travelled to Freedom City looking to make his mark on it. Since then he’s only been able to get a job as a messenger boy, and Chinese food delivery guy using his training to do well enough at those jobs to provide a good enough income to live off of, as well as buy himself a few cool gadgets (his Equipment). However he recently decided, after being inspired by his old pulp fiction books, and noir movies, to use is training for something more useful, like crime fighting. (For anybody that knows/cares about the Ssu Ling, yes I know I used the Japanese names instead of the Chinese names. I just find them easier to pronounce.) Personality & Motivation: Peter, AKA Suzaku, is a nice guy in hero persona or out of it. He’s happy to help old ladies across the street, climb up trees to save a little girl’s cat stuck in a tree. In his regular identity, Peter is fairly lazy, more interested in goofing off, then doing his job. He’s come close to getting fired from his job more then once due to his poor work ethic. He also has problems dealing with people on a personal level, not good with talking or listening to them tending to get easily distracted. When meeting the other hero's and people of reknown in Freedom City, he has a tendence to become over-excited and act, well for lack of a better term, like a fan boy. As Suzaku, he tries to act as a determined, methodical, man with a plan. He pretends to be serious to a fault, and acts confident and highly skilled both in fights and when it’s a simple matter of negotiation. As Suzaku he is a hard man to read and he’s even better at reading others, he is not easy to get one over on. However every once and a while Peter’s true personality does show, usually when he is awestruck meeting or seeing someone famous. For his motivations, he believes that he should use his training to help the people that are preyed upon by the strong. That the world needs people to fight for the basic rights of every man, and that every man is entitled to be treated as an equal. That and he always thought that the old radio/pulp magazine heroes were just that dang cool. Powers & Tactics: Suzaku usually tries to fight where opponents are weak, forcing ranged fighters into up close grapples, and physical opponents into a ranged fight avoiding them using his movement powers. Complications: Honor He will not run from a fight, no matter how hopeless the outcome is he will not intentionally run away, and will have to be forced into leaving the fight. Phobia He has a fear of drowning, his allergy to water and the fact that his Chi Fire powers will not work when submerged only strengths that fear. Rivalry Suzaku and the other three incarnations of the Ssu Ling are honour bound to have to fight one another whenever and wherever they are issued a challenge. (The other three and their elements are in the history.) Ecalsneerg Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 He dresses like that for his “night-time activities†because he is a huge fan of old heroes such as, The Shadow, and the Green Hornet. OK, here's a quibble. I'm not sure these superheroes ever existed in print form in Freedom, because, well... they had real superheroes. But similar Golden Age superheroes would include people like Midnight I (i.e. Wesley Dodds), the Bowmen lineage (Green Arrows, the WWI Bowman and Arrow were Golden Age Green Arrow and Speedy), or Le Renard Rouge (Golden Age Black Canary, only French!) Now, his history is rather short, but I'll not moan too much as your Personality & motivation are very well fleshed out, more than I'm accustomed to. Good show. Complications: Rivalry Suzaku and the other three incarnations of the Ssu Ling are honour bound to have to fight one another whenever and wherever they are issued a challenge. (The other three and their elements are in the history.) Potential NPC hook? Abilities: 6 + 8 + 4 + 8 + 6 + 8 = 40pp Str 16 (+3) Dex 18 (+4) Con 14 (+2) Int 18 (+4) Wis 16 (+3) Cha 18 (+4) Adds up. Combat: 20 + 8 = 28pp Initiative: +2 Attack: +10 Grapple: +13 Defence: +8 (+4 Base, +4 Dodge Focus), +2 Flat-Footed Knockback: -0 Initiative should be +4, not +2, as your Dexterity is +4. The rest adds up, but, you could easily save points by dropping the Attack down to, say +6. Then make the Blast power Accurate 2, and possibly the same for the Strike power. Although, since you've got grappling feats, going for straight-up Attack Focus (melee) would let you keep up your grapple modifier, and to-hit roll for the grapple. Also, a word of warning, +13 is quite low for someone focussed on grappling, so as long as you don't want it as a huge focus, just keep wary of that. Saving Throws: 6 + 4 + 3 = 13pp Toughness: +12 (+2 Con, +10 Force Field) Fortitude: +8 (+2 Con, +6) Reflex: +8 (+4 Dex, +4) Will: +6 (+3 Wis, +3) Adds up/ Skills: 100r = 25pp [Acrobatics] [8 Ranks] (+12) [bluff] [6 Ranks] (+10) [Diplomacy] [6 Ranks] (+10) [Disable Device] [10 Ranks] (+14) (+16) (with masterwork tools) [Disguise] [6 Ranks] (+10) [Escape Artist] [12 Ranks] (+16) [Gather Info] [8 Ranks] (+12) [Language] [1 Rank] (Chinese) [Notice] [9 Ranks] (+12) (+8) (when wearing Night vision goggles) [search] [6 Ranks] (+10) (+6) (when wearing night vision goggles) [slight of Hand] [8 Ranks] (+12) [sense Motive] [8 Ranks] (+11) [stealth] [12 Ranks] (+16) (+21) (while in proper camouflage environment) Please look at other people's sheets to see how this should be formatted. Example: Language 1 (Chinese, native: English) Sleight of Hand 8 (+12) Stealth 12 (+16, +21 w/ night camo) Feats: 21PP Blind Fight Chokehold Connected Contacts Dodge Focus 4 Elusive Target Equipment 1 Evasion 2 Fearless Grappling Finesse Improved Grab Improved Grapple Improved Pin Improved Throw Improved Trip Instant Up Power attack Precise Shot Prone Fighting I'm getting 23pp, not 21pp. Night Vision Goggles (Grant user darkvision imposes a -4 penelty on all Notice and Search checks made while wearing them) [1ep] Smoke Pellets (Fills square with thick red smoke, provides total concealment to all visual senses except X-Ray vision) [1ep] Mini-Tracer (A tiny radio transmitter with adhesive backing. With a successful attack roll or Slight of Hand check to plant without target’s knowledge. Noticing tracer is DC 20 notice check or slight of hand check whichever is higher. Tracer has transmission range of 2 miles) [1ep] Camouflage Clothing (Night) (Grants a +5 Stealth check in proper environment) [1ep] Masterwork Tools (Disable Device) (Grants +2 for skill check) [1ep] You don't need to note what all the Equipment does, the Refs know. Also, the smoke pellets need statted out. I'd make them Obscure 1 (visual, 5' area) [2EP]. They're definitely not 1ep, if you're getting that from the sample utility belt, that's because it's an Alternate Power off a Utility Belt Array. Powers: 9 + 9 + 4 + 3 = 25PP Chi Fire Array 5 (Power Feats: Alternate Power 1; Drawbacks: Full Power, Power Loss/submerged in water [uncommon, minor; -1])) [9pp] BE: Blast 10 (Flaws: Action/Full) [10/10] AE: Strike 10 [10/10] Please, please, please glance at other sheets, because you're close to the right format, but not quite. Chi Fire Array 5 (Power Feats: Alternate Power 1; Drawbacks: Full Power, Power Loss/submerged in water [uncommon, minor; -1])) [9pp] Base Power: Blast 10 (Flaws: Action/Full) [10PP]Alternate Power: Strike 10 [10PP] Force Field 10 (Chi Aura; Drawback: Power Loss/submerged in water [uncommon, minor; -1]) [9pp] Super Movement (Slow Fall; Wall climbing); Descriptors (Training) [4pp] Movement Array 1 (training; Power Feats: Alternate Power 1) [3pp] BE: Leaping 2 (x5) [2/2] AE: Speed 2 (25MPH) [1/1] Again, format it as I showed above. And, now a slight concern. While I'm aware Badass Normals can do insane things with the training descriptor, perhaps the Speed should be training and ki, because 25MPH isn't the top speed. It's the speed while moving as a Move Action. Running all-out, you move at 100MPH. That seems slightly much for an entirely training-based power, but seems more like a martial artist ki move. Drawbacks: = 4pp Weakness (Allergy to water when exposed every 5 minutes [+1 on time and Value Progression Chart]; Frequency: [Common]; Intensity: [Moderate] (cumulative -1 penalty to all checks, attack rolls, and Defence) [4pp] I assume this is submersion in water, rather than say, rain? Or an attack from a water elemental soaking you, and such?
N/A Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Again, format it as I showed above. The fastest human footspeed on record is 44.72 km/h (27.79 mph), seen during a 100 meter sprint (average speed between the 60th and the 80th meter) by Usain Bolt. Ecal's right. It's safe to say that Mr. Bolt was moving all-out, which means that 28mph was x4 his normal speed, putting said normal speed at around 7mph. Meaning that taking even 1 rank of the Speed power (10mph) makes you half again as fast as the fastest human who ever lived. More than 1 rank does seem out of bounds for a Badass Normal. And, for the record... Javier Sotomayor (Cuba) is the current men's record holder with a [high] jump of 2.45 metres (8 ft 0.46 in) set in 1993 and is the longest standing record in the history of the men's high jump. On August 30 of [1991], Mike Powell of the United States, in a well-known show down against Carl Lewis, leapt 8.95 m (29.4 ft) at the World Championships in Tokyo, setting the current men's world record. With STR 16 (+3) and Acrobat +12 (assuming an average score of 10-11 on the DC15 check, that's +7-8ft of jump distance), that's a base jump distance of 20ft running long, 10ft standing long, and 5ft high. Still under the world-records, but definitely world-class. 1 rank of Leaping (x2) would shatter those records, but not past the point of believability. Leaping 2 (x5) increases those scores to 100ft running long, 50ft standing long, and 25ft high. That's over three times as far or as long as any human in history. That's too much for something that isn't a "superpower." Now, obviously, we favor the Rule of Cool here over any scientific accuracy, but if a trait isn't supposed to be a "superpower," then there are limits to how far we can strain the sense of disbelief.
Grotesque Posted September 25, 2010 Author Posted September 25, 2010 Alright I rewrote parts of it as per your suggestions. I hope everything is alright now. Description: For your concerns about his description, all I own is the core rulebook for second edition so didn't really have any heroes to name drop for his description, so I just used some I know and like. History and Personality: Yeah, I'm not that great at making up histories, but thanks for your compliment about his personality. Complications: Exactly what I was thinking, going to try making the other three probably as NPC's someday. Combat: Yeah mis-wrote the initiative fixed it. For the Attack suggestions, I'm not that concerned with making him as sound number-wise as possible. As for his grappling, well he's not going to use it all the time, just on thugs if they get to close, or physically weaker targets, and also probably hit them with a trip attack first to make it easier. BTW is a trip attack considered and unarmed attack? Just wondering if it qualifies for Improved Grab. Skills: Alright sorry wasn't quite sure about the formating. Feats: Must of miscounted somewhere, fixed now. Equipment: Was erring on the side of caution with the complete descriptions. Powers: Okay once again not to great with formatting stuff. For the Movement stuff, sorry I wasn't entirely clear on what exactly the effects for Speed were, I was trying to keep it mostly realistic. The Leaping though, well I though of those "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" wire-fu type jumps... thought it'd be kind of uh... interesting. So I'll add the chi description onto it also. Don't have the book that the Array stuff is in so I don't know if the Movement Array is rule legal right now. Drawbacks: I was thinking an allergy to water, Aquagenic Pruritus. A little sprinkle, no problem, his clothes gives him some manner of protection to keep him dry. Heavy down-pour rain on the other hand? He prefers not going out. As for something like fight a water elemental it kicks in after five minutes, so he'll be fine, for a while. He can fight water types, he just reeeeealy doesn't like doing it.

Don't have the book that the Array stuff is in so I don't know if the Movement Array is rule legal right now. We would have told you if it wasn't. Anyway, there's no point in arraying it now. Taking Speed 1 as an AP of Leaping 2, so you can't Leap and run at full speed at the same time, is 3pp. Taking Speed 1 and Leaping 2, so you can move fast and then jump in the same round... is 3pp. I'd just not array them. Drawbacks: I was thinking an allergy to water, Aquagenic Pruritus. A little sprinkle, no problem, his clothes gives him some manner of protection to keep him dry. Then could you specify it was a Weakness to submersion in water, or drenched in water, then, so it's easier for Refs to know what you mean?
Grotesque Posted September 28, 2010 Author Posted September 28, 2010 Alright, I believe I checked and tuned up everything. It should be good and all ready to go.
