His hazel green eyes sometimes flash green when he's focused on a particularly vexing problem. When he's not in his lab coat, you can usually find him in comfortable jeans and a button down shirt. Power Descriptions: All his powers derive from the TESLA (Terrestrial Energy Systematic Linear Amplification) System. The TESLA System is Gauntlets and Belt. The gauntlets look like a pair of shiny metal wrist bands when deactivated and the belt looks like a stylized lightning bolt with a thundercloud gray and sky blue glowing buckle in the middle. History: Doctor Emil Nicholas Romanowski, born Emil Nikolai Romanov, has led what many would consider a very interesting life. His parents, Duke Alexi and Duchess Suzanna, were a lesser known branch of the Romanov line, more forward thinking and open to new ideas than any of their kin. One of the quotes that has stuck with Emil all of his life was attributed to his father. "Science will bring light of knowledge to pierce the darkness of superstition and fear." It was on this principle that both of his parents insured he received the best training in all matters of science and the arts, specifically in the field of electrical engineering, physics and human psychology. Since Russia at that time had no educational infrastructure for electricity (being barely out of the 19th century in a technological sense) Emil spent much of his youth abroad in places like Vienna, Paris, and New York City. He always returned home for the summer, until there was no home to return to. The October Revolution left its mark on him in many ways. For one, his father and mother were killed by the uprising that had claimed the Czar and his family. It was only by the efforts of his Uncle Yuri that he and the remains of his family were able to escape to Europe. Though he admired Lenin for the progress he proposed and reforms he started, he could not bring himself to support what led to his parents' death at the hands of an angry mob. With great purpose and galvanized determination, he threw himself into his work, learning all that he could about physics, chemistry and the new science of electricity and atomics. With a new sense of purpose, he sought vengeance for his family. For five years, he waged a one man war against those that turned on the ruling party as a means to further their own agendas. Finally, when he saw members of the ousted royalty being asked to set up a Trust, he knew that he had to come up with a plan. His plan was flawless, it was perfection. Unfortunately for him, it was also anticipated, due to the war footing the newly established government was because of the Russian Civil War and because the Trust Operation was designed to capture him and any others who entered Russia as counter-revolutionaries.. When the OGPU caught him attempting to assassinate one of Stalin’s top scientists, he was packed off to a gulag where certain dissidents and troublemakers were sent for “re-education.†It was there where he learned the sweet science of boxing. After it was discovered who he was and what he could do, he was shipped off to one of Stalin's secret science cities, where he and other subjects were subjected to a large battery of tests designed to push the mind and the body to its’ limits. Torture doesn't begin to describe the five years of hell he endured, including daily beatings by the man who betrayed his family, Colonel Ivan Volkov aka Coldwinter, who had moved up in the Cerka. (Think Elijah Snow from Planetary) Coldwinter saw Emil as the embodiment of the aristocratic subversion of the proletariat, even though his parents fought for reforms within the ruling family. With cold cruelty that earned him his moniker, he accepted Comrade Stalin's order to "disappear" one of the last scions of the Romanov family. Fortunately for Romanov, his Uncle Yuri had a friend in Freedom City that could help. This friend was Doctor Thomas Prophet, the Man of Marble. After an extensive search and a hair-raising rescue, they found Emil but he had been gravely injured during his captivity. Doc Prophet had to think quickly to come up with a solution that would save his life. Unfortunately, this meant placing him in stasis until they could get him to America. This was in 1932. When the plane landed in Freedom City, an explosion rocked the airport where the plane landed, damaging the control mechanism for the stasis pod, locking it permanently. The remaining members of his family set aside a portion of their wealth in the hopes that this bright star would one day walk the earth again. Time passed, and the trust fund that was set aside for him grew and grew until the day Emil woke from his forty year slumber at The Albright Institute. At first he was overwhelmed by the sights and sounds that greeted him, including the familiar face of John Danger, family friend and head of Danger International. Danger explained what had happened to him during his eternal slumber, and how they used a combination of the vitamin regimen that Danger himself used and detailed instructions from Doc Prophet on what to do should he be freed. One of the first things Emil decides to do is to seek employment at Freedom City University and learn what innovations had occurred while he slept. Under a new identity, he worked as a lab assistant where he met a fellow scientist, a raven haired beauty who would cause an Orthodox Priest to kick a hole in a stained glass window, where she did post-graduate work in computer science and physics. She was many things that he was not; the most important of these are being well versed in the ways of the modern world, and about as subtle as a polar bear. To make a long story short, he wooed her, dated her and ultimately wedded her at the encouragement of his friends in the Science Labs, and the ceremony took place in Liberty Park. Over the years, she became an associate professor at Freedom City University and carried his unborn daughter Anya in her belly, and he became an associate researcher at ASTRO Labs. He just started his shift when the Terminus Invasion happened. He was busy assisting with coordinating the defense of ASTRO Labs when a report came in of a ship crashing into the Kingston neighborhood. Thinking the worst, he raced home in his Shelby 427 custom, dodging craters, burning cars and the occasional Omegadrone. When he got home his worst fears were correct. The Drone-ship had crashed into the intersection of Sidney and Osgood, the shock-wave of the explosion hitting his house on the border between North Bay and Kingston. He was listening to the radio when he heard of The Centurion's sacrifice to stop Omega. With galvanized will, he called his friends at ASTRO, Danger International and a few auxiliaries from the Freedom League to assist in the rescue...because he had to know if they were alive. While the rest of the city was picking up the pieces, he was trying to save his family. For a few days and nights, they cleared the area of debris, securing what technology wasn't destroyed or rendered useless and set to work clearing the house he had built. They cleared all the way to the secret door in the basement that led to his inner sanctum. The sanctum was a disaster. He could hear his wife crying for help. Working furiously to clear the rubble safely, they reached the pocket that had formed under the rubble of the house. Due to the nature of the design, and for reasons attributed to sheer good fortune, his wife was shaken, bruised and bleeding from minor cuts and scrapes and his unborn daughter unharmed. With tears of laughter and relief, the family was rushed to the Albright Institute, since all of the major hospitals were filled to bursting with casualties metahuman and otherwise. Emil worked tirelessly, assisting the doctors on staff with everything. Suddenly, Kyra's water broke. Even though he had pulled a 48 hour shift with little to no sleep, Emil insisted that he be there despite others telling him he should rest. Finally, the attending physician told him he would keep him up to date while he rested. Doc closed his eyes, and when he awoke, he was the proud papa of a healthy baby girl. Doc considers that the most important event in his life, the meeting of his beloved wife the second. What he doesn't know is that his old enemy has setup shop in Freedom City, using Red Death as his representative there. Coldwinter has not moved against his old enemy yet because he has been more concerned with Raven and the disruption of his business by her. How long that will last remains to be seen. Personality & Motivation: Doc Energy is the typical mad scientist, but with a difference being that because he was a member of a royal family, he was expected to socialize as much as possible. As a result, he doesn't have as many of the social hangups as his slightly twisted fellows have. What he does, he does For Science, whether it's figuring out a new power line design or battling crooks who try to steal from ASTRO Labs. He was raised with a Noblesse Oblige thanks to his royal birth, but his attitude is not one of a prince or duke since he has put that part of his life behind him. Powers & Tactics: Doc is more of a scrapper than his appearance would otherwise suggest. He learned Boxing from guys like "Gentleman" Jim Corbett and John L. Sullivan, but since his awakening, he's studied fighters like Mohammed Ali, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, "Sugar" Ray Leonard and Manny Paquiao. Against opponents of equal power or strength he will usually go for the quick finish, but against larger opponents, he will try to wear them down, use his smaller size and quick mind to his advantage until he can go for the knockout blow. If the opponent is a metahuman, he will activate the force shield first. Usually, he has one or two inventions as surprises for more powerful enemies. Otherwise, he uses his brains...and his two fists. Complications: Sorry, Honey, The Lab needed me to work late...: Doc is one of ASTRO Labs' best scientists. He's usually always there early, and sometimes stays late if there aren't any familial obligations to attend to. Lately, though, it's been harder since he started fighting crime... Noblesse Oblige: He considers it his duty to tend to those that are less fortunate than himself. When he's not working at ASTRO Labs, he can usually be found at the local free clinic, tending to the sick or working with Danger International on some science project they've got going on. If he sees a guy on the street, he'll give them a sawbuck, then point them to the nearest shelter where they can get three hots and a cot. This has gotten him a reputation among the city's poor and homeless. This also means he HAS to do something if someone needs help or is in trouble. Family is Everything: The only thing more important than his work or his noble duty is his family. He will drop just about everything if there's an emergency, or a ballet recital, or even a night out with his wife. Secret He is really the last of the Romanov family, with all of the problems and headaches therein. For Science! Here we have an interesting situation. While he considers the use of science in criminal acts to be abhorrent, he is fascinated by the "tech." If there's an army of killer robots knocking buildings flat, he'll fight them...so he can take the scraps to his workshop for study. This has caused some concern among his peers, but not enough to warrant legal intervention. Enemies Ivan Volkov aka Coldwinter,Red Death-Coldwinter doesn't really consider Doc part of the equation, as his attentions have been on Raven and her activities among Freedom's underworld. However, his representative Red Death, recently returned after disappearing in the late 70s, knows about Doc but will not do anything unless ordered to do so. Needless to say, should lightning strike twice, they will take steps to deal with him.... It has two and a half bathrooms, four bedrooms, a large living room, garage, kitchen space and a dining area. It's a two-story number, the upstairs has the master bathroom, master bedroom and bedroom where Anya sleeps. The downstairs area has the two bedrooms (one is kept as a guest room, the other has been converted into a library/computer room), the half-bathroom (where the litter box is kept), plus the living room/kitchen/dining room area. The front yard is a modest one, the backyard is a fenced in area, where the dog gets let out periodically. Doc's Inner Sanctum is accessed through a secret door in the garage which leads to an elevator that takes him deep into the bedrock under the house. When the house was destroyed during the Terminus Invasion, all of his notes on the COIL system were lost, so he vowed to have a better secured sanctum in the future. This is also why the house has a state-of-the-art security system. The laboratory, workshop, and server room are located there, with an independent power source in case of loss of the power grid. It can also double as a panic room, which Kyra and Anya have access to in case of emergencies. He usually has them with him at all times, because you never know when you might need to spot weld something or have to get the drop on someone in the dark. Dr Archeville
Looking over this now, comrade. First things to pop out after a quick skim: Why an odd number for his Constitution and Wisdom? Feats: you don't need to list his fighting style, just list the feats from it. And list them all in alphabetical order, please. Why an odd number for his Enhanced Strength? Also, that would need to be listed in his Abilities section. Something along the lines of Str 19/12 (+4/+1) Suggestion: Drop Enhanced Strength to 6, add a power feat of choice to the Strike. Since his Force Field only protects against Physical damage, you'll need to list two Toughness saves, one for Physical and one for Energy (or when he's not using the field). Same for his Knockback. Something like Knockback: -9 (v. Physical), -0 (vs. Energy, or without Force Field) Toughness: +10 (v. Physical; Imp 9), +1 (vs. Energy, or without Force Field) Suggestion: Drop Impervious and the Limited Flaw. You can add on Impervious later. Link to comment
SaintDharma32
Okay, I fixed what needed fixing and fine tuned things a little bit. I will also be submitting his daughter as well, that is as soon as Doc is approved. Link to comment
Dr Archeville
I'd planned to get back to this last night, but my power went out for several hours due to storms He spent time in Vienna and Paris, yet doesn't know German or French? Nice to see his wife and daughter are alive, and not fridged Abilities: 3+ 2+ 3+ 20+ 14+ 2= 44pp Str 13/19(+1/+4) Dex 12(+1) Con 12(+1) Int 30(+10) Wis 24(+7) Cha 12(+1) Totals are off, you've only spent 43pp in Abilities. That odd point in Strength isn't really doing anything for you; you could easily afford to knock it down to 12 with no real change. Combat: 18+ 20= 0pp Initiative: +10 Attack: +9 Grapple: +10 Defense: +10 (+5 Base, +5 Dodge Focus), +5 Flat-Footed Knockback: -5 Attack 9 = 18pp. Defense 5 = 10pp. So he's spent 28pp on Combat. But, checking his Feats, it looks like you no longer have Dodge Focus, so Defense 10 would be 20pp, for a total of 38pp. His Defense should be written as +10, +5 flat-footed You should list his Knockback for when his Force Field isn't up (which would be -0 ). Something like Knockback: -5, -0 without force field Saving Throws: 0 + 0 + 0 = 0pp Toughness: +10 (+1 Con, +9 Force Field) Fortitude: +2 (+1 Con, +1 Player) Reflex: +1 (+1 Dex, +0) Will: +7 (+7 Wis, +0) You spent a point on his Fort save, you should list that in his totals at the top. Be aware that having a low Fort save is going to bite him in the butt. Skills: 106r = 27pp Bluff 7 (+8) Computers 8 (+10) Concentration 8 (+15) Craft (electronic) 8 (+18) Craft (mechanical) 8 (+18) Diplomacy 2 (+3) Disable Device 4 (+14) Drive 8 (+9) Gather Information 8 (+9) Investigate 4 (+14) Knowledge (life sciences) 8 (+10) Knowledge (physical sciences) 8 (+18) Knowledge (tactics) 4 (+14) Knowledge (technology) 8 (+18) Language 1(English, Russian) Medicine 4 (+11) Profession (Doctor) 8 (+15) Sense Motive 2 (+9) I'm counting 108r in skills, which would be 27pp. Why such a high Concentration or Gather Information? Please note that the answer to having a high Concentration is not "so his Sustained Force Field won't go down when he's stunned." Profession is an almost completely useless skill here -- it doesn't add to Wealth (as suggested in the Core book), and most Doctor-y things he'd do are covered by his other skills. A suggestion: drop the Profession, add 4 ranks each to Craft (electronic) and Knowledge (technology), to get more out of his Inventor feat. Feats: 22PP All Out Attack Benefit 2: Wealth Challenge - Fast Work 1: Craft Electronic Connected Defensive Attack Elusive Target Improved Block 1 Improvised Tools Inventor Power Attack Quick Change 1 Skill Mastery 1-(Craft: Electronic, Craft: Mechanical, Knowledge: Physical Sciences, Disable Device) Speed of Thought Takedown Attack 1 Ultimate Effort 2 (Ultimate Skill: Craft: Mechanical, Craft: Electronic) Equipment 5 Please list the Equipment feat in alphabetical order with the others. Also, please list the size of his house. A brief description of where it is & what it looks like would be nice, too. You have 3ep unspent. Perhaps you could use those for items to aid in his fight against crime, such as goggles that provide the function of both flash goggles and nightvision goggles (2ep). Or more features for his HQ, like Communications or a Fire Prevention System or an Infirmary. Powers: 19PP Device 3 (COIL Gauntlets; Electricity,Technology;Flaws: Easy to lose) [9pp] Device 3 (COIL Belt and Boots;Electricity, Technology) [12pp] 9+12 = 21pp, not 19. Please list the number of points provided by each Device (15 each, in this case). Also, why are Gauntlets easy to lose? Easy to Lose = can be taken away with a Disarm maneuver. Looks good In M&M, mph is converted to feet per move action in a very simple way: just multiply by 10. So 500 mph becomes 5,000 feet per move action. Other than that, looks fine DC Block: ATTACK RANGE SAVE EFFECT Strike Touch DC25 Toughness (Staged) Damage Unarmed Touch DC15 Toughness (Staged) Damage DC for his Unarmed is 16, due to having a +1 Str modifier. Abilities (43) + Combat (38) + Saving Throws (1) + Skills (27) + Feats (20) + Powers (21) - Drawbacks (0) = 150pp 22pp in Feats, not 20; otherwise all are correct. So he's 2pp over You could drop 1pp from Str, all 8r in Profession (Doctor), and add 2r each to Craft (electronic) and Knowledge (Technology). Link to comment
SaintDharma32
I followed your advice and took out Profession and added ranks to Craft: Electronic and Knowledge: Technology as it's in line with what I had in mind. I also took out Flight, as it didn't make sense, and I can always add it in later, or do something to the Shelby 427 I also took strength down to 12, as all it did was just add more carrying capacity, and that coupled with the points I took out allowed me to bump up my Con and add Enhanced Fortitude to the COIL Belt. I think I got all the point totals right. I also made the Brass Goggles per your suggestion, and added the Multi-Tool to the list. Link to comment
Dr Archeville
Please replace Enhanced Trait in his Belt with Enhanced Fort Save (since that actually describes the trait that's enhanced). Since you bumped up his Con, you need to lower his Force Field, to not break caps. Right now his Toughness is +11 -- +2 from Con, +9 from Force Field. Also, is COIL supposed to be an acronym for something? Link to comment
SaintDharma32
Okay, replaced Enhanced Trait with Enhanced Fort Save, made the adjustment to the Force Field (which I thought I did but apparently did not. Whoops), and renamed the COIL System (since I forgot what the acronym was during the creation) to something more appropriate for the concept. Link to comment
