Not in contact with extended family. Age: 87 (DoB: May Fifth, 1923) Apparent Age: Early Forties Gender: Male Ethnicity: African American Height: 6' 3" Weight: 240 Eyes: Brown Hair: Black some graying at the temples Description: [floatr][/floatr]Sam is in excellent shape thanks to the serum that granted him his powers and between the enhanced vitality granted by the treatments and meditative techniques he used to slow his metabolism during his incarceration he hardly looks half his true age. This is not to say the years haven't touched him the once smooth planes of his face now lightly creased, and a distinguished touch of gray in his hair at the temples. His eyes are his only real tell, Sam isn't a good liar and his eyes tell the tale he has seen more years than his face would suggest. As The Partisan he wears an updated version of his old Tomorrow Soldier costume. Some would call the formfitting flag motif outdated and they may be right but it has never been about fashion to him regardless. I today more accepting times he has removed the full face-mask in favor of a half mask. His right arm is covered with the dull steel gray of the armored C.A.E.S.T.U.S. unit, it shows the wear of the years in service through minor dents and occasional scorch marks though the advanced alloys used in its construction show no signs of weakness or deterioration. History: Sam was born last of six children his father working night shifts in a steel plant his mother taking in laundry and seamstress work in their struggle to make ends meet. Things only got harder as the hard times of the thirties hit many of his siblings started working as well and the family managed to stay fed and together which was quite an achievement for the time. Through it all his family held their faith and held to their belief that they would take full advantage of the opportunities his grandparents had never had. Sam was a clever child and knew things were bad despite his parents efforts to hide it from him even at a young age. As he grew he was more precocious. Across the ocean war was stirring he heard about it as he added what he could to the family coffers shining shoes or selling papers. As things heated at home and abroad he wanted to do his part. He was still a few months shy of 18 when he enlisted lying about his age. He was a mere week into basic when volunteers were requested for a special project. Eager to do whatever he could Sam was the first, and only, member of his unit to sign up. He along with a variety of others from around the country were taken to the top secret location of Project Patriot. The process was difficult and sometimes painful though the researchers took every precaution they could. Some members developed powers that would fail in training, some not at all. Once Jack Simmons success spread through the ranks some faked developing powers. the further testing of these individuals showed just how dangerous the process could be. Sam didn't feel the need for powers if they couldn't use him here he could serve as an infantryman after all. When he first noticed his powers begin to develop he didn't raise any fuss just continued his participation waiting on the doctors to notice his rising potentials. When he was discovered they were put in a difficult situation. He was at that time only the second success and he was a person of color. They pulled him out of the program and into accelerated training. Most of his cohorts assumed he'd failed some crucial test and been returned to regular service. The Training was swift and rough, they did not take the precautions they had with other contenders but Sams abilities held out and he learned. Soon he was deployed, for political and morale reasons he was deployed as a costumed hero his face and identity a mystery. Under the code name Tomorrow Soldier he saw action across the western theater though primarily in North Africa and later Italy. He also participated in a few key battles on the eastern front parachuting into enemy territory for what would be a suicide mission for any normal soldier. He did all of this without pause, his country and indeed the world was facing evil and he would stand in its way no matter the cost. It was during this service that he was equipped with the experimental C.A.E.S.T.U.S. It was hoped that the device woudl prove itself worthy for use by common soldier but difficulties with production of any version that didn't hinder the soldier proved too much and the design scrapped. The prototype however form fitted to his arm allowed him to bring his great strength to bear on even armored targets and with his enhanced abilities in combat he was unhindered by its weight and quickly perfected its use for a variety of tasks. After the war he like the Patriot was approached to inform on other heroes. He refused. When the Red Scare was reaching its height he stood against the excesses of the fearful congressional commission on unamerican activities. He was prepared to reveal his identity and appear before congress, in full dress regalia of his extensive service, those in power knew public opinion would be swayed by such a move and felt the country could not afford to go soft on the red threat. From that fear a conspiracy was born. A select collective of top military brass as well as congressional movers and shakers had his record redacted and his service and very existence made all but no more. He was held in contempt of congress and suspicion of treason. The quiet conspiracy was quick and efficient, most heroes including the patriot himself believed the government released him from his service or perhaps his powers had failed and he returned to civilian life. In fact he was held under a false name in an assortment of federal prisons. Sometimes in general population more often under special guard as a super powered threat. Despite all of this he believed that he would be exonerated no conspiracy could survive the light of justice. In a way he was right. After almost sixty years, much of it spent in a meditative state slowing his metabolism and aging, his case and effects listed as 'the unknown soldier' was uncovered by a minor functionary in the justice department. Full details were not available but his identity was confirmed from his enlistment paperwork, no one knew how he was alive and in such good health at his age and he wasn't answering but they saw to his release. He had no interest in some kind of punitive crusade. Those truly responsible were long dead. He settled in freedom a good place to lose yourself in the masses of modern humanity and took employment with a youth center on the southside quickly rising to an assistant manager. The center was strict on drug and gang activity and when he caught a teen dealing he ejected him. The teen and five of his friends came for him when he was locking up one night. To say they were in over their heads was an understatement the years hadn't slowed Sams reflexes nor sapped his strength. He quickly dispatched the group and drug them into the centers conference room. He secured them to the chairs and gave them a choice. He could call the police and face jail time for their assault, and it would be known on the streets that they were undone by one old man. Or they could clean up their act, be his eyes and ears and maybe make a real difference in their neighborhood. The police arrived not long after to pick up the five who had refused and Sams choice was clear. He assumed the name Partisan and began his drive to defend his country once more from threats within and without. Personality & Motivation: Sam is a firm believer in the ideals of justice, freedom, and liberty that he feels are at the core of the national identity of the United states. He feels it his duty to protect those ideals and his nation, in that order. He is a man of uncompromising conviction not in what the country is but what it represents and what it could be. This is not to say that he's political, he has lived long enough and seen enough in the U.S. and abroad to know that a government isn't what makes a nation but rather its people. It is those people he has taken as his new charge to protect. In his civilian guise he does this through his work with underprivileged youth in the fens doing what he can to offer each child a chance not to escape their community but to better it. Education, intellectual and moral are what he sees as the cornerstones of good citizenship and he fosters both at the youth center he helps run. As Partisan he takes a more direct route putting a stop to those who have chosen instead to take the easy way out and prey upon their fellow citizens. Whether corner dealer or extra-dimensional invader he will do all in his power to see to it that no one need suffer loss to the forces of evil or tyranny. Powers & Tactics: The Partisan derives his powers from the same basic serum used to empower The Patriot. He's at peak human conditioning in strength, stamina, and general health and has extensive training in combat conditions as well as use of the C.A.E.S.T.U.S. With the armored arm and glove he can deflect even the most telling blows and return them with equal fervor. Partisan is a tactical fighter well aware that even with his enhanced physical abilities he is no direct match for the truly superhuman. He'll open defensively waiting for a good opportunity to counter. First priority always of course the safety of civilians. He'll used the steely grip of the C.A.E.S.T.U.S. to disarm armed foes to more quickly neutralize the threat they present. Complications: A long way to go Civil rights have moved leaps and bounds since Sams youth but his skin color still can be an issue for many. Code of Honor Sam has deep seated values not only on the role of a hero but on the role of every citizen. Modern heroes and modern morality may not be in keeping with his expectations leading him to conflict. Back In My Day Sam is still familiarizing himself with the modern world. Technology still is a shock to him and he still holds to many old fashioned ideals on proper polite behavior that are at the least antiquated and sometimes offensive. Responsibility He feel a responsibility not only to continue his work at the youth center but also to protect it from possible backlash from his activities. Avenger Assembled Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 My biggest thought is: Did he have an Immunity to aging that recently wore off?
angrydurf Posted November 19, 2010 Author Posted November 19, 2010 Kinda. The serum slowed some of the effects of aging though not enough for real immunity and he used trance to slow his metabolism and aging for much of his time in prison. Its mushy comic psuedo science for the same basic effect. This is also to explain why he isn't really up on recent happenings. He knows the big stuff (terminus invasions, end of the cold war, etc) but recent fads and what not not so much and no real knowledge of newer heroes out the gate.
Avenger Assembled Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 OK, the math appears to hold up, and I like the backstory. Approved
N/A Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 The crunch checks out, and I love the fluff so much I want to marry it. Enthusiastically :approved:
