trollthumper Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Power Level: PL12 each In Brief: Some of the most famous prisoners of Tartarus, offered "conditional parole" if they'll aid Hades in his plans to establish his dominion on Earth. Power Descriptions: Tityos - Mystical, Magic, Divine (Titan), Earth Ixion - Mystical, Magic, Device, Fire, Air Alethia - Mystical, Magic, Water, Healing Sisyphus - Mystical, Magic, Mental, Charisma Tantalus - Mystical, Magic, Void History: Hades attempted to take humanity by force once. That failed gloriously. Following his retreat from the earthly plain, the lord of Tartarus cursed his lot and immediately went to work on a second set of battle plans. The Pact made a direct invasion impossible, and while he had cultists to operate through, he knew they would likely be under watch by mystical authorities. He needed agents he could operate through, agents with a history of subversion who could escape even the watch of the gods. He found them among the less fortunate of his subjects. Souls brought low by hubris, sentenced to the darkest depths of Tartarus for crimes against gods and men alike. He came to them each with a promise: if he was pleased with their performance, he would find a way to free them from their bonds. For their various reasons -- hope, loyalty, or a chance to get back at the gods of Olympus -- they agreed, and now serve as Hades' secret weapon, taking the guises of mortals and infiltrating the weft of society in order to find a weak place in the fabric of reality and strike. Tityos "Another one broken? Your handiwork is weak, Father!" Trade-Offs: -2 ATT/+2 DMG PP: 156 Alternate Identities: As needed. Identity: Secret. Birthplace: The depths of Gaia. Affiliations: Hades, Tartarus Family: Elara (mother), Gaia (surrogate mother), Zeus (father) Age: Millennia Apparent Age: Late 20s Gender: Male Ethnicity: Greek/Titan Height: 6'6" - 64 ft. Weight: 240 lbs. - 128K lbs. Eyes: Brown Hair: Black Description: Tityos looms. Tityos always looms. Even when he's at his smallest possible size, he gives off the impression that he's larger than he appears. He's a hulking, menacing figure, with tied-back black hair and a full beard. He usually dresses in roles that reflect his boisterous and destructive nature -- member of a biker gang, well-attired legbreaker, private military contractor, and so forth. When he grows, his clothing and features melt away, revealing a titan rough-hewn from the earth itself, clad in only a loincloth. History: Tityos was born too big for the world. The son of Zeus and his mortal lover Elara, he grew up in the depths of the earth, where Zeus had hidden Elara to escape the notice of a wrathful Hera. There, Elara died of complications brought about by Tityos's massive size; not yet fully developed, the fetal giant was taken in by Gaia herself, nurtured in his depths until he could be born. Once he emerged into the world, he grew up isolated; the time of giants had long passed, and he could not control his size. When Zeus found his lost son, he offered him the ability to walk among mortal men, an opportunity Tityos quickly seized. He delighted in the revels of mankind... but while drunk one night, Hera came to him, offering him a prize like no other -- the goddess Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis. Tityos, acting on Hera's behalf, attacked Leto and attempted to have his way with her, but was struck down by the children of the goddess. For his crime against such a valued member of Olympus, Tityos was sentenced to Tartarus, where he was chained to the ground and beset by eagles, who would devour his liver each day, only for it to grow back in the night. Hades came to Tityos with the promise of liberation and the chance to walk among mortal men again... and to tear down the creations of the gods. Tityos gladly accepted, taking the position as bruiser and siege engine amongst the Avernus Legion. Once the earth has been sundered, he figures, Hades will lead a siege on Olympus. He cannot wait to get his hands on Hera and Leto once more... Personality and Motivation: Tityos is a hurricane in human form. At times, he seems the least motivated member of the Avernus Legion -- when he's topside and not directly being ordered about by Hades, he seems more willing to drink, fight and screw than to actually fight on behalf of Tartarus. Once the booze has run out and his appetites have been sated, however, the anger starts to take hold. Tityos has a long list of targets among the gods of Olympus -- Zeus, Hera, Leto, Artemis, Apollo -- and will gladly destroy anything that reminds him of them. Birthplace: Thessaly Affiliations: Hades, Tartarus Family: Ares (father), Dia (wife, long deceased), Deioneus (father-in-law, dead at his hands), Nephele (lover), Centauros (son) Age: Millennia Apparent Age: Late 20s Gender: Male Ethnicity: Greek/Titan Height: 5'9" Weight: 160 lbs. Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown Description: Ixion is gaunt, withdrawn, and mean. His face stirs with a thousand resentments, and his eyes burn with the fire he so loves. He wears his clothes baggy to conceal the bonds he can never truly remove, usually dressing in roles that rely on his expertise -- demolitions expert, terrorist without a cause, engineer. When his bonds are fully unfurled, they take the form of a burning disk of gold that drapes behind him, keeping him aloft through bronze chains that grow to encase his entire body. History: Ixion was the man who always should've known better, but let his own desires drown out all restraint. When he took the daughter of Deioneus without paying a bride-price, he bore his father-in-law's resentment with honor and invited him to a dinner to make amends -- then burned him to death. When the neighboring princes turned on him for this violation of familial sanctity, he accepted the shelter of a pitying Zeus -- and immediately began lusting after Zeus's wife Hera. After being caught in the act with Nephele, a facsimile of Hera made from clouds, Ixion refused to apologize. Zeus ordered him cast out from the heavens, and commanded Hermes to bind him to a soaring wheel of solar fire that would keep spinning unto eternity. The disk eventually fell from the heavens and into the depths of Tartarus, where he came under the watch of Hades. As Ixion spent the millennia in his prison, he slowly began to trace its workings -- the links of every chain, the particular motion of the wheel, the source of the inexhaustible fire. Hades baited him with the promise of freedom... but won him with the knowledge of how to pause the burning wheel. Once it had stopped, Ixion was quickly able to figure out its workings, and how to turn it into an engine of destruction. He has yet to free himself from his prison, but he delights in using the chains of the gods to rain blight down upon their creation. Personality and Motivation: Ixion is a technical genius, and a practical idiot. His mastery of the wheel has granted him something of an understanding with machines of all kinds, and he knows his way around most technological defenses. But the same sort of hubris that landed him in his situation still burns like a bonfire. He believes he should be the commander of the Avernus Legion over Sisyphus, and keeps trying to find the opportunity to take him out of the picture without sabotaging the mission. His goals are simple -- burn everything with the mark of the gods, earn his freedom from his eternal chains, and set up his own little kingdom in whatever's left of creation. Power Descriptions: Blast 12 w/ Autofire - Lances of solar flame erupt from Ixion's palms, striking as if they were tossed from the heights of the heavens. Blast 12 w/ Area Burst - A ball of concentrated sunlight is fired from Ixion's hands; when it touches ground, the base earth rejects it so violently that it explodes. Blast 12 + Trip 12 - A burning chain unfurls from Ixion's armor, lashing out at its target and attempting to knock them to the ground. Dazzle 12 - The solar disk behind Ixion's back gleams with the light of the first dawn, blinding all those who look upon it. Snare 12 - Links of Ixion's chains shoot out and bind a target, restraining them with the same ferocity as was intended for their original captive.Attributes: 2 + 6 + 2 + 10 + 0 + 2 = 22 PP STR 12 (+1) DEX 16 (+3) CON 12 (+1) INT 20 (+5) WIS 10 (+0) CHA 12 (+1) Combat: 12 + 12 = 24 PP Initiative: +7 Attack: +6 (+12 Ranged) Grapple: +7 Defense: +6 (+10 Dodge Focus), +3 Flat-Footed Knockback: -13 Saving Throws: 5 + 6 + 8 = 19 PP Toughness: +14/+1 (+1 CON, +13 Protection, Impervious 10) Fortitude: +6 (+1 CON, +5) Reflex: +9 (+3 DEX, +6) Will: +8 (+0 WIS, +8) Skills: 84r = 21 PP Bluff 4 (+5) Computers 10 (+15) Craft (chemical) 7 (+12) Craft (mechanical) 8 (+13) Disable Device 10 (+15) Drive 6 (+9) Intimidate 4 (+5) Knowledge (arcane lore) 4 (+9) Knowledge (physical sciences) 8 (+13) Knowledge (technology) 8 (+13) Language (Greek [Native], English) Notice 4 (+4) Pilot 6 (+9) Sense Motive 4 (+4) Feats: 20 PP All-Out Attack Attack Focus (Ranged) 6 Dodge Focus 6 Evasion Fast Overrun Improved Initiative Inventor Move-By Action Power Attack Uncanny Dodge (visual) Powers: 65 + 1 = 66 PP Device 16 (80 PP Container, Hard to Lose, Feats: Indestructible) (Helios's Wrath) [65 PP] Immunity (aging) 1 [1 PP] Helios's Wrath Blast 12 (10 120ft Range Increments / 1200 ft. Birthplace: Egypt Affiliations: Hades, Tartarus Family: Danaus (father), Pieria (mother), the Danaides (sisters), Aegyptus (uncle) Age: Millennia Apparent Age: Early 20s Gender: Female Ethnicity: Egyptian Height: 5'7" Weight: 110 lbs. Eyes: Green Hair: Black Description: Alethia looks like Egyptian nobility - olive skin, flowing black hair, and steely yet haunted eyes. She usually dresses in simple, understated fashions, and when in disguise, fulfills the role of a healer or helper -- an aid worker for a nonexistent charity, the new nurse on shift, a marine biologist in a sensitive environment, and so forth. History: Alethia's father only wanted the best for her. That's what she tells herself, at least. Danaus was the brother of Aegyptus, one of the first kings of Egypt, and was commanded by his brother the king to wed his fifty daughters, the Danaides, to Aegyptus's fifty sons. Danaus took his children and fled to another city, but when Aegyptus threatened to make war on its people, Danaus relented to his wishes. He ordered his daughters not to give in to his demands, and to murder the sons of Aegyptus on their wedding nights. With tears in her eyes, Alethia stabbed her husband of a few hours to death. And all would have gone smoothly, had her sister, Hypernmestra, not fallen for her husband. Danaus, outraged at her betrayal, took her to the local courts - and when his murderous plot was exposed, her husband Lynceus slew him. Judgment was passed on the other Danaides, who were forced into their own marriages. Alethia drowned herself rather than go through with her assigned marriage, hoping to find solace with her father in death. She instead found herself in Tartarus, stained to the bone with the sins of herself and her sisters. As they slowly filtered down to Hades' domain, they were sentenced to prepare a ritual bath that would absolve them of their sins -- in a tub that was constantly leaking, preventing them from ever filling it and washing away their crimes. Alethia tried to find ways to master the flow of the water and grant her sisters their absolution, but nothing would stop up the tub. Then Hades came to her, and offered her a chance to grant the Danaides the absolution they so wished -- if only Alethia would use her mastery of water on his behalf... Personality and Motivations: Next to Sisyphus, Alethia is probably the best at keeping the Avernus Legion together and focused on their goals. She may even be better than Sisyphus at soothing conflicts between the team members, convincing everyone of the importance of their freedom. Unlike the others, who view themselves as victims of cruel fate or jealous gods, Alethia does see herself and the others as sinners, and tries her hardest to keep them on the path towards redemption. Power Descriptions: Move Object - Alethia calls the very waters to her aid as any nearby bodies surge from their confines to greet her. Blast w/ Knockback - Alethia gathers the moisture in the air together into a high-pressure blast that sends her foes flying. Blast w/ Fort Save - Moisture condenses in the target's lungs, causing them to drown. Trip - Alethia sends water lashing out around her in the form of almost solid whips.Attributes: 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 6 = 28 PP STR 12 (+1) DEX 16 (+3) CON 12 (+1) INT 14 (+2) WIS 18 (+4) CHA 16 (+3) Combat: 10 + 12 = 22 PP Initiative: +7 Attack: +5 (+8 Ranged, +12 Water Control) Grapple: +6 Defense: +12 (+6 Base, +6 Dodge Focus), +3 Flat-Footed Knockback: -10 Saving Throws: 6 + 7 + 5 = 18 PP Toughness: +12/+1 (Force Field 11, Impervious 8) Fortitude: +7 (+1 CON, +6) Reflex: +10 (+3 DEX, +7) Will: +9 (+4 WIS, +5) Skills: 64r = 16 PP Bluff 8 (+11) Concentration 8 (+12) Diplomacy 10 (+13) Knowledge (current events) 4 (+6) Knowledge (theology and philosophy) 8 (+10) Language (Greek [Native], English) Notice 7 (+11) Sense Motive 10 (+14) Swim 8 (+8) Feats: 18 PP Accurate Attack Attack Focus (Ranged) 3 Distract Dodge Focus 6 Environmental Adaptation (Aquatic) Improved Initiative Improved Trip Instant Up Power Attack Taunt Uncanny Dodge (visual) Powers: 20 + 30 + 25 + 4 = 79 PP Force Field 11 (Extras: Impervious 8, Feats: Selective) [20 PP] Water Control 12 (25 PP Array; Feats: Accurate 2, Alternate Power 3) [30 PP] Base Power: Move Object 24 (Lifting Strength 120 [Heavy Load: 200K Tons], Flaws: Limited to Water; PF: Indirect) [25 PP] AP: Blast 10 (10 100ft Range Increments / Max Range 1000ft, Extras: Knockback 4, Feats: Indirect) [25 PP] AP: Blast 8 (10 80ft Range Increments / Max Range 800ft, Extras: Alt. Eyes: Green Hair: Black Description: Sisyphus blends; that's what he does. He's either the most charming man in the room or the least noticeable one; he's either talking you into giving him your wallet or picking it out of your pocket unnoticed. Between jobs, he dresses in the finest fashions imaginable. While on a mission for Hades, however, he either blends with the rest of the Legion or stands out as their leader -- lawyer for a union that doesn't exist, head of a band of mercenaries, commander for the SWAT team that just conveniently showed up. History: Some bastards are just too cunning for death. Sisyphus was one of them -- for a little while, at least. A crafty, avaricious man of few scruples, Sisyphus's downfall began when he told the river god Asopus the location of his missing daughter, a secret guarded by Zeus himself. When Zeus found out, he ordered Thanatos, Hades' personal reaper, to bind Sisyphus and ferry him to the Underworld... but when Sisyphus asked for a demonstration of how the chains worked, Thanatos obliged, and ended up bound within his own fetters. Ares freed him when he tired of no men dying and turned Sisyphus over to him, but before being ferried to Tartarus, he told Merope to throw his body naked into the public square. When he arrived down in Tartarus, he complained to Persephone that this was a sign of his wife's disrespect to him; Persephone allowed him to walk out of Tartarus to scold Merope into giving him a proper funeral, and he quickly hid among humanity. It took the intervention of Hermes to drag him back again, and when he arrived, he was put to work pushing a boulder up a hill for all eternity. Such rote work gave Sisyphus plenty of time to plot, and now that Hades has temporarily lifted his burden, he has a hundred plans to put into action. Plans for wealth, plans for power, and ultimately, plans for revenge. It''s funny that those plans lack one thing, however -- Hades. Personality and Motivations: Sisyphus is the self-appointed leader of the Legion; he's managed to keep the position through promises, bribes, and cutting the legs out from under others at the right time (such as Ixion). He formulates a hundred different back-up plans, always having something prepared for collateral when he goes into a job. He thinks only of himself, and everyone knows he thinks only of himself, including Hades. What Hades doesn't know, however, is that Sisyphus has puzzled out that Hades has little right to revoke a punishment handed down and enforced by most of the other gods of Olympus. He may never be free from Tartarus... but that doesn't mean he couldn't take over. Power Descriptions: The Shifting Spear - A tool forged by Hephaestus himself and confiscated by Hades during one of his last visits to Olympus, this spear is the perfect weapon, taking whatever form the warrior on the field needs. It works mainly as a spear (Damage + Trip), but also takes the forms of a shotgun (Damage Area Cone), assault rifle (Blast w/ Autofire), and sniper rifle (Blast w/ Improved Range). Eyes: Brown Hair: Black Description: Tantalus looks like a starved man -- which is, to be fair, exactly what it is. Millennia of unnatural hunger have left him gaunt and lean, like a skeleton in skin stretched too tight. He tries to make up for his emaciation with rich hair, a full beard, and padded suits and other fine clothes. On assignment, he usually takes on the role of a man of wealth, taste, and necessary proclivities -- a high-class hitman for hire, a wealthy potential investor, a high-stakes stock trader, and so forth. History: As King of Sipylus, Tantalus wore honor and pride as twin raiments. His fair yet firm style of rule won attention from the gods themselves, and Zeus invited the mortal king to dine at the tables of Olympus. What Zeus didn't know, however, was that Tantalus nursed a secret desire for something outside of mortal finery - a life of wealth and privilege had dulled his senses to mundane pleasures. He found his answer in his first taste of ambrosia, which flooded his palate and drove him into a fit of ecstasy. He pilfered the food of the gods, but as the high wore down, he soon realized the depth of his mistake. He saw fit to repay the gods for their act of kindness, but knew that no conventional food would feed them. His mind opened and twisted by the effects of the marvelous brew, he found his answer in his own son, Pelops. He butchered the child and prepared him in a stew, offering it to his Olympian visitors. They quickly deduced the nature of his offering, however, and after restoring Pelops to life, struck down Tantalus and sentenced him to the depths of Tartarus. As he was led across the River Styx, Tantalus kept wondering if he'd prepared the meal in a way that didn't fit his guests' tastes. In the depths of Hades's kingdom, Tantalus was harrowed by his punishment. He was beset with a ravenous hunger and placed in a pool of water, with a bough of aromatic fruit hanging over his head. Every time he stooped to drink, however, the pool would recede, and every time he reached to feed, the branch would rise out of his grasp. The pangs of the hideous, unceasing hunger almost drove Tantalus mad. When Hades came to him offering him a way out of it, he didn't even pause to hear the details. After finally eating for the first time in millennia, Tantalus has taken to life again with a sense of joie de vivre. But the hunger that he believes controlled is playing on him, seeking him to find new ways to feast... Personality and Motivation: Tantalus cares about one thing - consumption. The one-two punch of the heady brew of ambrosia and the eternity of hunger as punishment has turned the freed Tantalus into a glutton. When he's not on a job, Tantalus spends every hour of every day indulging in food, drink, drugs, pleasures of the flesh, and... darker appetites. The rapacious hunger that defined him has abated to a sort of jaded, epicurean attitude that drives him to seek out the new and untested... but if he's pushed to the limit, he will gladly do anything to feed the gnawing void inside. Power Descriptions: Matter-Eater - Tantalus's maw opens disturbingly wide, fully swallowing whatever he can cram in. As he enjoys his strange repast, wounds begin to close on his body, the matter going to feed his wracked body. Corrosion - Tantalus's hunger seems to extend just beyond his mouth, as matter is stripped away from something just outside of his reach, flowing into his open maw.
