"I..." Fred looks down at liver-spotted hands, and remembers it all. The joy of flying, the thrill of victory over terrible enemies. He'd loved every moment of it. But the world has changed so much since the days of Captain Wonder; so many friends have died, so much has changed about right and wrong and good and evil in the world of the 21st century. Fifty-five years... Fred remembers his wives; his kids and grandkids, the joys and sorrows of being a husband and father three times over. He remembers his dead friends too; Mark and Alexander and all the rest, dead and gone with their virtue intact. And he remembers his own parents, who lived and died without ever knowing their son had been the greatest hero of the city of Memphis.

What finally settles it isn't the mighty god before him, or even the memory of the people in Riverside park. He remembers Mark Leeds, his best friend, the last night he saw him alive. It was 1986; and Mark, a new widower, had come to his old friend's house after being driven out of Freedom City by the Moore Act. Fred, himself recently divorced for the third time, had asked Mark why he still wore the uniform. The Centurion couldn't even visit his own wife's grave in Freedom City, and was likely to be booed by the mayor's goons if he showed up on the wrong day. Why keep fighting?

It doesn't matter if the people reject you, or even if they've lost their way entirely. What matters is that you know what's right, and that you teach them to value truth and justice again.

The memories pass through Fred's head in a moment. He has only one answer for Atum-Ra, and that answer is a single word.

"SHIM-RA!"

Fred's frail, elderly form was gone in a flash of light and a crash of thunder, replaced by the power-packed figure he was used to. The glory and exultation of being once more imbued with the power of Shim-Ra was his. Bursting at the seams with potential, fairly brimming with it, Captain Wonder breathed free again. But there was something missing. Something Captain Wonder had remembered feeling before.

"Your power is restored, as I promised," Atum-Ra said, a thin smile creasing his face. "But not all. Just as with all that lives, you must prove worthy of that which I have given you. The full measure of your strength will return in time, but know that you are no longer the world's most powerful mortal. But this is enough for now. You are still among the world's strongest, do not fear, but you must prove your bravery and valor. Anyone can stand against the horrors to come when they are assured of invincibility. I ask you to do so regardless."

Atum-Ra stood again and pointed behind Captain Wonder. "Now go, Captain. Go and fight for justice once more!"

And then Captain Wonder was back at Riverside. No time had passed between when Atum-Ra had summoned him and now. People were still desperate to get away from the SHADOW troops running about, and perhaps even worse, the two "heroes" blasting away into the crowd to hunt them down.

In a moment, Captain Wonder is in the air. Clad in the gold and white of the Ogdoad, the very colors of the sun and moon, he is an unmistakeable figure in the sky. "Hey! You kids!" His first priority is the fools in the air; he's not going to hurt anyone fighting Nazis, but he still has to put a stop to their shenanigans.

When he has their attention, Captain Wonder takes a deep, deep breath, and exhales with the power of Shu himself. There is a mighty wind, safely above the heads of the crowd, as the sheer power of Captain Wonder's lungs batters the two young punks.

Trusting that he's got their attention, Captain Wonder moves. With a blur of speed, he falls on the crowd below, striking again and again as he finds each and every minion of SHADOW. If he was careful not to hurt the kids in the air, he shows no such mercy to the neo-Nazi terrorists below, and his speed lets him strike again and again with his fists without hurting the fleeing people below.

"That's the way you do it!" he exults, looking remarkably pleased with himself as he lands his fist right on a Nazi's jaw! There are other Nazis around, but hey, everyone knows Nazis are cowards. The ones who get away aren't shooting at anyone, at least.

Maybe it was the fact that someone who bore a startling resemblance to Elvis was flying at them, but the two kids from Next Gen were unprepared to deal with the newly reminted superhero, however diminished his strength. Winds the equal of a Force 2 hurricane slammed into both of them before they could act. Though Megastar would have normally been in a better position to resist the massive gust, he failed to get out the way in time, and was bowled out of the air, slamming into the ground below.

Sonic, on the other hand, fared slightly better. Initially, he was able to dodge the winds, but the air current that did catch him were still able to swat him from the sky. Tumbling head over heels after his bigger companion, Captain Wonder heard the boy spout off a stream of expletives that would make a sailor blush. Just another thing to council him against, he supposed.

But the real target being the neo-Nazis, Captain Wonder laid into them with a vengeance. Black-suited hatemongers flew through the air like ten pins as his fists met with their faces. When he was done, the immediate area was clear of SHADOW troops, but it seemed there were always more to strike down. How people could willingly go along with a brutally insane ideology, Captain Wonder would never know. But neither did he care.

Megastar and Sonic got to their feet quickly, glaring at the man that had smacked them out of the air. "What the hell's your problem?!" Megastar shouted, blasting towards the old time hero. "We're trying to help and you attack us?!"

"Man, don't even waste time with that fo!" Sonic yelled at his companion. He stayed on the ground and started blasting away at the SHADOW troops again. Fortunately, the respite gained from knocking them out of the air had allowed most of the people of the park to get out of the line of fire. More Nazis went down under his blast, but there were still enough to fire back.

Laser fire from the SHADOW lines reached out and tried to harm Captain Wonder, but his skin was too tough; the amplified light glanced off like rain against a window. The same appeared to be true of Megastar, but the kid was too pissed to care about the incoming fire. He was too fixated on Captain Wonder. "I am going to mess you up, man!" he shouted, cocking back a fist to strike him with.

"Why, you..." Though he is sorely tempted, unlike some people, Captain Wonder doesn't swear in the middle of battle. (Not where people can hear, anyway.) Despite the urge to lay into this punk, Wonder remembers that he's supposed to be the grownup here. With the Nazi beams bouncing off his body, Wonder leaves himself wide-open as he throws up his arm to intercept the punch. "Fight the Nazis, you idiot!"

"So was I, until you butted in, @$$hole!" Megastar roared as his punch slipped through Captain Wonder's defense and knocked him back a step. Not only did the formerly frail man receive a shock to the system from the punch itself, but the fact that Megastar seemed to be just as strong as him was a wake up call. In the past, he could have gone punch for punch with Centurion, but now...

Sonic, in the meantime, was grinding his teeth together in frustration. His teammate had gone completely off mission and was now beating up an Elvis wannabe in a knockoff Captain Thunder costume. "And I'm supposta be the trouble maker?" he growled, firing off another sonic wave at the approaching SHADOW troops. The neo-Nazis seemed to have clued into the fact that two of their primary threats were tied up at the moment fighting each other, and took the opportunity to make a break for it, laying down cover fire at the beleaguered Next-Gen-er, who had to duck behind a tree to keep from getting perforated.

"Dammit Star, get cho ass back here!" he shouted, but was drowned out by weapons fire and disintegrating foliage. "I am so going to wreck yo 360 for this, bro!"

Captain Wonder doesn't put a whole lot of effort into dodging a punch he would have taken easily in the old days. That makes it all the more infuriating when the punch not only strikes home, but hits hard enough to send Wonder's ears ringing! The man who once took full-on punches from a mind-controlled Centurion is rocked back on his feet. The blow itself, and the discomfort behind it, are enough to truly cheese the old man off.

"They're getting away!," he shouts in frustration, before throwing his own punch at the jumped-up hooligan. Despite his anger, he keeps holding back. Fred Fawcett has been in a war and killed men; he's not going to go all-out in a superbattle until he's sure of just how powerful he is these days. Not unless he is sorely pressed.

A little belatedly, Wonder realizes that he's letting himself get distracted from his larger purpose. Even as he throws the punch, he rockets up into the air, hopefully faster than the kid can fly, in the direction of the fleeing Nazis. Perhaps the sight of a better target will shake some sense into 'Star', though Wonder is a hair's breadth away from doing some shaking of his own.

It had been another day, and another patrol, though his excursions through Riverside by and large were just part of excuses for him to enjoy the simple pleasure of flight as his argent form sailed in gleaming patterns through the air, even in the ocassional loop, light refracted and traced in abstracted pattern. Normally speaking after all, this part of the city was fairly quiet.

And then, in a single moment, it wasn't.

The edge of his hearing caught the sounds of violence first, and he accelerated fiercely enough for a screech of wind shear to herald him.

It was fortunate that his mind moved quickly in fights, and so instead a quiet boggling at what seemed to be... if it was possible.. the Captain Wonder his father had spoken of in his stories of old adventures, fighting Megastar of all people, was just one thought amidst several.

The lion's share of his attention went to the SHADOW agents attempting to flee the scene and what looked to be devastation they had caused (and seeming at that to be trying to kill the teenaged Sonic). He lowered the arc of his flight, his fists outstretched to slam into the first of them, beginning then spin his entire body around, moving in a spiral along his now weaving flight path, silver fists, feet and even his entire body twirling along points of impact to smack into the villains.

"Ahm... if everyone who is here trying to help could please limit their offensive efforts to the people here to harm, I think the city would be deeply appreciative! As a suggestion! Especially to Megastar, who's dialogue seems extremely unfortunate besides!"

Somehow, he actually sounded well intentioned and helpful in tone as he called out.

While the free-for-all between Megastar and Captain Wonder was playing itself out closer to the walkway around the park side, The Emissary made his presence felt in grand form by the treeline. He cut through the ranks of furiously retreating Nazis like a scythe through wheat, badly scattering their already tenuous formation. Men flew through the air, bouncing off trees and each other, before finally slumping to the ground and laying still. The Emissary's blows were calculated to be just powerful enough to knock out the men without permanently harming them, however.

"'Bout damn time I got some backup," Sonic said as the weight of fire shifted away from his position. He rushed out from his hiding place and laid into the side of the shaken SHADOW troopers with his specially modulated blasts. A couple more were disabled by it, and their losses were finally starting to tell. There couldn't be more than perhaps fifteen left.

But those that were left struck back with some sort of shoulder fired weapon, a massive laser burst flashing out, but missing the Emissary as he laid into their ranks. The man desperately tried to swivel his targeting sight over the quickly moving construct, but it seemed unlikely that he'd be able to get off another shot before getting hammered.

Captain Wonder's blow landed cleanly, smashing Megastar backwards and rendering the metahuman temporarily insensate. Fortunate, seeing as how Megastar didn't seem to be acting sensibly anyway. Captain Wonder's spirits were buoyed by the appearance of another superhero, though. His chrome exterior belied an apparent verbose lexicon - always nice to see in such tough times.
