Hmmm... given the fact that Jay doesn't like the sound of his own voice, he uses the telephone as little as possible, and he'd likewise try to avoid webcams. I take it that Lefevrier insisted on Jay using a webcam (had it written into his contract, perhaps)?

One clock-hour to solve the problem: My initial reaction was one of disbelief -- and then I recalled what you can do with Quickness and the Take 20 rules.

So.

To figure out what the problem is with Lefevrier's website, Take 20 on Knowledge (Technology), yielding a 'roll' of 29.

To identify the culprit what did it, another Take 20 on Knowledge (Technology) for a 'roll' of 29 (to identify any incriminating aspects of the attack), plus Take 20 on Knowledge (Business) for a 'roll' of 28 (to identify any of Lefevrier's business rivals who might have been damaged or embarrassed or whatever by any of Lefevrier's ruthless dealings, hence have motive to retaliate against L.) Take 20 on Knowledge (Current Events) for a 'roll' of 28 (to identify any currently-active villains or terrorist groups or etc who might reasonably be expected to consider Lefevrier a valid target for whatever reason). Collate all the information gained from these Knowledge checks into a report. If Jay can uniquely identify a specific culprit, that's great; even if he can't, he can at least provide informed estimates of what avenues of investigation are more or less likely to yield good results.

That's a total of four Take 20 'rolls', which add up to a total of 4 hours of time; at a tempo of 40, Jay can burn thru those four hours of investigation in about six minutes' worth of clock-time. Since L. gave Jay a one-hour deadline, that means Jay has roughly 54 clock-minutes to spend on stuff like catching up on his catnaps (see also: Jay's weird sleep schedule), and prepping the presentation to L's board, and so on.

Indeed! Quickness!

Knowledge (Technology) here, you can determine that the whole IT system of Lefevrier is secure externally, it looks like attack was internal. Computers skill needed for the actual counter hacking / traces I think.

Knowledge (Business) plenty of enemies! the most recent and hurtful is Moebius Limited, a small IT company that specialise in financial computations for the business world. They had a bust up with Lefevrier a few months back. Moebius happen to employ some "out of the box" employess ie hackers.

Knowledge (Current Events) nothing really.

Computers skill, you say? Not a problem for Jube's Jack of All Trades feat! With his INT of 18, Take 20 on that yields a 'roll' of 24.

Enough to track down the culprit without gaining definitive proof (ie good circumstantial evidence), Jason Vines, an employee of Mobius. To anticipate further activity with your knowledge rolls, he has a degree in computer sciences and a conviction for computer hacking two years ago.

ALso regarding your legal knowledge a knowledge (civics roll) DC 10. Or alternatively, instead of said knowledge roll you can bluff your way that you know it DC 15!

Hmmm... Jube has neither Intimidate nor Knowledge (civics) skill. Okay, that's what his Jack of All Trades feat is for. The Take 20 rules don't strike me as applicable here, so I'll do some real die-rolls...

Intimidate is a CHA-based skill, so Jube needs to roll 1d20+1, and his Intimidate roll (1d20+1=14) may or may not do the job. I am unsure whether Jube's inhuman appearance would modify this roll?

Knowledge (civics) is INT-based, so Jube's roll here is 1d20+4. And the dice say Knowledge (civics) (1d20+4+2=18)!

Note for Supercape: Jube's presentation will include all the results of his investigations, including his short list of candidates for Who Done It (Mobius Ltd. and Jason Vines). I stopped the post at the start of Jube's presentation so that the GM would have a chance to show the board-members' various reactions to Jube, who is, after all, a friggin' cheetah with a decidedly inhuman voice...

Just in case it wasn't clear in the post: Jube's final recommendation is not "don't do stuff which pisses off other people", but, rather, "make sure you judge how badly you're gonna piss people off".

Okay... Jube has agreed to play detective for that Jerkwad, Lefevrier. Jube's not going to start work on this particular task immediately, and therefore has some time to kill... which means we now have an opportunity to throw other stuff at the cheetah! Yay!

The contract for detective work: Jube is bringing his lawyer into it because he doesn't trust Lefevrier as far as he can throw him at a tempo of 1. Story-wise, the effect is that "Lefevrier II: The Second Contract" will occur a bit later, like maybe after one or two non-Lefevrier incidents.

"people who know WTF they're doing when it comes to sound processing": Now that he's finally starting to accept his inhuman body for what it is, Jube wants to see if it's possible to build an adequate inorganic substitute for his lost voice. In chat a few weeks ago, Darksider42 expressed interest in having Rift show up in this story; if DS42 is still interested, this would be a good time for Rift's guest-star appearance. I'll send DS an private message, and if it happens, it happens.

Superheroing: The usual hero-on-patrol thing. This is a golden opportunity for you to make use of any villain you like, Supercape; whether it's a badguy you think deserves more exposure, or you have the Perfect Villain in mind for a speedster, or what, it's Dealer's, I mean GM's, Choice! And of course this is also a chance for Jube to see how normal humans interact with quadrupedal him when said humans don't have any sort of relevant financial interest...

Gorilla Man seems like he should be a suitable opponent for the fastest cat alive. If that guy wants to splice Jube's DNA into his own genome, you (the GM) should be aware of something which was established in I KAN HAZ HUMANITY? -- namely, that the Grue savants who modified Jube's DNA built some nasty boobytraps into it, so that attempts to undo the genetic changes are very likely to end up being fatal. This suggests that any attempt to splice parts of Jube's DNA into another creature's genome... may have unpleasant consequences for the DNA-recipient.

In other words, our boy Vimes may just learn that you should be careful what you wish for, because you might get it...

Anyway... Robbery. At the Hanover Institute. Can Jube pour a couple points of his Gadgets into a FCPD datalink? The theory being, this will be the quickest way for him to acquire whatever info the police have gathered thus far. If Jube can't pull that off, he'll instead ask the "lean, anxious cop" for details. And of course Jube will accompany the cop car for as long as it takes that man to pass info to Jube.

Once Jube has the requested information… or at least, as much of the requested info as his source(s) can provide him… he'll zip on ahead to the Institute. Once there, he'll circle the place for preliminary reconnaissance.

What Jube intends to do when he arrives: First, kill the truck. Slash all its tires, including any spares that are readily available; unscrew all the nuts holding wheels onto axles, and put those wheel-nuts in a convenient vest pocket; and steal the distributor cap off the engine. Also check the inside of the truck to see if there's any unpleasant surprises in it. If there are, and said surprises are of the 'obvious weapon' variety, Jube will disable them.

Once Jube is done with the truck, which should only take a small number of clock-seconds 'coz he's upshifted, he'll whip around the building again to see what's changed since his first 'tour'. Only a few clock-seconds, sure, but that's long enough for someone to teleport in or out…

If Jube's 2nd "scouting run" does not reveal any surprises, he'll zip inside and write on a transparent wall, mirror-reversed so it can be seen & read by all the perps and other people inside: YOUR TRUCK IS DEAD. WANT TO SURRENDER?

Jube is surprised that the henchmen don't care about their truck, but okay, it looks like they have a 'Plan B' in place. Jube's next move is to look for entrances and/or exits to the sealed-off region. He'll zip around the building for a physical search, and he'll also (try to) use his Gadget points for a datalink to HIT's internal network, on the theory that HIT's Administration should have up-to-date floorplans of all the buildings on the campus, this one included.

The 'physical search' involves Jube stopping at several points and downshifting to the point that his Infravision comes into play. Since he spends so much time upshifted, the Ultravision is pretty much always available. As for the Gadget/datalink thing, hopefully Jube can just "push the button", and he performs the physical search whilst the machines do whatever they do. Running in parallel, as it were, to save a bit of time.

Theres not much more to find on either search. However you can easily access the computer to the biological research room, and with a bit of work, unlock the doors. The readings for the comuter are there is no biohazard active, although plenty of samples and equipment in the room where the robbers are is indeed highly dangerous.

Obvious next step: Unlock a door, zip inside, re-lock it and do an exhaustive search of the sealed-off area to find all the perps, be they henchmen or villains or what, and any other civilians who might be trapped in this situation.

Hmmm... Would it be possible for Jube to change the passwords on the computer-controlled locks? If so, he'd do that before zipping in.

I am a bit confused, I thought Jubatus had computer skill but on his recent sheet I can't find any trace. If that's the case I will say unlocking is ok but nothing further.

Jube has Jack of All Trades, so he's got a virtual Computer skill. Which is oddly appropriate, now that i think of it… Anywho, unlocking, good; no messing with the password, got it.

Once Jube is inside, he'll (try to?) rescue the hostage and ask said person what they know about what the perps are doing.
